in any accident, momentum is Mass times Velocity. The rapid transfer of momentum in a short interval of time is called pulse, or MV/T, and V/T=a os MV/T=M*A, or Force. So, a 4,000 LB car has a better chance in an accident than a 2500 LB or 3,000 LB car. So all this video shows is a side impact, which is very unlikely. The most common impacts are rear-end collision and front collission. In this case, the car has plenty of "crush space" with long trunk and hood and a lot of mass.
@AGeekWithAShotgun 1st, you in america drive big cars cus your fat and your gas is cheap, next to free compared to in eu, we all dont live of our dads and grandparents contribution so we drive normal cars which dont drink all fuel in five minutes..
I guess we just like big cars because they are badass and very utilitarian, they can do a lot of things, unlike European sedans....we can go offroading and a lot of stuff....
I have a '98 Jeep Cherokee, it gets about 17mpg in town and around 25 highway, its not bad.....
but it has a 4.0L inline 6 engine which will last forever, Im at 215k miles still strong..will go up to 400k...unlike European cars which die out quick, German Engineering is complex luxury but unreliable
@AGeekWithAShotgun ok, well we´ve got roads in eu so no desperate need to go offroad, otherwise you just get a Mercedes geländewagen or something.. my grandpa has a cherokee it takes about 2,78L on 100kms (dont know mpg) and it has seriously bad acceleration to power ratio.. and unless youve experienced german engineering i dont think you should say that its unreliable cus i cant think of a more reliable car than an old diesel merc! ive driven 2 mercs sitting3 years and one is my daily driver..
I wouldn't drive to an older Mercedes to drive my life.
My point still stands, German engineering is very complex. Although efficient, they are prone to failure and they break often and are very expensive to repair.
We have roads here in the USA, too, but it's just funner to go offroad
@AGeekWithAShotgun you dont know what your talking about man, if you mean break down as in the unnecessary electric equippment you order for import cars then i agree, but the engineering of german cars are the best in the world, i think you´re just yellaous (spelling..?) for ex watch: "5th gear destroys a nice mercedes" test, its a good test to check the quality of a good old benz. im sure american cars can be reliable aswell, but i wouldnt drive one around europe like i would with my merc..
I'm not jealous at all, I'm just saying the engineering in German cars is very complicated. I used to assist at a Chrysler / VW dealership that did work on other cars, the majority of cars I saw come in with problems were German cars, VWs, mercedes, BMWs, ect.
German cars, Best in luxury and performance? Yes. Most reliable? No.
The most reliable cars are Fords, Jeeps and Honda (except the transmissions in Hondas are a bit crappy....)
@AGeekWithAShotgun well to put it like this when mercedes started coop with chrysler in late 90´s they went from top 3 in most satified customers to 10th from the bottom, all merc up until 1995 are the best cars, but now after 2008 they´ve become better, they didnt call them "over engineered" for nothing.
we have a -95 hinda civic and must say it has a good engine, but the body is now only plastic and rust, window cranks, door handle, coupe fan and much else dont work aswell
Mercedes-Benz going to shit had nothing to do with the Chrysler "Merger of Equals". They gobbled Chrysler up and spit them out (like ardent Nazis, honestly...). The problem was the American educated Jürgen Schrempp, and his lack of foresight.
@Jackup460 all i hear about america is that their rednecks or hillbillys or whatever who mates with their syblings and cousins and the incest children sit on the front porch with a banjo..
@dubster407 says you are from germany on your profile. i don't think all american cars are ugly, but i will agree on the safety being terrible. i would prefer an audi, bmw, or volvo for my choice of car. all of those have proved themselves to be quite safe in a crash. i'll agree that u.s. car manufacturers are pretty bad at their jobs but hopefully you don't view america collectively in the same way. have a good day
@mycrimsonregrets sry, i see the post is misunderstanding. i read a post here somewhere and missed to answer directly - don't know why. i got just a little fed up :P but i just wanted to say the same as you did. unfortunately some of your people don't think your way and find it great to build cars with 8 cylinders but bad equipment (i think that was the reason). however there are plenty of good american cars. for example i like the chrysler 300m very much, or the dodge charger :D
@dubster407 yea, it's alright. there are plenty of people in my country who are ignorant, criminals, lazy, or just plain stupid, i just don't like it when someone from another country judges the usa as a whole based off a the idiots who make headline by doing something foolish. there are also plenty of really great people here. v8's are for big trucks and for sport cars. i don't like 4 cylinders too much as the run rough, but love 6 cylinder engines. the run smooth, efficient, adequate power.
