I don't think he had an idea his character quite yet. Auditions are usually rocky or "rough around the edges" because you don't get the entire feel of the character until the read through of the script.

Hee seems like hes closer to the cartoon depictions of tony stark than to the stark he made himself in the actual films, which is good either way.
