  • HIGHLY respected by her contemporaries, colleagues and critical audiences.Taste has altered, musical standards lowered in this generation, who ,if professional and serious, would do well to study former stars who have made it into history through excellence .Take from them what made them great and leave behind that part that is now just out of fashion.Know the difference.

  • Renata.....

    Unica, magnifica!

  • WHAT IS THAT ON HER HEAD??...AN OSTRICH?? SHE LOOKS LIKE CARMEN MIRANDA...AND THE INTERPRETATION AND SINGING, WELL., MEDIOCRE AS USUAL !!!

  • @simisimi9 : Chileno hijo de puta y analfabeto. Your mother works in a whorehouse

  • Maravillosa, quién diga otra cosa, conoce poco.

  • @ad2447 AVERAGE...NOT AT ALL WONDERFUL !!!

  • @simisimi9 I totally agree with you ...just average....I would say mediocre...not even the costume is good...she looks like having got a fight with a peacock !!!! and why in the high notes she looses her neck??...ridiculous!!!

  • SHE LOOKS RIDICULOUS WITH THAT DRESS...BESIDES..SHE DOES NOT SING WELL...DO NOT KNOW WHY SO MUCH BLA, BLA, BLA ABOUT HER....SHE WAS JUST A SINGER AMONG A LOT BETTER THAN HER

  • Wow what a lovely version of this aria! Tebaldi had the richest creamiest sound. Angelic singing and all the drama and emotion is there too. This is an impressive and accomplished singer! Brava Renata!

  • As far as I'm concerned, Tebaldi IS Adriana.

  • MAGIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love this Opera...esp. the fourth act, pure beautiful music, unabashedly romantic. i'm frankly tired of puccini, verdi, wagner and strauss dominating the opera houses...we need more verismo, more giordano, more cilea, mascagni, leoncavallo and moussorgsky

  • @dalecampbl9 I totally agree with you! Thanks for letting me know there are others on the same page

  • The pure womanly sound.

  • what a marvel!so much inner sunstence!

  • Not the Poveri fiori, which doesn't seem to be on YT, but the other aria of Adriana.

  • as a kid i was blessed to see Tebaldi and Corelli in this great staged work as part of the Met tour of 1968. I was awed by the whole experience, and there could never be another Adriana for me.

  • Comment removed

  • Incredibly beautiful rendition of a signature aria. The costume and set is unfortunate, but this is the Bell Telephone Hour, always weirdness when it came to opera. That voice, however, pure gold. I'd have killed to have seen and heard Tebaldi live, just once in any of her signature rols, Desdemona, Forza Leonora, Mimi. Toscanini was right on the money

  • my voice teacher took lessons from Tebaldi and recommended I listen to this video to get an idea of how to sing this piece for my recital. This is truly a masterpiece, and I hope I can do her proud. =D

  • The BEST Adriana ever!

  • the best adriana ever.

  • sei magica!

  • Could they PLEASE pick a costume that made her look bigger?

  • does anyone have an english translation to this aria?

  • I think Renata has a great, beautiful, wonderful voice and is unmatched in some

operas( La Forza del Destino, v.g.).

In "La Mamma Morta", I allways choose to hear Maria Callas.Isolde for me, IS Kirsten Flagstad.

And so on, and so on...

  • I know those recordings. She is technically perfect, indeed, but what the perfection means? For me she don't reaches the intensity of the other singer in la mamma morta, and I don't want to prononce that name once again... But of course TEbaldi is one of the greatest. ANd of course I don't now what singing is, you are the only one who nows. Well that's so cool!

  • One of the most beautiful aria ever composed for the voice. If only the divine Tebaldi could have held the final note longer, it would have been perfect. I adore her but I long for just a tiny bit more breath control...who am I to judge with not vocal talent though. The music is all that counts!

  • What is a longer note when your hear such a gorgeous voice. Nobody has that kind of voice today.

