I seriously suggest EVERYONE listen to this song while watching this video . Honestly want to cry because of how amazing it goes with the video. Go Usa!
Everything from 1980's just had some great feel. Some kind of "normal" or "original". Maybe it's the video/film quality I dunno. 80's were so much better time from other aspects as well.
Storm-you are wrong about Pavelich. He was excellent with the Rangers for 3 straight years. He set a Ranger rookie record for points, and had a 37 goal season (with 4 more in the playoffs) for the team. however when Brooks left and the team installed a traditional dump and chase system he quit. He certainly had good years in the NHL under brooks, he just didn't play long.
The other interesting thing about the 1980 team.... Neal Broten, was on Brooks' 4th line, and did not get a ton of ice time, yet he became the 1st American born player to score 100 points in an NHL season. Most of the teams "star players (Eurzione, Craig, McClanahan, Pavelich etc..) didn't have good pro careers. While Christian, Morrow, Broten and most certainly Mike Ramseyall had GREAT NHL careers. (Of course Pavelich went nuts in the late 80's oe he might be on the good career list)
Speaking of O'Callahan... the movie "Miracle" shows OC making his return IN THE GAME AGAINST the USSR, when in reality, he had returned 2 games before vs. Romania.
Raiindog31 makes a very good point. Mark Johnson was far and away this teams number 1 offensive player. He was their go to guy, and certainly the most skilled player on the team. (Johnson went on to have a decent NHL career, however, if he had had a little more size he would have been one of the greats.) Dave Christian playing both forward and defense also made big contributions, much more than the mythologized Jack O'Callahan.
I'm kind of sick of this. I mean don't get me wrong i'm not a Russian fan and I know it was a great victory for you Americans but it's been 31 years don't you think you should stop braging about it.
@98MovieMan It was great watching it then, great watching now, and will remain great a hundred years from now. why would you watch if it makes you "sick".
@98MovieMan It will likely never occur again. That team was not NHL ice hockey players, which are now practically the requirement to ever be on a combined U.S. (or Canada) team. They were amateurs, taking on THE most powerful (militarily trained) sports team ever to be seen in a sport. Whereas UCLA won for a period of about a decade, in college basketball; the Soviet Union basically won +85 something % of all ice hockey they played for more than four decades.
I remember yelling out loud when they scored, my Dad was downstairs, asked what was I yelling at? I told him that we won against the Soviets, he said , no way, they couldn't have, I heard him turn the TV to the Olympics and watched the rest of the game with him, best victory ever
@njmartybrodeur30 Jim Craig was incredible in this game, especially in the 1st pd. The Soviets scored 2 in the 1st but they could've had 6 if not for Craig's brilliance
you jackass.. the Soviets were the best team in the world, before the olympics they crushed the NHL allstars 6-1. The reason it was so amazing is because the US were a bunch of young college players beat this juggernaut. funny how you claim to be a hockey fan
Olympic hockey didn't mean shit till the pros were allowed to play. Any hockey fan knows that. If the best in the world can't play, who cares. Nice moment for the USA, but a little overrated if you ask me.
@WrathofKhanII i didn't have anything planned, like Michaels did. for me the whole thing was completely spontaneous. i didn't even expect to do the play-by-play. it just happened
@EpicSoldier27 no they didn't, they lost to USA, and then they won, but still scored less goals, So i guess both USA and Canada won 1 game each, but USA got more goals. So USA really won.
It is the fact that the radio announcer doing the play-by-play calls the Soviets the "Russians" that made me originally question the authenticity of this recording. Since then I've listened to it numerous times to see if I'm off-base.
Go to page three of the comments section and you can read what I posted three years ago.
Before the Mark Johnson goal the announcer counts down the clock four times in 15 seconds. At this very pivotal point in the game this just happens to coordinate exactly with the clock showing in the video. How convenient.
Add to the fact that he gets way too excited BEFORE the Johnson and Mike Eruzione goals. Both players barely have the puck and the announcer is already screaming like he ALREADY KNEW they would score.
One last comment. There are a few other things that just don't add up in my mind, and make it appear like the announcer already knew the outcome of the game. All of this put together adds some serious doubt to it in my mind to the authenticity of this recording.
