i don't know if it's very wrong or a possibility, but i substitute the ball for my computer chair. when i do leg curl-in, with the back on the floor, for hamstring, it "works"
For people who can't quite do this version of the exercise, you can start with the ball under your thighs. Then, after you practice the exercie for a few weeks (or whatever), gradually move the ball down under your shins to make it more difficult.

What's great about this exercise is that you can do this exact same crunch on the total gym. It's also great for your hamstrings and glutes.