  • Another Milanov anecdote tells when Milanov sang her last Andrea Chenier performance she ordered to bring from europe the original dress Marie Antoniete wore. After the perf the critics told that the dress was too new for Milanov voice

  • I am not even a Zinka fan, and I am offended by these ridiculous stories. I was a child in her last Chenier at the Met--she wore the standard Maddalena dress. She never was cast as Butterfly--she would NEVER have had the sense of humor to call herself "ottanta" (not "ottanti") and where is this fictitious opera house where she was fired from Butterfly? I criticize Zinka a lot, but really!

  • Bravo suncollection!

Another story saysMilanov biggest dream was to play Butterfly, the story says she reached to the rehearsal and after "quanto anni avete...indovinate..." she was heard to say "ottanti (eighty) netti netti" and she was fired from the production

  • Does it really matter, which one was better? It's a matter of taste and what they are singing. Tebaldi has more metal. Freni's sound is more lirique, but to some it might seem warmer.

In any case they both sing with so much sense of stile and the voices have so much character that they just need to sing one note and you know it's them. No one sings like this anymore. They just want to sound dark and scream the high notes, no one works on the middle any more. I find it to be very sad!!!

  • cannot be compared, different registers.Freni is a lyric , Tebaldi is a lyrical-spinto with a size of dramatic proportions

  • Only the most beautiful middle register sound ever produced, Conventional? Name me a soprano who in their entire career produced a sound as warm and heartfelt as "un soffio e la mia voce?" Answer: nobody.

  • Before to speak you must lear a bit about voices and singing meanwhile you must remain silent

  • Tebaldi,one and unique!

  • MERAVIGLIOSA, BRAVA RENATA

  • Show me another soprano who has beautiful and huge high notes like Tebaldi.

What are you saying ? Better not to speak of other sopranos high notes because no other soprano had those unbeleivable beautiful and perfect A, Bflat and B and also C like Tebaldi

  • You must have some earing problems?

  • Only conventional.

  • Turning verismo into bel canto is some kind of vocal feat. I've compared this performance phrase by phrase with several other notable renditions, and no one quite approaches this finesse and opulence.

  • flawless.

    Perfect "Io son l'umile ancella"

  • Couldn't you think of anything else to say? You obviously said all of that to make some people angry. I have to disagree with one thing. She wasn't ugly.

  • Feedeth not the trolls. Besides, what if something DID happen to the guy(??) and you had made threats whether you had anything to do with it or not??

  • Trivia quiz time. In 1968, a revival of Adriana Lecouvreur was staged at the Met for Mme. Tebaldi alongside Franco Corelli. On the day of one performance, Mr. Corelli advised he was not i voice and could not go that evening. Who replaced Mr. Corelli for that performance??

  • Placido Domingo debuted at the Met on september 1968 as Maurizio.Tebaldi and Corelli had opened the '68/'69 Met season a few days before

  • You are correct! Placido Domingo was alrady scheduled to make his Met debut as Murizio at a later date, but Mr. Corelli's indisposal pushed it up. After getting the phone call, Domingo hastily made his way through traffic arriving at the theatre just in time to get into costume/makeup and to get a short warmup.

  • Trivia quiz time. When opening night performance ended, Mr Bing knocked Miss Tebaldi dressing-room and said : "Renata, here is an old friend who wants to greet you" Tebaldi answered from inside: "Is Zinka Milanov ?" Bing did not answer, Miss Tebaldi said from her dressing -room "It's ......".

    What Miss Tebaldi said ?

  • It was Maria Callas coming to congratulate Mme. Tebaldi on a job well done and effectively ending their well-publicized "rivalry." From that point on, Mme. Callas never had anything but kind words to say about her former "rival."

  • Just on those weeks of the fall of 1968 Onassis got married with Jackie Kennedy and Callas fly from Paris to America, She did not want to face the fact Onassis had dropped her till the point one day she arrived to the Cristina yatch and Onassis have ordered not to let her come in the Cristina

  • Callas not even was allowed to retire her jewels from the Cristina and she had to borrow the diamonds for the opening night to a New York jewelry

  • She should have just marched into the Cristina and given Onassis hell....

