It is such a mindblower to see these earnest and sweet people talking about things that ordinary Americans take for granted, except for the nationalized oil of course. But that is what Mossadegh attempted to do in 1953, and of course the US and UK put a stop to it and commenced 26 years of brutal oppression.
My support is from my heart and my prayers are with the Iranian people.
I was in Iran then. There was no brutal suppression. Nothing even close to what happened in the first year after this regime came to power. The Pahlavi Regime, even though not perfect, was fighting the Soviet Union trying to take over. That is what he wasfighting. At least then, we had personal freedoms and equality among all Iranians. The shah knew the country is weak, 82% of Iranians were illiterate, keep in mind the super powers were looking to create a conflict such as Iran- Iraq war & gain from it,hence wouldn't you have to suck up to them if you don't want one million Iranians to die, FYI, if you read the history you'll find out how he manged that. remember I'm not implying by any means his regime was totally democratic, OK?

Davos, the word "Allah" is not a proper name like Jesus or Jack or Jill. It is the word, not the name, used in Arabic for God, just like you say God. If you believe in God then you believe in Allah. In Farsi the word is Khoda, in French Dieux, in Spanish Dios. Do you get it? It is only in Christianity that people use a proper name to talk about God. In most other religions God is God.
in countries that dont believe greed surpasses compassion for the well being of other citizens, yes. The resources belong to the people, not just the people with money. Nationalized oil would bring money for every citizen to have free healthcare, education, etc
Alaska has such a scheme, where each citizen receives a dividend from the state's oil revenues. They live on the land, after all. Why should corporations be the only ones to profit from shared resources?
In NIgeria Shell has destroyed the land and way of life of the Ijaw people. They have polluted the land and water so they cannot fish or farm. They and their corrupt govt take all the money from the sale of the oil and don't use any of it for schools or hospitals or infrastructure. When they tried peaceful protest they hung the leaders of the movement. This is going on in Burma and other places as well.
It is true that great things can come from the money brought in by oil. But as a business owner I can imagine the incredible feeling of injustice as my company is made public property so to speak.
I am a business owner too:) I personally feel it would be better for the planet if we got away from using oil and used cleaner, renewable energy sources.
foxzen, the money you make from your business probably has a tangible benefit on the community you work in, as you employ people who live there and also spend to benefit other businesses in the area. It wouldn't be fair, though, if you were siphoning off shared resources and not reinvesting funds to help the people whose livelihood you were impacting. I think oil nationalization is fair when ordinary folks aren't getting any benefit out of a resource taken from their own land.
I pray that Iran finds truth and change in 2009. May Allah protect all the brave sisters, brothers, cousins, mothers, and fathers who fight for democracy.

Amazing. Keep it up Iran. You have been all over the American media and we know what you are admirably protesting for. You are not alone in this fight. In a Democracy the government should be afraid of its people and not the other way around. What you are doing is note worthy, righteous, and just. The election was a fraud and you deserve better.