@mycrimsonregrets yeah sorry for that, i really didn't want to say americans are a bunch of idiots and i don't think so neither :). was just a spontaneous reaction.
anyway i agree, the 4 cylinder diesel my company vehicle (volkswagen golf) has is really rough, although i like it, because it has 140 hp. you know, no speed limits here, let it go xP
@dubster407 it's alright, no offense taken. i am guessing you are talking about the vw tdi diesel engines? i have heard some pretty good things about them but i haven't had any experience dealing with those engines yet. maybe they should put out a smaller displacement 6 cylinder turbo charged diesel, possibly an inline if it will fit. well, it was good chatting and take care.
Its interesting how you can see from the front view camera that the car really moves around the dummy when it gets hit, and the dummy does move until the "dummy car" hits it.
My 05 CVPI has the roll bar and side air bags, so i think I'm good when nature decides to throw a Concrete slab at me on a 70mph T-Bone. Well, at least alive, if nothing else. Long Live Ford!
Well, I have a 2010 Grand Marquis so I better watch out for those out of control giant pieces of concrete that frequently come barreling down the highway!
I see many Crown Vic patrol cars equipped with side roll bars mounted just behind the b pillars. I have an '08 Mercury GM, a ford in a suit, and it sure feels safe to me. Course nobody's T-boned me yet. But my '67 Impala 4 door hardtop was the most vulnerable side impact car I ever had. No b pillar and 7 feet of open window space.
Show me any car that doesn't cave in when a concrete slab doing 75 broadsides it. This test is bullshit, Crown Vic is one of the safest cars out there.
there are so many dumb fucking people who are oblivious to the fact that in a side impact collision it is rare for your front airbags to deploy. The video was talking about side-impact airbags.
my grandfather totaled one of these cars and was able to walk away from it. his was a 99. but these cars have had front airbags forever so what is up with this video.
@mi3pwns I totaled my 99 crown vic 4 months ago. Deer jumped out and I slammed into it. Walked away without a scratch. This video is balls, crown vic is very safe.
I dont give a shit how bad it did, they are rugged reliable cars and if they are good enough for the police then they are good enough for me. Proud owner of a 1998 P71 and a 1987 2-door.
@t5mikka i wouldnt consider a panda much safer..but then again you get 5 series, bmws porsches and audis...the best weve got is a dodge charger hahaha
@t5mikka you are lucky you dont have this in your country because if u crash into one of them in a frontal collison you are pretty much dead CROWN VICS all the way!!!!!
Well it makes sense that the pillar bend so badly, the car is so freakin heavy, that it barelly moved from place, of course the pillar took more impact just because of that..
yeah i agree with just about any car getting broadsided your just screwed in general..its gonna hurt...and look how many cars a crown vic is bigger than..most of them on the road...so good luck in those small cars...lol
my sister got in an accident on her prom day in one of these. Deffinatly not good results. The car was hit twice cause the first car plowed into the rear spining the car to the other side of the highway where an oncomming car hit the front
sorry for my bad english but i really want to say this crash test it's not fair i see in my country crown vic and mercury grand marquis crash it's nice for a cheab car than more cheab cars i see a gmc subrban crash into a grand marquis doors i swear the gmc was smashed in the front and the guy drive mercury was injuerd and i see crown vic smash the lamp on the street and the lamp fall on the ground and the guy just have a little injuerd i don't care i love crown victoria i love it when i was 11
I do agree, the B pillar needs to be stronger, besides, the car's already a boat what's a hundred extra pounds of reinforcement? However when I hit an older one in the exact same way at 37mph, it didn't exhibit NEARLY the damage this video implies. It all boils down to where you hit a vehicle and how much force you hit it with.