  • It was a tough time in Callas life that she never recovered

  • Trivia quiz time 2:"I read those stories about her flattulence on stage to the

distress of her other colleagues, particularly members of the chorus who

could not move away. At least, her tenor or baritone could depart to

the opposite side of the stage. I always wondered what it was that she

ate, prior to performance, that caused this problem"

Who was the soprano the Met chorus complained about this unpleasant situation ?I give a help, she was always OLD and she died in the '80s

  • Gee, get a life!!!!

And a good psychiatrist, it's becoming urgent.

  • She has more talent in her little finger than you have in your entire uneducated body.

If you had spent a tenth of the time learning to express yourself then Renata did learning her craft you would be a more relevant human being!

  • lord that costume is hideous but her singing is flawless! I love her and her barney costume too!

  • Friends, be sensible. This was for TV. Do you think she brought her own costumes? People who sang opera on TV had to wear whatever the program provided for them, hence some ridiculous Turandot costumes that Nilsson had to wear. I saw Tebaldi as Adriana12 times, and she never wore this costume. But I am sure it wasn't her own choice.

  • don't take it so hard jees, After all she probably felt the same way. this is you tube not a blood sport.

  • Who was taking it so hard? But people are FAR more malicious on youtube than they are almost anywhere else. They say crazy things in order to try to discredit people, such as a Tebaldi or a Milanov, even when what they say makes no sense or is a blatant lie. Very easy to do with screennames to hide behind. If you condone this kind of behavior, well, I pity you.

  • Ah, but opera IS blood sport!!!!!!! N'est-ce pas?

  • ha ha ha! so true :-)

  • "Saprgi d'amaro"... is this a new version? Talking of flaws...

  • I adore her as Adriana. My favorite in the role, right up there with the divine Magda Olivero.

  • I whish to those young singers to sing "so badly" as Callas and Tebaldi and have a glorious career like this both artists. You are "hard"...Good luck!!!! Up to you to enter in the vocal history!

  • Tebaldi here gives one commendable rendition, after all it's one of her best roles. The less said about the costume, the better.

  • youtube is a site not only for fans but for everybody. If you can understant the meaning of an open discussion you have my answer, if you can't understant my anwer you are completly fool. Obviously you are nobody so you can just not reply.

  • she looks ridiculous ..why they have to dress this poor woman like that??

  • Performances like this one in here, is what keep young

    generations away from opera.

  • obviously you have nothing to do with vocalism, not to say with opera at all...i wan't reach your level because it's to low, sorry!

  • The greatest Adriana - great singing, the voice is very warm and rich. Great diction. Grand Tebaldi.

  • i agree with laeliapurpurata, barely accetable. The breaths that takes can do no other but help her sing, there is no technic, she is looking for the easy way to sing

  • A wonderful Adriana...! and I'm a Callas fan.

  • Obviously you don't like Tebaldi - so why don't you get out of here and leave her fans alone?

  • gspichiuni, she is dressed as a character she is about to portray on stage. A play within a play scene. She is dressed as the character she is about to portray as she reflects on her art as an actress.

  • What beautiful tone! (Pardon the comparison) I find Callas's vocal colour choice in this aria is more interesting and her interpretation a bit calmer (and I do prefer Callas's), but Tebaldi's tone is legendary... particularly, the evenness in the low-mid register.

  • I saw Tebaldi and Corelli in this opera at the

Met Opera in the early 1960s. They will always be

my two favorite singers. I saw both of them in

other productions at the Met and their singing always

thrilled me. I also was very fond of Lucine Amara

who never became an international star but had a

very sweet quality to her voice and was a major fill

in at the Met for many years.

  • Renata Scotto said in her book - there was opera before and after Callas. gsperister you are a dumbbell and you have no class - go throw yourself from a bridge and that will make everybody happy.

  • gsperister - you are an asshole - narrow minded, stupid - did you ever look at yoursefl in the mirror, if you do you will see somebody very stupid, and idiot.

  • Tebaldi is a great Adriana - it is her signature role.

It suits her voice perfectly - sound is gorgeous.

The voice is so warm and rich.
