2:13. To this day, there has never been an event close to being that loud, on that large a scale, ~300,000, with infield. You can hear McKay's voice "whiting out" on the broadcast. People these days have become jaded to artificial versions of events like the impossible final laps of 1982. More's the pity.
IMO, the 1982 finish was the best. 1989, 1992, and 2006 were great, but 1982 was the first time that two cars battled on the last lap of a 500 mile open-wheel race.
The reaction from the grandstands was just icing on that cake!
@FrodothePuppet Actually the 1937 race had a winning margin of barely 2 seconds, and supposedly the cars were side-by-side at some point on the last lap. Sadly there's no video of it, though...
@FrodothePuppet Nowadays, as mentioned in another post...people seem to think they're "entitled" to such finishes, every single race, as though it is entertainment, and not ENTERTAINING. Nothing dulls the edge of something special like total saturation with it.
My only problem with this is that 'footage' like the 1936 and 1939 material on Louis Meyer is faked, in a way. That's Lou Palmer doing the voice over. The real broadcast was on the Mutual Radio Network, which did 30 minute segments at the start and finish of the races, and as such MAY have caught either one, but not with that wording that was used.
I'm Very Mad because I cannot see any of the IndyCar races this year becuase it's on Versus which I don't have and the ABC races either, including the 500 becuase Dish no longer shows ABC, I WISH THEY WOULD SIMULCAST THE RACE ON ESPN FOR THE DISH NETWORK PEOPLE!!!!
The coolest thing in the whole world is that moment at 3:02 when the video fades into that front stretch view. Carl Fisher had the dream, but truly Indianapolis is the place that Tony Hulman built.
1982 Indy 500,
We were in turn 4,Infield
10 laps to go,We started timing it, 10 sec back.
9 laps to go, timed 9 sec back for Mears,
We new it was going to be down to the wire,
Right there an then.10 laps before it happened.
You could hardly hear the cars go by,With the crowd cheering so loud.
To see the 1982 Indy 500 program, put youtube in front of /watch?v=FOiFf5oC-IQ

18 more days until I go to Indianapolis for the Indy 500...Every year I have to endure the same, slow countdown of days, but it is SOOOOO worth it.

It is truly a human spectacle...a spectacle of speed. The quest for speed has unquestionable danger...it also has incomparable rewards. Fantastic!!

The Bad Part is that You Can't Upload the whole 2009 race for some reasons, so I can't see on YouTube or at home.

I'm thinking its about time to set my ringtone as Delta Force again to start looking forward to what is only about 8 weeks away...

to me, the delta force theme reminds me of how kick ass Chuck Norris is, and why nobody messes with him.
