  • My name is Veronica and when I was little I used to ask my parents if I was named after anyone and they told me I was named after a song by Elvis Costello. Naturally I asked them what an Elvis Costello was and why they would name me after his song.

Now I think I know why...

  • When I first heard this, I wasn't aware he wrote this for his mother, I was thinking it was just old age.

  • I enjoy how this video is like Costello is commenting on his own song, like a documentary. It adds depth and sincerity.

  • @jabiv25 Yes, it does add to this song, a personal story about him and his mom.

  • I was named after this song.

I've never loved my name more.

  • @highschoolmusical841 It's hereditary, from what I know. My dad is starting to show signs. But he's too stupid to take care of it.

  • This song reminds me so much of my Mom! Love you! Shirley Sue.

  • i don't want to get old...

  • I can never make it through this video without the water works coming on full force.

  • What a fox :)

  • Just found this song. And now I'm happy. :)

  • I have always loved this song, but when I lost my mom recently to Huntington's this song took on a whole new meaning. RIP <3 you mom.

  • This is such a beautiful song. It's just an example of Elvis Costellos expansive brilliance!

  • @CuteFluffyLion I'm so sorry to hear about your grand mother :( I know,it's unusual for someone to admit they have HIV but at the time I was putting a video on here about my diagnosis to educate people on how to be careful. Btw - your name is hard to take seriously too, hah! ;-)

  • @HIVgirl1 You know what.. You're right. My name is kinda silly. :P

  • Lol,on the HD version of RE Veronica x,the Lab E.E plays this song xD

  • Every time i'm in spanish class, i always think of this song because my spanish name is Veronica

  • great song a review of ones life .....always kinda sad when you realize how much life goes on!!!!

  • I loved this song years ago when I didn't know what it was about. Now my mom has alzheimer's and I understand. It is so true. And touches me.

  • always loved the song, but now I know more about it I am very very saddened by it.

I guess time waits for nobody, so best we do what we can now, while we still have a chance & before it's too late.

  • @jude8098 @kozmikthing, I didn't age 30 years I aged 23 years

  • @jude8098 @kozmikthing, DO YOU GO ROUND EXAMINING OTHER PEOPLE'S COMMENTS JUST TO TRASH THEM?? I had turned 29 when the song came out, I was 50 when my mother died, my birthday is at the beginning of the year... YOU do the maths, it actually works. The comment was true - my mother had a very bad memory, then she got Essential Tremor, then she got Alzheimer's died. I don't need to lie about a sad event. Any more questions?

  • @HIVgirl1 Guess I didn't do the math. My apologies.

  • Elvis cowrote it with Sir Paul McCartney. Declan hit #19 in Billboard, 6-24-89. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

  • @kozmikthing - thanks for your comment "amazing, considering the song is only slightly over two decades old". The song is from 1989 when I was in my 20's, obviously were not. So all the info is correct. Thanks for the maths though.

  • Happy Birthday Elvis Costello (August 25)

  • when i was 18 i was mad about my uncle, when i was 25 i started missing him when i was 33 he died now am 40 and i have done every thing he told me to do and now i have a lovely family 1 and 3 years old ,a wonderfull job my house ,car, etc. and to many tears because my old man is not here any more

  • amo esse video..

  • This is one of the best DAMN performers I've ever seen

  • @32Ranking you get to KNOW a true MMA artist - a gift, you have been through so much more than most and are still here, ditto re. the Xa, ditto re. the books, I'm 52 just found the love of my life and the profession I want to be in. Please look forward to a great life ahead LOL!

  • When my ex wife and i was expecting our first child we was visiting her grandmother who was suffering Alzheimer's we told her we was getting married this was the last present memory she had till her passing away. When our daughter was born i wanted to call our daughter Veronica in memory of that moment we told her grandmother as this song reminded us of that time and to this day i still get tears when i hear it.

  • Nobody writes songs like this.....Costello=GENIUS

  • i really think this song could stand to be about twenty minutes longer.

p.s. - i believe that Elvis Costello could do an awesome cover of any song ever.

  • my mother has had alzheimers for 6 years now - my sister in law told me of this video - it really hit home and my heart. thanks elvis

  • Alzheimers.......

