  • It's odd that Cosell didn't note that Quarry was not using his right at all, not simply not using it with power or effectiveness. I'm not sure whether he broke that hand or not but it sure looked like it; he was resting his right hand completely by the last two rounds eve when there were obvious openings or chances to use it. Dundee must have been right. Great first round w/o a doubt but the later rounds became one-sided in F's favor.

  • QUARRY,no body to body with JOE FRAZIER !!

  • Someone said "why was this fight of the year"... well for one thing the ring (and everyone) is biased towards the marquee division, ie a good hw fightll get it over a great mw fight, but round 1 was also named one of the 25 best rounds (and I believe it was top 10) of all time...

  • Did you just say smoking joe frazier was not great? Hahaha, ellis, quarry, and bonavena would all be dominant today... and yr acting like winning the fight of the century doesn't count cos he lost the snoozefest and the thrilla in manilla? Funny. Too funny... he may not be sam langford, ali, louis, or tyson, but I rate frazier ahead of holmes, lewis, hgh holyfield, and even foreman (my thing, is who did foreman beat? Joe frazier. And that's cos joes style was taylor made for big george...)

  • @RapedByRepublicans it was indeed tailor made for Foreman. And Quarry shows that he was poor at avoiding punches. Just came straight in, didnt even try to duck the punches. Only knocked off his feet once, by Chuvalo. His style unfortunately led to his having dementia in his later ytrs, b4 he passed. RIP Jerry and Joe---this was named Fight of the Year.

  • Of all the white fighters since i was born in 1959 Quarry is my favorite better than Gerry Cooney and Tommy Morrison by far. Very unfortunate to fight in the hey day of heavyweighs t with frazier ali and foreman. Might have won a championship during the talentless Larry Holmes era.

  • Quarry a mediocre fighter at best. Not talented enough to reach the top. Frazier a one-armed fighter who looked netter than he was against such untalented opposition. Frazier avoided the heavy punchers as much as he could. Thank God for him there was a light-punching Ali around to make Joe rich.

  • @jurdoc11 lol you again, your a pussy and didnt respond to my other comment. lol mediocre fighter at best he beat shavers and foster and other top contenders. a one armed fighter did you even watch the video he throws from both sides. i guess fighting foreman twice means he avoided him. liston didnt beat a ranked fighter in five years come fraziers era, lyle got his ass beat by quarry,so did foster and shavers. williams had fucking bullet holes in his body and was shit by that point

  • @jurdoc11 your a fucking cunt,RESPOND

  • @jurdoc11 That's a little harsh. Quarry had a lot of ability, but he just didn't have a punch, and he cut. Not a great fighter, but more than a mediocre fighter.

Frazier is overrated, for sure. Who did he beat? He beat Ali the first fight, or so he got the decision, only to lose two others. Ellis wasn't great, Quarry wasn't great. He got knocked down badly by Bonavena. He got ass-raped by Foreman.

Still, he was a very good fighter, just not a "great".

  • Frazier not even tripping at the end look... like "shit this how a man EAT"

That's true at heart superb fighter.

  • Joe Frazier stood 5 ft. 10 and weighed 210 when he beat Ali. In this era where

modern heavyweights stand 6ft. 6 and clock in at 260lbs. I would bet you that all of those guys thank God everyday that they don't have to look into the other corner to

    see Joe Frazier standing there.

  • @stlrockn they would certainly have to fcking EARN their paychecks. not david haye bullshit. JOE FRAZIER would give any man in boxing today absolute hell. win or lose, he'd end their careers

  • @danhantheman Foreman was strong but not very skilled, or fast, and he blasted out Fraizer twice. I just dont see a small boxer end the Klitschkos career. All athletes develops you know. Jesse Owens was a great runner, his winning time in OL in Berlin 1936 was 10,3 sec, Usain Bolts worlds record is 9,58 sec.

  • @danhantheman A True Champion, the One and Only, Self Made, Smokin' Joe Frazier! In my opinion better than Ali and he proved he was! Because he didn't beat Foreman? I don't believe Ali did either, that fight when Foreman hit the canvas in the 8th was a hoax if only the Ref. had let him go on Ali would have lost.

  • @miguelhtp1966 bullshit lol. ali was playing 'rope a dope' hello? foreman was way too slow, and ali was toying with him. you dont know shit about boxing lol. if foreman got up, ali would've sent him right back down and again and again lol. and i dont even LIKE ali, he's a prick but ali outsmarted foreman, end of story.

