Pretty much the whole movie's point is to show how television pretty much runs peoples lives and how so many people are insanely attached to it. It also touches on how screwed up a mind could get from an overdose of TV (i.e. Jim Carrey's role). All it takes is a murder and a trial on tv to get a bunch of families (like the one at 2:17) to never leave the front of the tv. Thats why they had the Sam and Stan Sweet story in the movie. Something to aid the point.