@yellowmusicfreak test partitions don't have crush zones, which is why the impacts are always worse during the crash tests. Anyone can brag about a car that tests poorly in low speed impacts, but the fact is, these cars are involved in high speed, high energy collisions almost every day and the results turn out more favorable than this.
yeah, a lot of cars do quite bad really in the side impact, ex BMW and Audi got quite bad (for being BMW and Audi :P ) on the last test, only Saab and Volvo got top score overall. Convertible-test gave the same score
Most vehicles do quite poorly in the side impact. Usually you aren't parked if you get hit sideways, so a T-Bone impact is not quite as disastrous. The P71 (Police Interceptor) has steel beams through the doors, which the civillian (this video's) model does not.
I've worked on these cars for 19 years, nothing has changed structurely yet ppl keep trying to find problems. I have been in the towing business for 10 yrs and can tell you that impact is one of the best for stand-ups then I have witnessed personally. I have seen a lot of accidents and the Ford Crown Victoria is the #1 ranked in my opinion for safety. With as severe accidents I have seen, one was fatal in a vic and that's due to the quard rail through the window, use your imagination
crown vics are nice, p71 and Mercury Marauder among my favorite full size cars (although I like the Caprice/Impala SS of the 90s better) Its a shame they didnt do better in this test.
@cbburtraw I think it's a design thing. Since the Crown Vic is longer than most cars & the test crash cart is always the same dimensions & weight, the cart applies pressure over a smaller surface area. If this was a Small Yaris, that same pressure would be applied overa wider surface area as the Yaris is smaller & takes up more SA on the test carts front-end
@beatlespersun that's definitely true at least to some extent, but they should take that into consideration when designing them. I know they could be a lot better with some reinforcement on that B pillar. The main reason smaller cars do better is because they get hit in the front/rear fenders- past the doors. The smallest cars get hit in the wheels- thats the best place to take a side hit in terms of safety (not so much mechanically... lol)
@cbburtraw & also consider the Crown Vic was designed over 35 yrs. ago. They might of changed the skin & exterior of the car, but it's been using the same old Panther frame all this time which sadly wasn't made for SUV's side-crashing them at the time :(
hmm whats up with that guy saying that if its a v8 then they are not looking for speed lol the fastest car - SSC Ultimate Aero is a v8 and so is the Saleen S7 is the worlds third fastest car and is also a V8. lol he should have know what he was talking about before talking bad about a good car. And dang i hate to see the crown victoria get messed up like that.
I had a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis with the side airbags. What I'm seeing does make sense out of what I experienced with my 04. I went from driving a 90 to the 04 and noticed a ton of road noise.
I have a 2003 ford crown victoria police interceptor and I'm an 18 year old mechanic and I like the looks of my car, the Grand Marquis does seem kinda plain in my opinion but they're well built cars nonetheless
These IIHS crash tests are unfair to ALL vehicles. No one will be hit by a block of concrete on wheels going 40 mph. If this or any car was hit by another car, that vehicle would absorb 50% of the impact through its crumple zone. This Is not a reasonable way to test cars crashworthiness. If this Vic were hit by an actual car, damage would be far less.
unfortunately all cars are hit by the same concrete block on wheels. some perform good some perform poor. so just think its hit by a real car driven by a speed maniac with 90-100 mph. looks like the agent inside the car will be a dead agent. :P
right, but if you have a car that is built to proform well with these kinds of test, then you would have a very safe, very strong auto. domestics suck ass when it comes to body, engine, suspension, drivetrain, interiors, looks, resale value. everything else is alright
the cown victoria its a shit..!!!!

hellraiser3108 1 year ago
I do agree, the B pillar needs to be stronger, besides, the car's already a boat what's a hundred extra pounds of reinforcement? However when I hit an older one in the exact same way at 37mph, it didn't exhibit NEARLY the damage this video implies. It all boils down to where you hit a vehicle and how much force you hit it with.
yellowmusicfreak 1 year ago
@yellowmusicfreak test partitions don't have crush zones, which is why the impacts are always worse during the crash tests. Anyone can brag about a car that tests poorly in low speed impacts, but the fact is, these cars are involved in high speed, high energy collisions almost every day and the results turn out more favorable than this.
