Great video. I was a member of the NYCDCC, Carpenters. Unions need to educate their members better as to the importance of unionised labor as well as effective organising. Union YES!
I have a question. If Unions are so great then why is it that the free to work states enjoy a job growth at a rate of %17.6 while the ones that are not right to work are at %8.9? And I know someone that used to work for GM. A co-worker of his would come into work set his lunch box down and fall asleep. The reason why was that he was constantly getting drunk. This friend of mine did not want to witness any accident so he left. Is that the kind of job security that the Unions talk about?
enforce labor laws and safety laws that are in place already-its a bit ridiculous to get a 10.00job unionized, this is why jobs are going to china ....only ones that would disagree are the ones collecting the dues
some states cant handle union/nonunion issues-do research on MN especialy late 1980s hormel strike videos-still to this day union people going around shooting theirmouth off to people who dont even work, destroying peoples lives that arent even involved...why do you think we have all these cases of food contamination recalls throughout the country-some are union extremists...its was great what was started but there are laws that protect people the same for free-
unions technically arent needed anymore-states shouls be enforcing the labor laws which gives all workers the same rights-no one should have to pay dues/money to anyone towork...
Our current labor laws are quite insufficient - for instance: 1) min wage is not pegged to inflation which means that it's highest real dollar level was in 1968 at $9.25 (using 2007 dollars); now it has fallen a full $2.00/hour to about $7.00 real $. 2) Unlike 190 other countries, the US does not enforce ANY paid (or UNPAID) sick or mat. leave, vac. or holiday time - there's only the 40 hour protection. 3) No required health coverage for workers 4) Existing laws make unionization very difficult.
I am a member of Teamsters local 769 south Fl. Unions do not produce miracles however my working conditions and job security is protected by the local. I would encourage anyone to vote yes when a union comes to the job site.
Excellent, should be shown in schools and at PTA meetings. This generation has no idea of the struggles, unless we tell or show them. Thanks for presenting this video.
I am always searching for historic information on labour movement and especially in the building trade.
I now work for the union with education so any knowledge of our origins and the struggle for workers rights in the past also helps me in explaning to people why we still struggle today.

Funny, I didn't see the Marxist or racist aspects of the beginnings of the labor unions.
