Could you please change the title to "Ignition lock cylinder"? People search "ignition switch" to view ignition switches, not cylinders. There is a difference. Thx. (Mechanic. 35yrs.)
I have a 1998 Jetta GL with a faulty ignition switch. I ran into a problem when I got to the lock cylinder. It just refuses to come off on it's on. Is there a special way that it comes apart? That I'm overlooking.
i have a 2001 for dranger, and I'm swapping wheels for a cruise control and tilt steering ranger wheel, The problem i have is that i need to change my original switch over to the other wheel; otherwise my key does not work, question? is it easy to changer the ignition switch? is it the same as this video? thanks
Urgh.....thougth I was gonna get some info here.....that's just the cylinder lock, not the switch. I got my cylinder lock out without removing the steering wheel.
Frankie4904 is correct, there is no need to remove the steering wheel. I have replaced many Ford ignitions via Locksmithing, and you can simply remove the plastic shroud, push in the retaining pin after picking, or turning the the lock 1/4 way forward. I'll neve forget teh poor guy that called me to fix his ford igntion in his car-after he had all of the steering apart, and most of the dash-poor dude.
that is the lock cylinder that actuates the ignition switch. the ignition "switch" is located further down the coulum on the left side. It isheld to the coulum with "tamper proof" torx screws. I had to go buy the special socket to do it on my ranger thats how I know.
I had to do this on both of my '94 Rangers, great little trucks that just kept going... until wrecked. Now I need to do this on my brothers '98 GMC Sierra... :-(
Thank you for posting this. All of the guides that I had checked kept saying that there was an access hole in the bottom of the column... Thank you again!
Good video but if you remove the plastic cover around the column and take a short piece of a wire clothes hanger, you can insert it into the release with out removing the steering wheel.
i have a friend that i broke his key off into his ignition on his 94 ford ranger by accident. if i get the ignition out would i be able to get the key out and do these instructions work for manual transmissions also? thanks
Nice tutorial. i have a Ford Thunderbird and I spent all Sunday replacing my igniition cylinder. Reasonf or replacing it was b/c very loose and car won't cran when I try to turn it on. So I replace it and I am getting the same thing. Car won't crank and its as if the car is on acc when there is not key in it. What am I doing wrong?
Figured it out. My T-Bird has a plastic rod in the middle of the column that ends up hitting the ignition switch. Well that plastic rod is broken. I'm told they don't sell that and if they did it would be a pain in the ass to replace. Might just end up changing the steering wheel.
i figured my problem out this moring, something happened to the ignition switch, the plastic parts of it was knocked loose of the metal part, and a connection was broken, i got a whole new lock/key setup, switch, soleniod, and coil, should be alive again soon
The tool around 1:44 is a torx screwdirver. I was wondering the same thing and then I remember we had a set from Craftsman and just looked at the name. 2:46 Success! lol. I'm thinking of throwing some toggle switches on my White Outdoor, I think the igniton switch went. PB Blaster is the shit and sweet songs! Later
i had the sorta the same problem. but it wasnt the ignition switch it was a pice in the colum that broke that holds this metal rod that goes to the ignition switch at the bottom of the steering colum and there a bitch. we had it tore apart to fix just the key switch when it was really broke in the colum >=[. ended up puttin it back together and took it to the shop. and i have a 90 F150 xlt lariat. i seen ur vid when u hit the barn 2
ha ha lol now youll need 2 keys one to open the door one to start the engine! ah dont worry my freind had an ancient VW with a different key for each door trunk and engine lol!

I wish I could have heard your commentary rather than the music, would have been more informative. This gave me a general idea though, thanks

I've replaced about 5 of those things but i realized that if you just put a little oil inside the lock every now and then they wont tear up on you.
