How much fuel gets transeferred on a plane like that on average it din't take long.Do the gunships take on fuel like that to save on landing and takeoff cycles?
I was deployed flying the C-17. The KC-135 Air National Guard Unit was also deployed supporting OIF. Since the KC-135 guys worked in the same building as us, I just walked over and asked if I could take a ride and see what it was like from the other side.
This is the job I wanted in the Air Force. Instead, I followed a friend's advice and at the last minute went with Ground Radio Repair. Stupid choice! GRR sucked, and this looks like way more fun.
You first need a college degree. Most pilots attend the Air Force Academy or ROTC in college. During this time, you compete for a pilot slot. After graduation, you will attend Pilot Training which is a year long. During that time, you compete to see who gets which aircraft. If you get the C-17, you then spend 4 months learning how to fly it. Another option is to visit a guard/reserve unit if you already have a college degree & see if they will send you to pilot training.
turbulence is very dangerous but when it looks like its rite over the window its about 20-30 feet so it wont make contact unless the operator isnt paying attention
haider5555 This may be Technology at it's best. But, it would not be anything without the dedication of the operator and their service. Thanks to ALL aand God Bless
The best and baddest transport in the world... the rest China, Russia, Europe can wish with envy they had it or could even produce something close to it (of course, with the exception of those nations who have bought the C-17).
Not quite. It is rare that we need more than 80-100 thousand lbs of fuel. I am not sure exactly how much the 135 holds but they tend to have plenty to get home without any problem.
what about the depth perception test Im tryin for aerial gunner and was wondering how hard the depth test is and how much info they cram in your brain during tech was basic hard alot of running tryin to get ready
running isnt that bad during basic, theyre arent to many ariel gunners cause when they find out what they realy do they tend 2 quit but they do cram yu with alot of stuff nd basic has nothing to do with it
We have limits on the amount of turbulence we can fly in while refueling. The more experience you have, the more turbulence you might be willing to take on. At night in turbulence, most guys will hang back until it subsides. If it doesn't, then we fly to an alternate to refuel on the ground. During all air refuelings, the boom is actually "flown" by the boom operator. He/she helps to ensure it doesn't make contact with our front windows.
brownshorts, if you're allowed to say, was this during a deployment to Turkey?
We always loved to refuel the C-17s because we knew that the mission would always go.
When C-5s were scheduled to be the receivers it would start out with the mission slipping 2 hours, then it would slip 4 hours, before you knew it the mission would be scrubbed because the C-5 was sitting on Ramstein's ramp broke for one reason or another.
I never got his name. Nice guy though. I am a C-17 pilot that was able to fly with the KC-135 to see air refueling from their point of view. Very different seeing it from the tanker.
that awesome man! i'm use to seeing it from the other side. i got some videos on here from our side of the connection looking at you guys. we've done that black sea line many times. thanks for the gas dude.....charleston load out

c-17...one plane where a good pilot makes A/R moderately challenging, to a bad pilot making it just a downright PITA

Must have been a long flight. The C-17 pictured is an extended-range bird. They can hold 249,000 pounds of fuel on their own.