  • I was in love with a girl named Veronica once. Every time I hear this song it reminds me of her. I like to think of myself as a player, but that time the "player" fell in love. I have not been in love since. I miss you Veronica and wish you were here with me!

  • He's so damn hot in this video!

  • @patriciamatos85 I'm glad I'm not the only lady that can appreciate that he has a certain "hotness"! :~)

  • @whatanightmare1 Yeah, you know, he's not what people usually call handsome (specially nowadays) but I think he's got something really really attractive. I'm still trying to figure out what exactly it is...

  • My name is Veronica and Elvis Costello was born on the same day and year as I am, I'm currently caring for my mother who is 89 and has dementia, this song brings tears to my eyes. Great song!

  • @Alkame1 It truly is. Blessings to you and all caregivers who tend to our parents who are or who were taken by this dark disease. Went through it myself. Take Care and stay "in there" .

  • The older my mom gets....wow..starting to hit home..

  • The older my mom gets....wow..starting to hit home..

  • NEVER REALY LISTENED TO THIS SONG BEFORE, BUT HEARD IT THE OTHER DAY, AND REALISED WHAT IT WAS ALL ABOUT, LIFE ! MAYBE AS I AM GETTING OLDER, I REALISE, TIME IS SLIPPING BY, AND ONE DAY WE WILL ALL BE VERONICAS, GREAT SONG ELVIS.

  • Well done El u caught the sentiment perfectly

  • i take it all back El ,you are genius suffering the devils flu all day this is the only thing to cheer me up,u caught that sentiment very well

  • My favorite Elvis Costello. What a surprise that he did it with the one and only Paul McCartney. NOT!

  • when I first heard this song, I was in my 20's and loved the tune. When I was in my 30's I started to listen to the words. When I was in my 40's my mother had Alzheimer's and when I was in my 50's she was dead. I wished I had paid more attention in my 20's

  • @HIVgirl1 Went through 13 years watching my mother slowly taken away by dementia. You can never know whats coming. Just love your loved ones as much as you can now, so there are no regrets later. Costello is a true gentleman - empathic, humble and insightful. All seniors are testament to a life lived and thats the message I get from this song. Cheers.

  • @HIVgirl1 Hun, we all wish we paid more attention in our 20's. I was forced to grow up too fast&wish I paid more attention from 16-25, three of the next 5 were spnet in jail, now I'm all cleared out, but I'm 33 w/ a shit job, $1522.47 in the bank, 3 Xanax and an incredible library of books and cds. I got to fight professionally but that ended b/c of mistakes made during the years I didn't pay enough attention-well I was trying to cheer you up,but if you feel like I do now, I failed; miserably

  • @HIVgirl1 i know my mom passed away last year, same thing, my 91 year old father is in ALF

and it is happening again. Really sucks, but the song is right there.

  • @HIVgirl1 Pretty amazing, considering the song is only slightly over 2 decades old

  • @HIVgirl1 This song came out 20 years ago. How have you aged 30 years?

  • @HIVgirl1 That's really sad :< My grand mother has Alzheimer's and is pretty much crazy all the time.

But your screen name really is keeping me from taking you serious.

  • @HIVgirl1

    How true your words are

  • Elvis Costello has to be one of the ugliest entertainers of the 20th Century

  • @raunchyape Idiot

  • @BillyIsATwat23

  • I didn't realise all those years ago, that this song was about alziemhers. Now my mum is 90, it is so true. A brilliant woman with a sharp mind, Sadly she doesn't know who I am any more.

  • I just spoke on the phone with a young woman named Veronica. We've never met, but she was very helpful and nice and she gave me good news - the insurance company of the driver who caused the accident that damaged my van is going to pay to repair my van, as they found the other driver completely responsible for the accident. This made me really happy and relieved, so I thought it would be a nice gesture to introduce her to this song - I hope she reads this!

  • i bought spike-the album this was taken from-the week i started as a postie!

