My name is Veronica and when I was little I used to ask my parents if I was named after anyone and they told me I was named after a song by Elvis Costello. Naturally I asked them what an Elvis Costello was and why they would name me after his song.
@CuteFluffyLion I'm so sorry to hear about your grand mother :( I know,it's unusual for someone to admit they have HIV but at the time I was putting a video on here about my diagnosis to educate people on how to be careful. Btw - your name is hard to take seriously too, hah! ;-)
@jude8098@kozmikthing, DO YOU GO ROUND EXAMINING OTHER PEOPLE'S COMMENTS JUST TO TRASH THEM?? I had turned 29 when the song came out, I was 50 when my mother died, my birthday is at the beginning of the year... YOU do the maths, it actually works. The comment was true - my mother had a very bad memory, then she got Essential Tremor, then she got Alzheimer's died. I don't need to lie about a sad event. Any more questions?

When my ex wife and i was expecting our first child we was visiting her grandmother who was suffering Alzheimer's we told her we was getting married this was the last present memory she had till her passing away. When our daughter was born i wanted to call our daughter Veronica in memory of that moment we told her grandmother as this song reminded us of that time and to this day i still get tears when i hear it.
I was in love with a girl named Veronica once. Every time I hear this song it reminds me of her. I like to think of myself as a player, but that time the "player" fell in love. I have not been in love since. I miss you Veronica and wish you were here with me!
@whatanightmare1 Yeah, you know, he's not what people usually call handsome (specially nowadays) but I think he's got something really really attractive. I'm still trying to figure out what exactly it is...

I didn't realise all those years ago, that this song was about alziemhers. Now my mum is 90, it is so true. A brilliant woman with a sharp mind, Sadly she doesn't know who I am any more.
I just spoke on the phone with a young woman named Veronica. We've never met, but she was very helpful and nice and she gave me good news - the insurance company of the driver who caused the accident that damaged my van is going to pay to repair my van, as they found the other driver completely responsible for the accident. This made me really happy and relieved, so I thought it would be a nice gesture to introduce her to this song - I hope she reads this!

The mood just doesn't fit the song very well to make it as powerful as it should be. Sounds a bit too much like XTC's "Mayor of Simpleton" or "Generals and Majors", and it's a bit too slick to be as poignant as I hoped it would be. Anyone in agreement? I mean, Costello's at his lyrical best as usual, but the arrangement should have been way different if you ask me. Then again that's JUST me...expecting a more mordant lament, perhaps?
@oHelmslyo I guess that means that you don't like any of the Smiths or Morrisey's songs? Part of the appeal, if you ask me. Such a sad topic yet the music reminds us not to let it get us down. Kinda like Girlfriend in a Coma. Still makes me feel like crying, anyway. (Probably because I'm getting on, myself!) One of his finest.

@weirdunclebob Actually, I'm a big fan of them. I just am not a fan of this particular song cause of the production. I love EC's early stuff till 82, that's the thing

@mrs4mozart ,What lovely sentiments, I have just put my own little baby down for a nap and I am thinking about my mum and my grand-mother and how they were once little girls and even babies who needed their mums as much as my little baby needs me!Time marches on and its so easy to forget sometimes..
I love this song and how pogniant it is, and sad, remembering one's life, from birth to death, I always wished they made a movie based on this song.........
This is about us when we get older and get demencia and only live in the past and not now. This is what we remember. My mom passed away last year, remembered 40 years ago, but not yesterday, now my dad is in the same place. The only good thing about it is that no one really knows how miserable they are....they are in the past.....let's hope our past is happy!!
Sometimes Elvis would be overly dramatic, and sometimes he'd come across as a pretentious pompous prick. By the way that talk show he has sucks. Fucker should shut up and sing 'Pump it up".!!
This makes me think of my Granny. Her name wasn't Veronica; it was Lucy. She had Alzheimer's and spent her last years in a nursing home.
This song also reminds me of my Granny-In-Law. Her name is Veronica, but she's is as sharp as a bloody razor, so the name is where the comparison might end! :)
I cry every time I hear this song. I love this song and have since I was in high school when it came out. It means even more to me as I get older. Life goes way to fast.
It's so very, very touching, and he delivers it like no one else could.
He is slightly light on those awful, dehumanising nursing homes, Elvis can be scathing, which is slightly surprising, but then again, it's not about them, is it?
when a 12 year old loves this song, you know it is either a really good song, or he grew up in a weird family who listens to oldies. In my case, it is both.
@jewbybrother579 Sad when 80s music is considered oldies now! Being born in 80... It's weird. i'm creeping up on 31. and sometimes the 80s don't feel like they were that long ago.
@DanaBfrom207 I think I just consider it oldies since 1) I'm 14 and 2) my dad keeps all of his songs, ranging from the late 50's to the early 80's, on the same cd's. So i kinda just consider it all to be oldies.
Does anyone know what he sings at the end of the chorus, where his voice goes high in the background? I can't find the line on any lyrics page.
I remember seeing this vid on MTV back in the day and loving the melody. When I put the song on my Ipod I got curious about the lyrics, and wow, what a mind-blowing pop song. Like an earlier poster said, how can such a great pop song make one cry? Kudos, Elvis.
it is sad to see their minds going(going, gone) everytime i go see my mother she asks if i still work for the (atlanta) constitution- haven't worked there for 15 years!
I know what you mean... My better-half's mind is starting to go... It scares me to know one day he'll have no idea who I am... The memory of me will be gone..
Sad when people get old and confused...when my dad was fading out with cancer at age 74 I tried to cheer him up talking about the good life he had lived...didnt seem to help...but I'm glad he lived a good life.
What a good pop tune, and you can tell where McCartney helped with the writing as well as pick out his bass playing.
Blueeyesofice - it isn't "snarky lip synching," but he is actually singing over pieces of the song.
Heavenlyhot - as far as cover versions, I know of one by the "Dust Poets," a band out of Canada, which is kind of a folksy duet. Not sure if this is the version you are speaking of but it's the only cover I could find on MP3.
My name is Veronica and when I was little I used to ask my parents if I was named after anyone and they told me I was named after a song by Elvis Costello. Naturally I asked them what an Elvis Costello was and why they would name me after his song.
Now I think I know why...

The talent and art that can be contained in one song is astonishing. Example: this.

DanaBfrom207 10 months ago

Not sure if this is the version you are speaking of but it's the only cover I could find on MP3.

his intentions are a bit marred by his snarky lip synching.

I love this song, even now it's played on the radio after hours.
Who is the female that sings this song? I think that E-Costello sings the song best but the girl who has re-sung it is also very good.
Anyone know her name?
