this makes me think of driving down the interstate and there are no other cars around, just you. so you drive really slow and stare out the window at the empty road.
My god i have been writing french coursework for 3 hours and it has beaten me to a pulp, this song has cheered me up to the point i was smiling rocking from side to side and writing, much love for this guy and his eggs!
Last night after a peaceful and communal drug experience with close friends and the love of my life, I started to come down and drift to sleep as Sovay filled my ears (as if from nowhere) and took over. I pictured waves and all sorts of indescribable beauty. It was amazing, especially considering I've only heard this song a few times, unlike some of Mr. Bird's other tracks which have been played -millions- of times by me. After that experience, this is has become my favourite song of his by far.
When i was a kid my mother used to sing me a british folk song called "Sovay" about a girl who dressed up as a robber, and robbed her fiancee, to test his love he asked for his gold ring. Even under threat of death he would not relinquish it. Later she gave him back his possessions and told him that if he had given up the ring she would have killed him. the tag line was " Sovay Sovay , All on a day". That folk song inspired Andrew Bird as that line is in the song.
what exactly is 'sovay'? and while we're on the subject, don't you wish you could just ask mr. bird about what his songs are about? just sit down with a good cup of tea and pick his brain...i bet the answers would be what we least expect!
@fashionandmusic921 I did that when we took the train from London to Scotland for a school trip. It was several hours and the rain was just a drizzle, perfect time for andrew bird :)
@pops4beats I don't know if it's the same one that kagomessoul is talking about, but Celia Rees has written a book by the name of Sovay. It reads really well so far; you should check it out. :3
I'm pretty sure (but not certain) that the book by Celia Rees came out a few years after this song. However, Sovay may be referring to a folk tale about a woman who dresses as a man to test the love of men.
@kagomessoul Sovay was an old old folk song, from what I can remember (I think we looked at it in school), about a woman that dresses up as a highwayman and robs her suitor - he gives her everything he has but refuses to hand over the ring she (Savoy) gave him - a test of love, if you will...
I first heard this guy on National Public Radio in the US. It's an interview worth looking up at NPR org. His performance on that show captured me. This track, Sovay, was at the beginning of the album when I bought it. I just sat there in the parking lot, falling in love.
You would think with almost 1500 views that more than six people would have rated it or at least one would take the time to comment...

and i believe londonerforrock was referring to this song possibly being about ABOUT a scene in the film, not the song literally being in the film
simple misunderstanding :}

Andrew Bird's music makes me think of being on a train
looking out over the countryside just as it starts to rain. not trying to sound all deep and profound, it just does. I love it.
fashionandmusic921 2 years ago 70
don't worry, you've wholly avoided any profundity.

I never once thought of it like that but that definetly captures the mood of alot of his slower music perfectly
