es 175 kicks ass ive played the epiphone model before and even that has great tone and i hate these jazz players saying u cant rock with an 175 i say just look at steve howe he shuts them up and i like his telecaster as well its different to other customs ive seen
I like the jazz bass generally, but did not like Squire's EQ on this album. It felt like the "crunch" had disappeared from out of the rhythm section. There were other things that compensated for it though. Primarily the quality writing and arranging. and of course Howe and Wakeman's overall performance.
Wow, what an amazing insight into one of my fav Yes songs...I guess Jon was 'double-tracking' his vocals ...done the hard-way..ie..without a computer!!
I was 9 years old when my older sister, 20 years my senior, was jamming to Going For The One in '77..... first time I remember hearing Yes. Next summer in '78, I snapped a photo of Rick Wakemen, 2 rows behind me, at the Philadelphia Fury's first ever soccer game in the NASL. Still have the photo in one of my photo albums... Rick was one of the investors in that 'rock' soccer team.....
Man..........Yes behind the scenes. This is fascinating. Back in the day, we always wondered how they did what they did in the studio. Nice job on the acquisition and posting of this video.
Amazing to see the ease with which Chris creates those gorgeous backup vocals in the last seconds of this video. Interesting to see him in action on the rehearsals for the title track as well...
on the current tour, Chris brings out each bass that he used to record each song. Generally it's the Rick, however I believe the white one is a gibson, the yellow one a fender jazz, he also plays this awesome custom black rick which appears to have fish scales on it.
Chris never got the credit he deserved, not only for his bass playing, which wasn't as visible as Steve's guitar or Rick's keyboards, but also for filling out the vocals -- it's amazing how thin Jon sounds without him.
I agree, in addition to being a great bass player, Chris has a very good voice, very high and clear, you can note it in Can you Imagine from the abum Magnification
I've always thought it was interesting that Steve is playing The Les Paul on this video footage. From what I gather, on the finished track, he used a Strat. Apparently when they've played the song onstage, he's always used a Strat on it.
a hard combination to beat, alan white and chris squire are a formidable rythym section here, powerful, driving, innovative music....big thing for me will we ever see them tour the uk again??
i cant stop either! HELP! When they recorded the final take Wakeman was playing 100 odd miles down the road, on an organ in a church - the sound was sent down the telephone to the rest of the band!
Hi yesman....omg I cant get off your site ...Its driving me wild ....I love all that you post ....more more more please ....thanks from the heart .....jersey girl love 's ya !!! lol
"to be an ever opening flower" to perpetually expand. Not a song about mathematics, but a lot of terms associated with geometry: 'parallel', 'dimensions', 'space'. The terms aren't used in a context, rather, I think, because they song sophisticated. Another word that is used, especially in Squire's songs, is "happen". Just an observation...
Anderson's quick pitch fluxuation is like a sonic roller coaster! This vocal take is way better than the released one, which is more conservative and too reigned in. I'd have let Jon get way out there, like this. His pushing his voice here just makes my stomach queasy, riding his unique rapid climbs and plunges at the end of "heart" and "spaces". Who else would ever think of singing like that?! Fucking SPECTACULAR! "To be an ever opening flower"? Killer image! No angry Metal heads allowed!
When Anderson comes in for his vocal overdubs at 3:53-8:02, it's freaking spectacular. This guy is so angelically creative, those vocals are on a level no other male could ever hope to equal. God, euphoric goosebumps that God could bestow a person with such an otherworldly tone capable of emitting an individual's personal feelings and thoughts. The way Anderson uses it so well with such joyfully emotive, rolling, and rollicking phrasing on this take that blows away the album version! Perfection!
i was in a metal band that had probably more changes certainly more time signature variations. our problem was this; it was all unlistenable crap.
it's miraculous though, that when all you have to do is sit around and smoke pot and play music, the sort of musical hedge-maze one can commit to memory backwards and forwards.
(as for the pot smoking, i speak not for YES, but for the crappy metal band i was in in the 90's).
This friggin blows me away. Real time overdubbs in the studio. You can hear him singing over the harmonized track. Where the hell did you find this video? It's great!!!!

what they are doing is "troubleshooting" their song. Working out certain idiosyncracies so it "flows" correctly.

Amazing, Chris is using Fender precision bass on this video clip.

@BassLinezzz He is using a Fender Jazz Bass NOT a Precision here.

Yes and no. "The Rick" is still doing the bulk of the duties, along with the Fish out of Water Rick.
The '75 Jazz you see here was retired about a decade ago due to intonation issues.
The White Gibson is actually a Westone Electra with built in effects pods - generally gets used for Tempus Fugit.
hairyhaw 2 years ago 5
@hairyhaw The Jazz is a 1972 model, not -75.

Watching this video makes me wonder how a band like Yes could ever collectively agree on what version of a song goes on the album.

Indeed, this is a very soft and symphonic music, requires a virtuous power: the powerful bass of Chris!

I think for this song only (on this album). He played it too on To Be Over, for example, on the Relayer album.

Jon didn't write (or co-write) this song. It was written entirely by Chris.
