This robot is my favorirte because it actually has function associated with it. You look at asimo and other "high level" robots they dont have the characteristics like this machine does. PR2 = top of the line.

sorry luisbeck007 thats was an incorrect statement. The human brain does 100 trillion calculations per sec. Laptop processors by that time will only cycle the most 8-10 ghz (8-10 billions calculations due to overheating issues). It would be more like year 2040-50 we will see a supercomputer with human like cognition.

The laser is decently safe -- the much bigger problem is that it is just too slow to do the up/down scan. Fast/accurate depth mapping will be an enabler for robotics. We are working on using stereo with projected light. Many other methods are possible with many other tradeoffs -- how much light you can put out vs/power use and eye safety, the sensitivity of the sensor etc. Not easy ... but that's what makes it fun.

This looks like excellent work! I remain skeptical though about the use of scanning laser rangefinders for mapping within domestic environments. Would these pass safety regulations for people and also for pets?
