In retrospect, I've never seen it that bad in Portugal with its abundance of level crossings and boards across the tracks/low platforms......But with third rail electrification that's not an option.
i remember when i was a little kid about 5 my mum said i was not allowed to go over the bridge so i stopped and the gates came down. but luckily they came back up and i ran to my mum.
You see people stopping for a chat on the tracks. I was there last week and two lads did a limbo dance under the barriers as they were closing.

We have third rail on the Southern region but they just put a gap in the rails for crossings.