  • The mood just doesn't fit the song very well to make it as powerful as it should be. Sounds a bit too much like XTC's "Mayor of Simpleton" or "Generals and Majors", and it's a bit too slick to be as poignant as I hoped it would be. Anyone in agreement? I mean, Costello's at his lyrical best as usual, but the arrangement should have been way different if you ask me. Then again that's JUST me...expecting a more mordant lament, perhaps?

  • @oHelmslyo I guess that means that you don't like any of the Smiths or Morrisey's songs? It's part of the appeal, if you ask me. Such a sad topic yet the music reminds us not to let it get us down. Kinda like Girlfriend in a Coma. Still makes me feel like crying, anyway. (Probably because I'm getting on, myself!) One of his finest.

  • @weirdunclebob Actually, I'm a big fan of them. I just am not a fan of this particular song cause of the production. I love EC's early stuff till 82, that's the thing

  • This clip was shot in Australia (i know this because I'm related to the little girl Veronica).

  • Oh hello, I'm Veronica. ^.^

  • Sad but Great song

  • I think the elderly woman in this video is Gloria Stuart who played the older Rose in Titantic.

  • I love this song!

  • I dong know what year this video came out on vh1 but I had 3 children, now 29,28 and 22 and we all had this taped and watched it over and over, we all would tear up at the end, we all thought she died there. We also took care of a great great aunt at the time and the same stories came up and now she has died. We all still bring up the song in such a touching memory. My daughter is pregnant and I think I will mention naming her baby Veronica if a girl. Thanx Elvis and Paul from my children and I

  • @mrs4mozart ,What lovely sentiments, I have just put my own little baby down for a nap and I am thinking about my mum and my grand-mother and how they were once little girls and even babies who needed their mums as much as my little baby needs me!Time marches on and its so easy to forget sometimes..

  • My spanish teacher always used to sing this song when she would call my name! I love Elvis Costello[:

  • UTTERLY FANTASTIC VIDEO AND SONG -- ONE OF HIS BEST.

  • One of the best songs ever!

  • I love this video - ELVIS is just a genius - The video is so beautiful - I love him singing over the top of the song

  • true - its SO rare to see someone singing live over a studio take in a video....its his best vocal on the chorus - a VERY well produced song

  • one of the best bands live!

  • I love you Veronica. Thank you Elvis.

  • I love this song and how pogniant it is, and sad, remembering one's life, from birth to death, I always wished they made a movie based on this song.........

  • This is about us when we get older and get demencia and only live in the past and not now. This is what we remember. My mom passed away last year, remembered 40 years ago, but not yesterday, now my dad is in the same place. The only good thing about it is that no one really knows how miserable they are....they are in the past.....let's hope our past is happy!!

  • old school! takes me way back. a veritable treasure indeed!

  • What name does she speak out loud? 2:10

  • I do a pretty mean version of this song singing drunk by myself in my room.

  • This is the Elvis song I know the best. People tell me my voice reminds them of Elvis' and I take that as a compliment.

  • Sometimes Elvis would be overly dramatic, and sometimes he'd come across as a pretentious pompous prick. By the way that talk show he has sucks. Fucker should shut up and sing 'Pump it up".!!

  • This song has an epic chorus thanks to McCartneys co-write credit. She spoke his name out loud again!!

  • im ashamed of clicking on this video

  • @MrLivinAngel don't say that.

  • A very touching, moving song and vid thanks for sharing, alzimers is a terrible affliction and more research is needed.

  • Great song. Great video.

  • I'm happy my name is Veronica : )

  • gr8 song!! <3

  • I love this song cause my name is Veronica!

  • a beautiful song

  • Can't ever watch this video without tearing up. No matter how many times I see it!

  • Declan Patrick MacManus had a severe need to speak. He is a genius

  • this song makes me cry

  • Gorgeous - one of my favourites of Elvis. Lovely celebration of life.

  • screw the 6 people who gave this song a thumbs down..

  • One of my all time favorite songs.

  • Beautiful. I didn't catch this song for over a decade, and it still can get tears in my eyes...

  • Brilliant and touching, Bravo.

  • The talent and art that can be contained in one song is astonishing. Example: this.

  • Hows great to get to see this video and hear this great song again! I loved it when it came out in 1989.

  • Beautiful. This song and video introduced me to one of the greatest geniuses in the history of popular music.