  • @AntiFeminaziMale Lol, are you kidding me? Ali had no choice but to cover up and play rope a dope because if Foreman had connected once or twice that would hve been the end. And Ali was also exhausted he was 7 yrs older than Foreman. It's true, I grant u that Ali was the smartest man in boxing, but not the greatest or the best by far. He was smart, tactical and very lucky against Foreman...but nobody wants to question his merit, do they?

  • Joe was a good boxer.

  • Ahhhh, the 1960's video quality.

  • quarry walking around after the fight was stopped like he had a shot-his legs were gone- he did'nt move- frazier was getting in rythm and quarry faded- see next fight -quarry does a no mas.

  • jerry quarry is one mean warrior

  • I met Jerry Quarry back in the 1980's while at a bar and there was some footage of Muhammad Ali on the T.V. set and the subject of Ali's opponents came up and Jerry's name came up and one of the guys I was sitting next to said that Quarry was a bum and Jerry heard him. I asked him if he would recognize him if he saw him and the guy said, "I would know that bum anywhere." The guy shut up real fast when he saw Jerry there. Jerry just shrugged his shoulders, as if to say, whatever.

  • why was this fight of the year?

  • @primeboxers Good question. It's a good fight, but not a great fight. Quarry's not really competitive after round 3.

Maybe 1969 was a slow year for the sport....

  • @primeboxers i agree i see Quarry missing and Frazier landing ,one sided fight

  • you don't call a guy that knocked out Ernie Shavers in the first round a crybaby...

  • @fievel3782 shavers was a bum!!!

  • @primeboxers cmon man leave shavers out of this he was an ok boxer

  • I saw some clear elbow shots, too. Joe was ridin' dirty :)

  • @bonguskongus Sounds like excuses to me. frazier was landing left hooks/body punches and was not known as a dirty fighter. frazier was better than quarry and he beat him twice handily. nothing else to be said

  • Would have been an even more spectacular fight if Quarry hadn't injured his hand. Just shows what a rock the man was, to be fighting a rampant Joe Frazier for what must have been four rounds one-handed. And then only the cut stopped him. He protested in similar fashion when Ali stopped him on cuts the next year. Yet I remember the elder Klitschko, the "good" one, pulling out of a fight immediately on discovering he had a hand/arm injury. Times have certainly changed.

  • This era of boxing has never been matched by today's standards

  • Frazier was terific body puncher!Because of body punches Quarry was run out of gas.

  • when will we see a heavy weigh fight as good as this with todays heavy weight fighters?

  • @isecede not in our life times apparently

  • Jerry Q was the Washington Generals of boxing

  • @JacksonPerdue Um, what the hell does that mean?

  • @JacksonPerdue Jerry Quarry was a three time number one heavyweight contender and he was in the top ten for about eight years. He had wins over former champion Floyd Patterson and contenders such as Ron Lyle, Earnie Shavers, and Buster Mathis. His career record of 53 wins 9 losses and 4 draws was respectable and Quarry had a way of ruining good propsects. Mac Foster 24-0, all by knockout going in, was never the same after Quarry and Thad Spencer, who had beaten Ernie Terell wasn't either.

  • You could have left in the rest of the post fight interview. Frazier is pretty prime here.

  • i think i'ma retire right now. joe is the coolest boxer in history, well... i mean sugar ray was like cab calloway, miles davis cool, but joe's a fucking pimp. still to this day

  • @RapedByRepublicans He talks like a pimp too. He's the shizzz

  • is it just me or is joe throwin that elbow in there pretty consitently?

  • Yeah, Jerry is crying at the end. I mean, this was for the HW Championship. The guy lost...he's allowed to get emotional about it. But yeah, impressive fight by both guys for sure. Frazier is an absolute beast.

  • Crying or not, would you call him a crybaby if you saw him on the street? Of course he's no longer with us.

  • Quarry could punch and Joe walked through him. Impressive display of a chin and heart by both guys. Joe was unreal in the way he coud take a punch.

  • joe's left hook<3

  • is Quarry crying? and a very dominant display by Smokin Joe lefts hooks and excellent swarming.

  • yea he is the annoucer around 3:35 the annoucer says hes crying bitterly

  • 2:35
