I dislocated my knee when I was 14 but back then I was not recommended to go on an operation since I was too young for it. I have lived with the problem since then (i'm almost 34 yrs old now) but really i have no pain at all (only very rarely when weather changes). But indeed when I move my knee it looks that it slips out but not hurting at all.I was told I have to do the operation before getting 40 yrs old due to the risk of arthritis development.I'm really skeptical if I really need to do it...
oh and on top of that my dad keeps telling me if i start running my fucking knee caps will go back into the groove i only wish i had regular knees for a day or at least let me play sports again im even starting to get fat
This shit has not worked so far but im not going to give up on my dream to be able to go out and lay varsity basket ball or football it all started when i hit a growth spurt that sucks i was on varsity as a 9th and 10th grader now i cant even drop back wihout my knee dislocating patella alta sucks all i want to know is god why me. But i will die before i quit
I have an instable knee, Its been that way since I was a little girl, but i think I have lived with it this long, I can manage for the rest of my life..because this surgery looks painful
I have an instable knee, Its been that way since I was a little girl, but i think I have lived with it this long, I can manage for the rest of my life..because this surgery looks painful
@cherokeedoll1 im 16, i had this surgery plus they put a skin graph in my knee. i needed the surgery for an unstable kneecap. i had unstable knee caps since i was 5 years old. Trust me if you can handle your knees dislocating you can handle this. i was up and walking in 2 weeks. i had it done to both my knees. it doesn't hurt all that bad.
@TheEmobabe94 Im glad your better now. I have one knee that is unstable, it does and has twist out of place every now and then, but it always goes back into place on its own. Ive lived with it for about 35 years now,,it doesnt happen that often, so I think I will tough it out unless it gets worse in the future. Your situation may have been worse than mine. Glad the surgery worked out well for you
I might be wrong, but this surgery method, is just a suture of the damaged MPFL, that already showed to not fix the problem properly. The most successful method is the build of a new, or second one MPFL , even stronger, transplanted from a small part of your own Patellar Tendon, wich is the most powerfull ligament of our body. So you gonna be with your natural and damaged MPFL, plus a new MPFL working from the final of the femur, right to the patella, giving your knee 3..4x more stability ...
i had this surgery with a lateral release a month ago, and its already out of place again. wooptydoo and my therapist said its one of the most painful surgeries ever. well, mine was.
oh wow, im going to be sick; this is going to happen to me in just another couple weeks, and I need both knees done at the same time. This is just one of the procedures I need done and as I hear, this is the simplest, wish me luck. Talk about scaring someone away from surgery! yuk!
i had this surgery march 22 2011 i hope it is successful i dont really see much of a huge difference but the doctor sire thinks so i have to have my othe knee done in a month
I dislocated my knee twice in 4 month time span. I just had an open patella realignment and im only 15. 1st time all i did was turn real quick and second time i was hitting while playin softball and i had a brace on. Its been two weeks and i can put full weight on it but waiting for therapy in a week. Word of advice...dont have a lateral release and if you need surgery. Get it done.
I had total reconstructive knee surgery on both knees 6 months apart, and I was fifteen at the time. My orthpedic doctor realigned my legs and set the knee cap back in places and repaired tissue and ligaments and such. The recovery was aggravating because I wanted to be up and going places with friends. I missed 3 months of school total for both knees. I went through rigorous physical therapy as well. Now I'm fine&my knees don't bother me at all. The surgeries with arthroscopy are well worth it.
I had a lateral release 11 yrs ago. Worst decision of my life. Not only did the surgery not help, but I have severe pain in the two lateral incisions. I think it's just scar tissue but it hurts 24/7. I'm wondering if cortisone shots right into where the doctor went it would help break some of that scar tissue down?
i've had 2 fulkersons ops and two pfj stabilisation using my hip, trochleoplastys and something else that i really can't remember! which is quite bad seeing as i only had it done 11 weeks ago...but anyway it seems to have fixed all my problems!! :)
I have loose bodies in my knee. I can feel them crunch everytime i bend my knee. Is it urgent I go through arthroscopic knee surgery to get these removed? What are some of the dangers of not getting these removed? Thanks!
I've dislocated my knee twice in the space of a year, ive to go tomorrow to see if i need surgery, my knee cap (patella) moves around far too much and goes werever it wants, i think i'll need surgery unfortunately :(
any one had a knee arthroscopy, micro fracture, medial patellfemoral ligament reconstruction with use of allograt. using anesthesia and a nerve block. please let me know how it went!!! thanks
i pray and pray i wont have to do this becuz i dislocated my knee camp about 3 weeks ago and i got a brace but i really really hope it dont happen again! plz god!
@TheMRemnesty i dislocated my knee 3 times alredy, the most recent was 3 weeks ago. im going to a knee specialist to see if i need this surgey. i had a brace on when i dislocated it the 3rd time. I suggest you get i real good brace and dont play on unstable or slippery surfaces. Also Dont twist your knee and suddenly put pressure, thats how i dislocatted it the 2nd time!
I dislocated my knee 3 times, and wearing a brace makes the pain worse when it comes out.
I am now going for left ilibo band release, medial patello-fermoral ligament reconstruction arthroscopically and a Fulkerson's type medialsation of tibal tubercle. I was wondering if anyone had to get this surgery and would i be able to compete in sports whichout another accurence of dislocation??

