why do everyone say that the linux chick is a hottie? she's pretty and all but c'mon she's not THAT good lookin'...well i could understand if all the guys saying that are some nerdy virgins or sommin' but whatever..i'll drop off over here
yes mac is overpriced at 150, when windows is triple that good point. linux is made by users copying features from other os. and windows copied mac and mac and windows copied xerox.
@LSSRoshi It's true the actual OS X operating system is cheaper than Windows as a standalone. But very few people actually buy the standalone discs. They buy the Mac hardware. A MacBook Pro at $1500 has the exact same hardware as a Dell XPS M1530 at $800. The idea of a GUI originated from Xerox. But that's not really copying. Xerox didn't have a Start Menu or Taskbar. Xerox didn't have a Dock or Multi-Desktop feature. Xerox didn't have Windows Aero and Flip 3D. The list goes on.
@Generalkidd well first they both have their own MOBO, but as far as cpu and gpu they both get that from the same place. Ram I know Apple gets it from either corsair or crucial, who are both excellent memory makers. Let's just say dell doesn't, they go by the lowest bidder. Fans, heatsink, and ventiallation is similar. Their hard drives are from different manufacturers, and sound card as well. I'm not trying to justify their price points, but they do use better quality parts overall.
@LSSRoshi Well, I'm not trying to start a flame war here, but for higher end laptops from Dell, such as the Dell XPS or even the Alienware Laptops/Desktops, the parts inside are also high quality. Now the RAM in my specific model M1530 which is a 2008 model is pretty average. Nothing special. Everything else is pretty good though. The overheating issues associated with some Dell laptops are because of the nVidia GPU. It wasn't Dell's fault. Continued in one more post...
@LSSRoshi Most computers today use integrated sound cards or have the CPU's process the sound. Since Apple switched to Intel motherboards, the Mac hardware is pretty much PC hardware. So most integrated features on a Macbook would probably be the same parts as a Dell XPS. I think 3rd party hard drives like Western Digital or Seagate are far better than anything Apple can produce. Keep in mind that Dell doesn't make a lot of hardware. Most parts are 3rd party as is with most PC's and Macs now
@ schmidtbag Fedora is great for home use, fedora is just as good as Ubuntu, the idea of Ubuntu was to have the end-user in mind, Fedora is usually aimed for more experianced users, while still easier than slackware, Unfortunately Ubuntu has not really implemented the English UK, fedora has it available.
i'm not a fan of RPM based distros in general. fedora is good for what its intended for and nothing else - business. it is TERRIBLE for home use because it makes customization more difficult than necessary. i've been searching a long time for the right distro - for a while i've been a gnome fan but now that i prefer kde, that should immensely widen whats available for me. almost every distro has its issues
@gmanprime500 actually hopefully the world will move on from Microsoft's direct X and games will be able to run natively on Linux with OpenGL without the need of Wine, there are already a few games going that way, like OpenMW a popular open source remake of the popular Elder Scrolls game; Morrowing, and rumour has it steam is coming to Linux too! :)
@sinisterstuf That would be nice, and if you wouldn't mind ill make a little correction to your comment... its Morrowind. Cant wait to see steam in my linux box though.
@gmanprime500@sinisterstuf haha yeah Morrwind, my bad, disadvantage of speed typing is sometimes rubbish comes out and you don't even notice it! Linux users have noticed things that are already in steam code and functionality etc. that is used by no other OS than Linux, not even mac, so it seems to be under active development, I can't wait for those native steam games! :)
@sinisterstuf DirectX 11 is much better than OpenGL at the moment though. So it's basically a race to see whether Microsoft can stay ahead of the open source community. Anyways, every feature in Linux originated from either Windows or OS X. The multi-desktop thing was from Mac. And newer versions of Linux such as Kubuntu and OpenSuse now have Start Menu's and Taskbars like Windows.
@Generalkidd not true. Let me remind you that UNIX used the windows metaphor i.e. a graphical box on your screen called a window (not windows the OS) before MS Windows or Mac OS X even existed. I do believe X, the window manager used in Linux is older than either MS Windows or Mac OS X.
@Generalkidd maybe, but I never mentioned rights. I only pointed out it is the core feature of Windows / Mac OS and they weren't the first to do it, the point being that not everything in Linux is based on those 2, for which this served as a very good example.
@Generalkidd It's also not really right to say that features like menus and task-bar's (called window lists in GNOME) originated from any single OS, these things developed by themselves, in the same way as you can't accuse humans of copying having eyes from another animal which has eyes. We evolved to have eyes and they evolved to have eyes. It's just an example, I'm sure you get my point. DirectX has a head start. As for which is better between the two is debatable.
@sinisterstuf Well, the Start Menu as we know it really did originate from Windows. That's why Windows 95 was such a big deal and considered a revolutionary operating system.
@Generalkidd This may be true and while KDE brought something similar to Linux users in 1996 I think I should point out that not all Linux interfaces have something that even remotely resemble a Start Menu, some don't need a menu at all. As an example, take a look at the *Unity* interface that the popular Linux distribution, Ubuntu, will be using as of April this year {can't post a link in a comment} not the same as a Start Menu. Also have a look at Sugar's UI, not like a Start Menu at all.
I have 2 desktops, both multiboot, the first with Xubuntu and XP, the second one with Ubuntu and Win 7.
Then i have a server, which runs a unknown Debian distribution made by an friend.
The Debian distro runs at an 800MHz webserver with a total RAM of 128/64Mb (I'm not sure) That computer used to run Win 95. I tried to install Win XP but apparently microsoft put up a handbrake preventing you from installing Win XP SP3 on processors running lower than 1GHz...
But I would argue that its more a problem of people being so used to a particular operating system that using something different is completely off-putting and frustrating.
Its more like people are used to driving stickshift, and now have to get used to automatic.
that's probably right. It's just all the linux fanboy hating confuses me. It's like people continuing to live with an illness instead of taking the medicine to cure it, because they are either superstitious or afraid of change.
Maybe it's also that thrown into the mix with the "why fix a good thing" mentality, which, wouldn't be so bad if the thing people were fixing were actually not broken. "yeah, I don't need a new car. This one works fine" -- until they go up a hill.
its funny because novell, the company that hosted this commercial, tried making openSUSE the #1 linux desktop and ubuntu still beats them. i support novell's efforts but they just don't seem to pick the best way to do something, such as their IPX idea
on the other hand average users like to see pretty desktops, everything in gui and operations done by clicking a few buttons and all.. in that field, linux is a little behind windows and osx but is rapidly gaining pace.. kde4 is a good example for the target market of pretty desktop lovers..

