A couple of thoughts:

The knife used was a cheap plastic disposable one

It was already heavily coated with dried on medium and paint - this seems to work much better than a new knife so when it breaks I may put a few coats of medium on a new one before using it.

To get the texture which really makes this painting work I used more medium than I usually do and no water.
