Some of the units can only attack adjacent units, and others can attack units farther away. It's useful to have some units that can attack from a few squares away because of how each unit can travel over different types of terrain. Without ranged attacks it would be too easy for a diplodocus to just wade into the water and be untouchable by the land-dwelling units.