Shirehorse148 8 months ago
yeah, a lot of cars do quite bad really in the side impact, ex BMW and Audi got quite bad (for being BMW and Audi :P ) on the last test, only Saab and Volvo got top score overall. Convertible-test gave the same score

i dont get why they use a solid barrier its supposed to crush and thats just putting all the pressure on the car thats being hit.
MRBRAD9070 1 year ago 3
Most vehicles do quite poorly in the side impact. Usually you aren't parked if you get hit sideways, so a T-Bone impact is not quite as disastrous. The P71 (Police Interceptor) has steel beams through the doors, which the civillian (this video's) model does not.
jfcash84 1 year ago 3
Damn, and our police officers are driving those? Well, at least the front end collison testing did good lol
sgtdisturbed47 1 year ago
they made that thing where it would perfectly fit so that it would break more and the front of a truck or car is not solid concrete.

The reason for the side air bags being optional is probably because you would die with or without them.
26otherside 2 years ago

2011 Chevy Caprice ppv just type it in
tw1869 2 years ago
thanx. I gave it a look. Im not sure I like it. Any ideas at the construction type (body on frame or unibody?)
cbburtraw 2 years ago
@tw1869 its not the real caprice it's just a modified version of the camaro and the pontiac G8
KingofComputing 2 years ago
@cbburtraw I think it's a design thing. Since the Crown Vic is longer than most cars & the test crash cart is always the same dimensions & weight, the cart applies pressure over a smaller surface area. If this was a Small Yaris, that same pressure would be applied overa wider surface area as the Yaris is smaller & takes up more SA on the test carts front-end
IDK It's just my theory, tell me if its wrong
beatlespersun 1 year ago
@beatlespersun that's definitely true at least to some extent, but they should take that into consideration when designing them. I know they could be a lot better with some reinforcement on that B pillar. The main reason smaller cars do better is because they get hit in the front/rear fenders- past the doors. The smallest cars get hit in the wheels- thats the best place to take a side hit in terms of safety (not so much mechanically... lol)
cbburtraw 1 year ago
@cbburtraw & also consider the Crown Vic was designed over 35 yrs. ago. They might of changed the skin & exterior of the car, but it's been using the same old Panther frame all this time which sadly wasn't made for SUV's side-crashing them at the time :(
beatlespersun 1 year ago
hmm whats up with that guy saying that if its a v8 then they are not looking for speed lol the fastest car - SSC Ultimate Aero is a v8 and so is the Saleen S7 is the worlds third fastest car and is also a V8. lol he should have know what he was talking about before talking bad about a good car. And dang i hate to see the crown victoria get messed up like that.
sursidepride 2 years ago 3
I had a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis with the side airbags. What I'm seeing does make sense out of what I experienced with my 04. I went from driving a 90 to the 04 and noticed a ton of road noise.

PacificEdibleSeaweed 2 years ago
I have a 2003 ford crown victoria police interceptor and I'm an 18 year old mechanic and I like the looks of my car, the Grand Marquis does seem kinda plain in my opinion but they're well built cars nonetheless

Stonedbrownguy 2 years ago 3
These IIHS crash tests are unfair to ALL vehicles. No one will be hit by a block of concrete on wheels going 40 mph. If this or any car was hit by another car, that vehicle would absorb 50% of the impact through its crumple zone. This Is not a reasonable way to test cars crashworthiness. If this Vic were hit by an actual car, damage would be far less.
ajp9478 2 years ago 4
unfortunately all cars are hit by the same concrete block on wheels. some perform good some perform poor. so just think its hit by a real car driven by a speed maniac with 90-100 mph. looks like the agent inside the car will be a dead agent. :P
amokachi31 2 years ago
right, but if you have a car that is built to proform well with these kinds of test, then you would have a very safe, very strong auto. domestics suck ass when it comes to body, engine, suspension, drivetrain, interiors, looks, resale value. everything else is alright
bofeds 2 years ago
Well, vehicles could (and have and continue to) hit concrete sideways. Therefore this test is indeed very fair. At least to the consumers.