  • I cry every time I hear this song. I love this song and have since I was in high school when it came out. It means even more to me as I get older. Life goes way to fast.

  • @debj2008 don't worry, after this live you'll still live plenty.

  • killer song

  • It's so very, very touching, and he delivers it like no one else could.

He is slightly light on those awful, dehumanising nursing homes, Elvis can be scathing, which is slightly surprising, but then again, it's not about them, is it?

  • Was Veronica his Nan? So upsetting to watch.

  • @patc161 She was his grandmother.

    peace

  • moje jméno :-)))

  • Ver mi, lepšia pieseň o Veronike nie je!

  • Every woman should have a song about her!

  • Most of those songs, like most women, or even most people, would be completely unremarkable.

  • A great song from a great album! Somehow I missed the video when SPIKE came out..glad to see they tried to have the video live up to the song.

  • Love this song!!!! So happy he sings about this beautiful name :)

  • when a 12 year old loves this song, you know it is either a really good song, or he grew up in a weird family who listens to oldies. In my case, it is both.

  • @jewbybrother579 me too :)

  • @jewbybrother579 want a cookie?

  • @jewbybrother579 Sad when 80s music is considered oldies now! Being born in 80... It's weird. i'm creeping up on 31. and sometimes the 80s don't feel like they were that long ago.

  • @DanaBfrom207 I think I just consider it oldies since 1) I'm 14 and 2) my dad keeps all of his songs, ranging from the late 50's to the early 80's, on the same cd's. So i kinda just consider it all to be oldies.

  • @jewbybrother579 Join the club buddy. I've been privillege with that same complex combination. I think it's a beautiful thing, really.

  • my boss loves this song cuz its her name

  • Does anyone know what he sings at the end of the chorus, where his voice goes high in the background? I can't find the line on any lyrics page.

I remember seeing this vid on MTV back in the day and loving the melody. When I put the song on my Ipod I got curious about the lyrics, and wow, what a mind-blowing pop song. Like an earlier poster said, how can such a great pop song make one cry? Kudos, Elvis.

  • it is sad to see their minds going(going, gone) everytime i go see my mother she asks if i still work for the (atlanta) constitution- haven't worked there for 15 years!

  • @hamhawks74

I know what you mean... My better-half's mind is starting to go... It scares me to know one day he'll have no idea who I am... The memory of me will be gone..

  • Sad when people get old and confused...when my dad was fading out with cancer at age 74 I tried to cheer him up talking about the good life he had lived...didnt seem to help...but I'm glad he lived a good life.

  • che de puta madre este tema...

  • Do a google search on "elvis costello lyrics", you should be good.

  • where can i find the lyrics of this song?

    x

  • just type Elvis COstello Vernicia Lyrics into google or even betetr blackle

  • What a good pop tune, and you can tell where McCartney helped with the writing as well as pick out his bass playing.

Blueeyesofice - it isn't "snarky lip synching," but he is actually singing over pieces of the song.

Heavenlyhot - as far as cover versions, I know of one by the "Dust Poets," a band out of Canada, which is kind of a folksy duet. Not sure if this is the version you are speaking of but it's the only cover I could find on MP3.

  • awesome

  • his intentions are a bit marred by his snarky lip synching.

  • who knows, maybe that was her sense of humour. she probably knows how he is. or knew. it's an inside thing between them.

  • Really? I love that about this video.

  • I love this song :)

  • Just a great song.

  • I love this song, even now it's played on the radio after hours.

Who is the female that sings this song? I think that E-Costello sings the song best but the girl who has re-sung it is also very good.

    Anyone know her name?

    Jessica

  • Sarah Masen

  • Reminds me of my Nana...I miss her.

  • Who the hell is singing along with him...and why?

  • Never mind.

  • It makes you think though, were there lot's of women like Veronica who knew lot's of youngmen that were their age that were lost in WW1!

  • i've known this song since i was 4, and i was so mad when my dad's cd with this song on it broke. i love this song!!

  • "It was all of sixty-five years ago,

When the world was the street where you lived"

    Lovely wordage, Mr Costello.

  • What a fab song, it's been a while.