You can take all the political crap out of the equation and this is still an amazing upset victory - one of the greatest in the history of sport. The USSR beat the NHL all-stars the year before and then they lose to a bunch of college kids. It was great.
Who is this announcer? At times is sounds like Frank Gifford, but this guy gets excited, something the Giffer really couldn't do well. I have in my possession the last 20 seconds of the game and the aftermatch announced by Sam Rosen, who was with FOX sports for a while and now does NY Ranger games.
@barber215 now that i think back to that moment, the removal of Tretiak was a shocker. i knew almost all of the Russian players but not Myshkin. i think i just made up a first name on the spot. ha!
The Russians are no longer the great hockey machine they were 30 years ago for the following reasons: They are no longer forced to train and practice 18 hours a day. They are no longer threatened by their country if they do not win! The USSR hockey team with no question was the best hockey team in the world over the last 30 years. The 1980 USA hockey team worked their butts off and trained hard to prepare for the games! They deserved that big win! Coach Brooks said Russia would win 9 of 10!
Nobody was threatened. Please do not reproduce rediculous cold was era myths.
As for modern days - its just because modern Russian sport turned into corrupted business. But most of all - great public sport infrastructure created by USSR was completely devastated in last 20 years
@wg390, If Russia still rules hockey and are the most talented, why did they get their asses kicked at the 2010 vancouver winter olympics. They did even get a medal in hockey, they finished 6th.
USA in 1994 finished 8th, in 1998 - 6th, in 2006 - 8th again while Russia never came worse than 6th. Just as in total medals Russia still holds 2th place after Canada.
Thanks so much for posting this! Seeing as I was born a year after the 1980 Olympics, I couldn't really help missing this game. But what I wouldn't give to be able to go back in time and experience such a historic moment...even if only by watching it on tv! So amazing.
@zorinkima The US may be great and known for ice hockey now 30 years later with their pros in the Olympics etc. - but these were their AMATEURS of the time against the Soviet "pro level" players.
@HockeyBladesLogo yeah. 2 goals. I would understand if he let 4 goals past him in a short period of time but who replaces a goalie when they only let past 2!
@mikka009 the historical context of the game was very important to the impact of the amazing upset victory. it was a time when the country really needed a lift and this game uplifted the entire nation. timing is everything.
@curtchaplin : You are so right! Hockey can cheer-up and lift an entire nation from the darkest of days =). You can imagine what Finland's victory in the IHWC of 1995 did to the country, in the aftermath of the financial crisis caused by the collapse of the Soviet Union. That gold medal triggered the opening scenes of the development that made Finland what it is today, the best country a man can live in [Newsweek, 2010]. Thanks for the introduction, and congrats again for the Olympic Gold!
Gus Johnson is the old school Curt Chaplin........Still is weird to watch this so many years ago. Even though the game was taped delayed and we knew the resuts, I still thought that night watching the game on ABC, that somehow the Soviets were going to win somehow. Greatest moment as a sports fan evah.
I have never heard this call before.. I really enjoyed it. Very good job!! Michaels gets all the attention but your call could go stride for stride with it. Thank you so much for posting it...
Does anyone know if theres a place I can watch the original broadcast that was on ABC? I wasn't alive at the time and I want to watch it in its originality.
@pikel10 I would also add 1976, when the Flyers handed the Red Army their only loss of the entire Super Series by beating them 4-1 and almost causing them to forfeit in the first period
Everybody knows the flyers didn't beat the Soviets in 1976 playing Ice "Hockey" they beat the flyers playing Ice "Football" that is why nobody (except idiots from Philadelphia) stakes any claim to that win against the All Might Soviets in 1976. It was the "Embarrassment on Ice" 1976
@pgbruiser@pgbruiser The Flyers beat the Soviets fair and square in 1976. They wanted a game in NHL conditions in Philadelphia and they got just what every NHL team faced from the Broad Street Bullies. The refs called it just like they called any NHL game. The Soviets were babies and couldn't handle a bit of aggression. Those Flyers were the last all Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup btw.
@SuperCandid1 I didn't know they where the last all Canadian team to win a cup. Thats kinda funny though since it has been reported the 76' flyers team was also 60% queer and another 20% retard, BTW. Coincidence? I think not. Same demographics as actual "Canada" itself.
