It has to do with the concept that red means stop, no matter where you see it (not just lights and stop signs). Most emergency vehicles have red lighting in the US, and most states have a law that says you must stop your vehicle for any emergency vehicle with steady or flashing red lights.

They get seen heaps. We have really colourful flashing lights on our Emergency vehicles.

just having a fire, emt, or pmd cert doesnt give you the right to run red/blue lights on your private vehicle. every state has different laws on what lights are for what purpose, but to have lights in public service colors you need a permit regardless of where you live (unless its for off-road or car show use)

As a volunteer firefighter, or EMT, you can legally have emegency lights. The colors depend on your state/county laws, and what you are. In my area, you can have blue lights if you're a fireman, and Green lights if you're an EMT. and, most departments require you to put you're 4 ways on when responding to an emergency, along with the lights

Your lights are to low, if you where coming up on a larger vehicle - i.e. an 18Wheeler- there is a very small chance that the driver will be able to see your lights and be able to give you safe clearance.