Isn't this just about the coolest thing in the world? I got to watch my arthroscopic surgery and talk a bit with my surgeon during the whole thing. I don't do well under general anesthesia, so asked for a spinal and limb block instead. Was a bit high from the relaxation meds they gave me, but still was able to learn a bit from what was happening with my knee. Not all surgeons will allow the patient to stay awake during the procedure, but mine did. He felt comfy enough to do it. Very skilled doc!
Ive dislocated my kneecaps 5 times, broke it once, through playing soccer.
Had a proximal & distal realignment of both knees done in the last few years, totally successful. No more dislocations, although you have to give it big effort in the gym, esp the leg press!
Only drawbacks are having the screws at the top of the shin, I can't now kneel or crouch down, but I'll take that over having instable, dislocating patella. It's hell on hearth so if you have problems, go see your surgeon!!!!!
My kneecap subluxated 11 days ago. I am wearing a neoprene brace which gives it stability. After a week I could walk on my leg without the knee brace, up and dwon stairs with no problem but a feeling of instability. Does every kneecap dislocation have a high chance of dislocating again or do most become stable again with time?
Once you dislocate it, it damages the tissues in your knee, and makes it more likely to occur again. If, however, you take time out to rebuild the muscles around the knee, you might get away with it but it it happens 2 or 3 times i'd go for corrective surgery before its too late.
Wearing orthopaedic insoles in your shoes also may help, they realign the tracking of your foot, taking the pressure off the medial part of your knee, which controls your kneecap. Build up your VMO and you might be ok.
Second this, I'm 16, I dislocated my kneecap, like, five months ago, and left it two months before getting back into sport. After this I did light building-up of the quads muscle, then did loads of biking. It really helps. I know many people who've dislocated it once, then built it up to be stronger than before.
my advice is dtni wear a strap if you do your knee area will depend on it i have dislocated my knee 15 times and doing it in a knee strap makes the pain 5 times worse. and stability depends on your weight if your bow legged or not and if you do the exercise regulary. in sted of your legs being straight like this I I THEY ARE )( <- LIKE THAT GET YOUR DR TO HAVE A LOKK TO SEE IF YOUR ARE OR NOT
I was told I could have this for my dislocating patella. After I woke up, my surgeon told me that he ended up having to do a full 3-in-1 realignment using open knee surgery. It sucked BAD - two screws and a bone graft for each knee - but it was WELL WORTH IT! No more dislocations! Woo hoo!
i believe i have this problem at the moment, i am wearing a grip and my doctor has put me in for physio but im unsure as to when i should be back to work im only a dish cleaner but it involves standing for hours and walking with plates in a kitchen, atm im off crutches but walking is difficult, straining and i occasionaly lose balance , i know the details r scetchy but does any1 have any reccomendations?
@jeffhalbrecht seeing my ortho and scared becuase mine knee cap is ALWAYS on the left side and neither bracing or therapy brought it to the center. it just stays on the left side so walking I have to walk stiff legged with a brace and severe pain. I am only 36 but it also makes a horrible pop and grind noise. x rays say it is permanately dislocated.
I just recently saw a doctor about my injured knee & this is the surgery he wants to do. On Valentine's Day of this year, I had a baby & my husband works full time throughout the day which would make it difficult for me to watch the baby. What would you recommend? Do I wait til the baby is older or get the surgery now before I have more children? What is the recovery of this surgery like? He stated the patella realignment as well as tightening of ligaments on one side & loosening the other side
There is minimal pain. The same as with a simple knee arthroscopy. The surgery is done as an out patient, and patients seem to do fine with occasional use of pain medication post surgery.
my grandson who is eelopmentally disabled just had knee surgery but the cut him open, he knee cap was on the side of his knee, now that the cast is off his leg is very bent, wish he could have had this surgery instead. We're having an awful time trying to get hi m walking again.
this problem once and for all so It never happens again while playing hockey, well as long as I dont take a bad check, your comment would be greatly apreciated, because it seems im the only optomistic person other than my doctors about this injury which from what I have read can be fixed like new if the right surgery technique is used
Hi Jeff thank u for posting the video. My knee cap popped to the outside of my let leg for the first time ever when I was playing hockey at the age of 20. It had never happend before that. I then did regular rehab and knew it wasn't nearly as tight as it should have been. I waited 3 months after painful therapy and I noticed a cyst. Any ways it popped out again when i tryed to play hockey 3 months after and now im opting for surgery, any advice what so ever. I am confident surgery will fix
Thanks, was wondering your opinion on open lateral retinacular lengthening on maltracking of the patella vs. LRR and repair of MPFL...s/p acute dislocation in teen age athlete?
Are patella like ligaments/cartilage in that when there's trauma to it, it doesn't self heal ?
I've looked up various patella strenghtening excersises on-line like the 'roman chair' and standing on one leg and doing semi-deep knee bends. Are these effective in your opinion ?
If rehabilitation and bracing are not effective, then a realignment procedure may be the next necessary step. However, only your examining and treating physician can make that determination.
My right knee was given the Impression as a Subluxing Patellae by my Doctor under examination. If my knee cap is slightly dislocating outwards (to the right), why is there then the pain/popping on the inside of the knee? I am a bicycle racer and the downward stroke (or weight bearing side) of my pedalling action on my right leg is now a problem with it now popping all the time. I'm assuming a surgical proceedure is my only option to correct this now. Your thoughts.

Pain is usually a separate issue than instability , and may require a different or additional procedure to treat that particular problem.

I do not think that an isolated latereal retinacular lengthening or release is likely to be effective without a proper reefing of the MPFL

Thanks, was wondering your opinion on open lateral retinacular lengthening on maltracking of the patella vs. LRR and repair of MPFL...s/p acute dislocation in teen age athlete?

thanks Dr Halbrecht.