@pgbruiser awww - did I hit a nerve with your favorite communist team? Or was it Canada beating the US for those 2 Olympic Gold medals this decade? Hey at least yer the 2nd best hockey country in the world now.
@pikel10 You missed the 1987 Canada Cup Series Final which is still considered by many to be the greatest hockey ever played, in terms of the level of skill and creativity displayed. Otherwise, good list.
@Nemoidian I'd put that 1987 Canada Cup Series at #4 reason being the Canada Cups and World Cups played up until 2004 were not as high profile internationally as the Canada/USSR Summit Series in 1972 nor the Olympics. The skill level of the hockey was outstanding though, and a great moment for Canada with Mario Lemieux scoring the series winner on a pass from Gretzky.
It was Russias fault. they took out their all star goalie in the 1st period and KEPT him out the entire game as punishment for allowing those first 2 goals. That act was their downfall. If they had kept them in it would have increased their chances of winning insanely. USA USA USA USA USA
This was an afternoon game...I was 19, sitting in my car in a supermarket parking lot, and my friend drove up and said, "Dude the US just beat the Soviets" . I said "No way." "YES, I'm telling you!!!!" NO WAY, IMPOSSIBLE" "YES!!!!" "NO WAY"... for like 5 minutes.
It's hard to exaggerate how big an upset it was, it was like a HS team beating the Yankees or something... tons of Americans didn't even watch that afternoon (like me) because it wasn't hyped up, everybody knew they would lose.
This is the battle that won the cold war! And if the Canadians are so great, where the hell are they? Canucks take so much credit for hockey, even though they jacked it from the native-Americans.
@buckynance i dubbed in some of Dryden's comments to help cover video replays and transitions. remember, i had no color man working with me that day when i called the game by myself in the stands.
@curtchaplin What a fantastic video! As a hockey fan, I wish I had been alive to see this happen, but it's wonderful hearing your commentary and that of the many others who were reporting on this live. I can't even imagine what it felt like to see that occur. Seeing the Landon Donovan goal in the World Cup was pretty elating, but even that pales to this monumental feat by the US team.
@17thknight it was the most amazing event i ever witnessed. so glad to be able to share it with so many hockey fans around the world. thank goodness the batteries in my tape recorder didn't run out in the middle of the game haha
I guess you could say that they were strong, but nobody knew it yet. They were amateurs and college players going up against the unstoppable soviet team. The soviet team had won the gold medal in ice hockey since 1964 and they had already won against the NHL team. There was no way these guys were going to win... unless... do you believe in miracles?
It was a picture perfect David Vs. Goliath story and the cold war added to it. We weren't just rivals in sports back then.
@oODropshotOo TY for repeating all that stuff for me as if I dont know shiit :D
Nobody knew that the team in olympic semifinal match was strong? You're right only weaklings get there! Miracle is a thing that happens once and the US team had quite many miracles on its way beating elite teams and getting to Semifinal and then Winning GOLD rofl The press' ignorance at its best tbh. 2010 Olympics again : "omfg US team - underdogs... no chance." You're just afraid of bewitching! :D
@SuperBlackhawksfan88 that IS dryden. i lifted and layered in some of his comments throughout my audio mix. i needed him to cover certain replays and transitions. remember, i called the game alone without the benefit of a TV monitor, replays, or a color man.
WOW, the US beat the Soviets in a ice hockey match and made a movie, what an archievement ! But of the 61 meetings between US and USSR! I think the soviets should make 55 movies about the soviet victory over USA, some of the victory including a score of 10-2. :P LMFAO
Until 2:54 in the morning on August 28, I have always thought that Micheal's call was one of the greatest calls ever. That has changed. Radio in my opinion has the best audio and announcers. I don't know who this is but it is amazing!!!
Rumour has it that the USSR took a knee on this game. After the Soviet players returned to the Soviet Union they began being seen in brand new sports cars and jewelry...something never seen with hockey playes in that country before. And there's no way the Russian govt bought them these toys after that loss...so I kind of believe the rumours. The Soviets looked like they weren't even trying, and the coach pulled their best goalie after only two goals....hmmmmmm....hmmmmmm