If linux is EASY and painless in 64bit, it must be totally awesome for 32 bit users too.
I was talking about starting from zero, not ubuntu since that's a bundle packet, Linux + most common things. ( okay that is good for normal user i admit )

As for software you're 'used' to just run it in a virtual machine - i run cs4 in one and its full speed. as for "drivers for software" - you only have drivers for hardware, and this is NOT a problem on linux its all automatic.

The best thing is, that both MacOS X and the NT line of windows (including Vista) are based on BSD clones in big parts. BSD is very close to Linux. So everything is somewhat based on Linux.. which is based on Unix. :D
Ah, excellent. Another élite among this... rabble - a diamond in the rough! We Linux bakers are few and far between, friend. I, too, have learned the art of baking monkeys.
To simplify things for new users, I am considering implementing the command bkmnk, with switches -s -c and -b, to represent soft, crispy, and burned, respectively. Please do add suggestions if you have any.
y do ppl show always show windows as a 40 year old business guy and mac as a 22 year old college guy? well, i have no arguments about Linux here, i mean Linux is hot like the grl in the ad.
The funny thing about this is, that it isn't true :)
I haven't got a grudge against mac users, nor windows users. What i do have a grudge against is Mac users who just can't shut up about using a Mac. They got the problem.
Oh, and Mac OSX is even based on the linux kernel so try not to piss on your own shoes ;)
Exactly! lol It's obnoxious how some Mac users will claim that Macs are perfect. There's little performance difference between Macs and PC (windows) anymore. Linux is the shit, and I'm soon going to make the switch. :)
Growing up is not the remedy to understanding that the Macintosh is simply the easiest thing to install and use for most people and if you don't see that, you need to either try it or stay in your code-closet.
when was the last time u had to install a mac. try it and i bet that u'll end up running linux. and linux does not require coding knowledge unless u really wish to. and as fas as mac is considered. come-on what is there except a good looking difficult to understand interface?
Huh! What are you smoking? I started with nothing and now I can help people installing Linux in their laptop. It isn't hard if you want to learn. If you keep on thinking that it is hard, it is. So, in order to have a better life, we need to face the challenge.
In this video I especially like the fact that it is the Macintosh who doesn't admit to running Linux as easily as the PC-user does. I think that's very realistic in a way. I know for a fact that some of my friends (and all Mac-users) actually run Linux besides MAC OS X. Some don't even admit it, because "MAC OS X is so much better".
why do everyone say that the linux chick is a hottie? she's pretty and all but c'mon she's not THAT good lookin'...well i could understand if all the guys saying that are some nerdy virgins or sommin' but whatever..i'll drop off over here

Please do add suggestions if you have any.

i love the way linux users have a bigger 'penis envy' problem than mac ppl.
Yeah, dont worry its not the size that matters its the way you use it.

The funny thing about this is, that it isn't true :)
I haven't got a grudge against mac users, nor windows users. What i do have a grudge against is Mac users who just can't shut up about using a Mac. They got the problem.
Oh, and Mac OSX is even based on the linux kernel so try not to piss on your own shoes ;)

technincally, it's based on the BSD kernel not the linux kernel.
wm4k 3 years ago 3
Yar, I was going to point that out too. The BSD Unix kernel is quite different in design from Linux : ]
Twelveinchpvpness 3 years ago 3
Mac OS-X ist based on real UNIX (V 7 -> BSD) not on Linux.

BSD is Unix.

Exactly! lol It's obnoxious how some Mac users will claim that Macs are perfect. There's little performance difference between Macs and PC (windows) anymore. Linux is the shit, and I'm soon going to make the switch. :)

Growing up is not the remedy to understanding that the Macintosh is simply the easiest thing to install and use for most people and if you don't see that, you need to either try it or stay in your code-closet.

when was the last time u had to install a mac. try it and i bet that u'll end up running linux. and linux does not require coding knowledge unless u really wish to. and as fas as mac is considered. come-on what is there except a good looking difficult to understand interface?

dood. Linux is too hard to use for the masses. Do you understand or what?!
ericmcbride 4 years ago
Huh! What are you smoking? I started with nothing and now I can help people installing Linux in their laptop. It isn't hard if you want to learn. If you keep on thinking that it is hard, it is. So, in order to have a better life, we need to face the challenge.
Grow up!
