Of course, SP remembers the only great album he`s ever played on. I always thought he did good on that one, and then he became such a light-weight sissy.....and here we have him letting his poodle friends disgrace East Of Asteroid!
@helmuthb I wouldn't necessarily call Stanley Clarke or Jeff Beck light-weights. Also, the original East of Asteroids performance had six players. Here it looks like there are only three. Ok. These guys are no MacCormick and Manzanera.... point taken.
@helmuthb His "poodle friends" seem to acquit themselves rather well, actually. I'm not sure what I'm missing -- I foolishly was happy to see him pull this out of his hat and grateful that someone had caught it and shared it.
The name of this is "East of Asteroid," and it's a medley of "East of Echo" composed by Phil Manzanera (from his Diamond Head album), and "Mummy Was An Asteroid, Daddy Was A Small Non-Stick Kitchen Utensil" (composed by Bill MacCormick) from the album "Mainstream" by the band Quiet Sun (featuring Manzanera on guitars). "East of Asteroid" appears on 801:Live with Manzanera and MacCormick joined by Brian Eno, Lloyd Watson, Francis Monkman, and, of course, Simon Phillips.
One of my all time favorite SP drum parts. He was very young at the time and it is an excellent example of his mastery of the drum kit. Thank you so much for posting this!
The original live version of this is on 801 Live, recorded at a music festival in England in the mid 70's. SP was about 18 or 19 at the time. I had the original on vinyl then found a CD recently on ebay. Very good sound quality considering when it was recorded. And yes, it's sound like 13/8 to me.
Does anyone have a better angle view of this performance?

Is 801 Live the first ever album SP played on at all? or was it Dave Greenslades "Cactus Choir" ?

I forgot to add that this performance is excellent... I think Manzanera would be proud...