@capsfan89128 I disagree. Tretiak looked very week on those first two goals.
HockeyBladesLogo 1 year ago
@HockeyBladesLogo yeah. 2 goals. I would understand if he let 4 goals past him in a short period of time but who replaces a goalie when they only let past 2!
capsfan89128 1 year ago
@mikka009 the historical context of the game was very important to the impact of the amazing upset victory. it was a time when the country really needed a lift and this game uplifted the entire nation. timing is everything.
curtchaplin 1 year ago 35

Greatest moment as a sports fan evah.
johnnymaher1027 1 year ago
@johnnymaher1027 being compared to Gus Johnson is a high compliment, indeed. i'd say he's my favorite play-by-play announcer in the business today.

3 greatest hockey moments of all time:
1972 - Canada's Henderson scores in last minute to win 1st ever elites of hockey Superpower Summit Series
1980 - Eruzione's goal to win Olympic Gold for the huge underdog USA over the USSR at the height of the Cold War
2010 - Crosby's overtime goal over the USA to give Canada the gold and most ever gold medals won at a Winter Olympics
pikel10 1 year ago
@pikel10 crosby's overtime goal was cheap crap
getusetoitreebok 1 year ago
@pikel10 I would also add 1976, when the Flyers handed the Red Army their only loss of the entire Super Series by beating them 4-1 and almost causing them to forfeit in the first period
frynross1 1 year ago
@frynross1 Yeah sure! You must be a flyers fan.
Everybody knows the flyers didn't beat the Soviets in 1976 playing Ice "Hockey" they beat the flyers playing Ice "Football" that is why nobody (except idiots from Philadelphia) stakes any claim to that win against the All Might Soviets in 1976. It was the "Embarrassment on Ice" 1976
pgbruiser 1 year ago
@pgbruiser I'm a Rangers fan, and I do agree with you about that statement. I thought it just deserved a mention
frynross1 1 year ago
@pgbruiser @pgbruiser The Flyers beat the Soviets fair and square in 1976.
SuperCandid1 1 year ago
@SuperCandid1 I didn't know they where the last all Canadian team to win a cup. Thats kinda funny though since it has been reported the 76' flyers team was also 60% queer and another 20% retard, BTW. Coincidence? I think not. Same demographics as actual "Canada" itself.
pgbruiser 1 year ago
@pgbruiser awww - did I hit a nerve with your favorite communist team? Or was it Canada beating the US for those 2 Olympic Gold medals this decade? Hey at least yer the 2nd best hockey country in the world now.

@SuperCandid1 Come' on you have to admit, my last post was pretty funny???
peace!

@pikel10 You missed the 1987 Canada Cup Series Final which is still considered by many to be the greatest hockey ever played, in terms of the level of skill and creativity displayed. Otherwise, good list.
Nemoidian 1 year ago
@Nemoidian I'd put that 1987 Canada Cup Series at #4 reason being the Canada Cups and World Cups played up until 2004 were not as high profile internationally as the Canada/USSR Summit Series in 1972 nor the Olympics. The skill level of the hockey was outstanding though, and a great moment for Canada with Mario Lemieux scoring the series winner on a pass from Gretzky.
pikel10 1 year ago
The 50 people who disliked this are obviously Soviet sympathizers. Commies.
turb05 1 year ago

Ken Dryden was dubbed in for historical purposes I suppose.
buckynance 1 year ago
@buckynance i dubbed in some of Dryden's comments to help cover video replays and transitions. remember, i had no color man working with me that day when i called the game by myself in the stands.
curtchaplin 1 year ago
@curtchaplin What a fantastic video! As a hockey fan, I wish I had been alive to see this happen, but it's wonderful hearing your commentary and that of the many others who were reporting on this live. I can't even imagine what it felt like to see that occur. Seeing the Landon Donovan goal in the World Cup was pretty elating, but even that pales to this monumental feat by the US team.

I still have no idea why it was "a miracle" :S The US team went on to win GOLD MEDAL! May be it means that the team was actually STRONG rofl?
temmy69 1 year ago
@temmy69
We weren't just rivals in sports back then.
oODropshotOo 1 year ago
@oODropshotOo TY for repeating all that stuff for me as if I dont know shiit :D
Nobody knew that the team in olympic semifinal match was strong? You're right only weaklings get there! Miracle is a thing that happens once and the US team had quite many miracles on its way beating elite teams and getting to Semifinal and then Winning GOLD rofl The press' ignorance at its best tbh. 2010 Olympics again : "omfg US team - underdogs... no chance." You're just afraid of bewitching! :D
