A small children's bouncy rubber ball on a BBQ stick. Yes it is a 34 inch PAISTE symphonic gong that I selected from the PAISTE factory back in 1974. Very interesting sorting through 30-40 34 inch symphony gongs. This was ONE that had the sound I was after.
I don't have any more footage but I can contact the person who filmed it to see whether they still possess more footage. If so, I'll look at it and consider posting it. The only problem is the 10 minute cut-off limit imposed by youtube - which could mean plaxcing it in sections.
HI. Well, actually, I am playing a Sun Gong and Platonic Year Gong. I DO own an Earth Gong #3 but not from the Planet Gongs series. I became an endorsee of PAISTE in 1973 and I do own some rare stuff from them.
Hi. I only said Earth gong because that Platonic Year gong has the Earth symbol on it. Whenever I see one up for sale, it always says something like "Paiste Planet gong: Earth Platonic Year gong". I thought it was an unusual size, because the three Planet Earth gongs I see are all in different sizes, that's all.
Hi - oh, well, it is only planet Earth after all. To be honest that is the original symbol for the planet Mars! The symbol for earth is the cross within the circle. There may also be some confusion because PAISTE also made another gong called an Earth gong as part of an earlier series and this was 26" diameter followed by another at 32" then an other at 38" and then one at 60" - I'd love to have afforded that one! If my memory serves me well, the Planet Earth gong is around 38" diameter.

Hello again! I notice that you play these gongs with a ball mallet at times. Is it a rubber ball, or is it made of something else?

Hi. Yes these are rubber balls - children's bouncy balls.

Frank,
What kind of small rubber mallet do you use on the gong to create the unusual sound?
Is the symphonic a 34 inch? Enjoyed it.
Blessings,
Gordon from Texas

This really goes more in depth into the gongs' true sounds. Do you have any more footage of the concert?

Thank you, that would be great!
That Earth gong there is an old one. I don't think that Paiste makes one in that size in present time.
