  • He plays both. "Maggie" is played on a 12 string but this is and most stuff is 6.

  • it's just so simple and true and emotive

  • love this song, love his voice, his honesty and truthfulness. wow.

  • Stunning musician. Damn.

  • Que sonzeira de viola!!! esse é mestre!!

  • i have to kno y someone voted a dislike to this?

  • It's 12 string tuned to a DADGAD tuning.

  • it rings out G A D maybe open D

  • 5:16 beer bottle was dropped out of amazement

  • @AndyH91 Followed by a bratwurst and some cheese curds

  • this is THE greatest love song ever written

  • Your face it dances and it haunts me Your laughter's still ringing in my ears I still find pieces of your presence here Even after all these years But I don't want you thinking I don't get asked to dinner 'Cause I'm here to say that I sometimes do Even though I may soon feel the touch of love I just don't think I'll ever get over you If I lived till I was 102 I just don't think I'll ever get over you
  • I drink good coffee every morning Comes from a place that's far away And when I'm done I feel like talking Without you here there is less to say I don't want you thinking I'm unhappy What is closer to the truth That if I lived till I was 102 I just don't think I'll ever get over you I'm no longer moved to drink strong whisky 'Cause I shook the hand of time and I knew That if I lived till I could no longer climb my stairs I just don't think I'll ever get over you
  • I like the coffee-house-feel of his album version of this song with his raspy voice. But this is pretty amazing too.

  • Just for the people who think he is playing a 6 string and is creating an illusion.. He is playing a 12 string.. Look at the bridge pins.. And the tuning keys.. There are 12 haha

  • How can anyone not wanna tear up when listening to this song?

  • Yeap, that's definitely an open tuning.

  • This is the best version of this song I've heard.

  • he playes a six just the botom strings are tuned to a c so they are the same it kinda makes an illusion that its a 12

  • Great Song !!!

  • this song makes me want to cry every time.

  • @stairwaygoddess alot of women think most guys are a bunch of cheating dogs & treat women bad well i think this songs honors the very rare & few men that believe in true love & when its heartbreak has such in impact on thier life its there forever sadly i know far to well

  • @avatarhammer true. it goes both ways. men can think the same about women. but real and painstaking love can be felt by (and torn by) both sexes.

  • this song is so raw and real is just amazing.

  • lonepuma, how you can say that this performance is a dissapointment compared to a ravi shankar jam is beyond comprehension

  • This song is one of the reasons I went to see him this year at World Cafe in Philly... Let me tell ya something, this dude is AWESOME in concert! Believe it... this is one of his best renditions of this classic!

  • I was there at the World Cafe and I couldn't agree with you more. Awesome show. He's one of my biggest influences as a songwriter.

  • This was definately foreplay music for me and mine (then)!

  • so did you and he break up?

  • Awesome!

  • I forgot about that ~ or when he told the loud table at the back of the house, "Try whispering in her ear, instead of ruining my effing concert!" A witty man, indeed.

  • Just saw him last night in Grand Rapids, MI. This tune stopped the house. He was funny and personable, and it was a powerful perfomance. He's a very, very gifted man. Thanks so much for sharing with us, Colin!

  • THAT Show was AMAZING!! And you are so right...funny, personable..and so much more. And the stories he told will forever bring a smile to my face. "I want to be your foreplay tonight.." still cracks me up!!

  • He's definitely playing it in a different key-

  • I have watched this alot of times, and when I see the bottles, I imagine Colin in a kilt. He should wear one don't cha think? He could pull it off.

  • Incredible song, very moving thanks for posting!

  • I just saw Colin at the Coach House in Orange Co., CA.

Best show I've evber been to...I laughed, I cried, it was fantastic.

  • One of my favourite songs. Thanks for posting.

  • i love this song so much :). for those of you who asked.. he's definitely playing a 12 string guitar here. i play it on a regular six string guitar, with it tuned to DADGAD. sounds lovely and relaxing to play :) would strum this for hours.

  • I think I like it even more in the higher key than the original.

    Beautiful, either way.

  • I really dislike the different pauses in this version.

  • dude powerbookg its colin everytime is freaking different because he is a genius and he doesnt need a set structure to be able to sing to the person he loves. it is more meaningful

  • Dude.... chill out. He was just saying he disliked the pauses in this version. Doesn't mean he hates the song, doesn't mean he hates Sir Hay, doesn't mean he hates every version Sir Hay has ever done live... just means he dislikes this version. You know how I know? He said something along the lines of "this version." Christ.

  • i kind of agree, he's playing it faster and with slightly different rhythms. but it's still great though

  • Doggone. I have to post twice. This song breaks my heart.

  • Gorgeous, gorgeous. Sad, sad.

  • I think this one is on the Transendental Highway CD. Anyway, this song comes up at the very end. I used to play the CD when I jogged, and it was always such a great song to cool down with. By the way, I get to see him play next week. Lucky me.

  • Does he play that with a 12-string or 6-string?

  • Geez. I really don't remember. I think it was a 6 on this song. However, if you are looking for the tuning, check the first comments that were made on this video.

  • @nodbot If you pay attention to the base of the guitar where the strings attach(pegs), theres 12, so a 12 string. Also, if you play guitar, you can hear the difference.

  • its a 12 string hilmcayse.

  • @HiImCaysE 12

  • @HiImCaysE he plays with a six the two bottom strings are tuned to the same to kinda give an illusions that its a 12 haha he's pretty great

  • @HiImCaysE

    12 in this clip.

  • @HiImCaysE When I saw him at the Soiled Dove Underground in Denver a few years ago, he was playing a 6 string and played this song so wonderfully. I even got to meet him after the show and he autographed a c/d 4 me and let my friend take a pic of he and I. I'm still stoked about that one!

  • The best song in the world

  • This song is an instant classic. I love it!

  • a 5 year relationship done...i know i will always miss her

  • It's hard for anyone to come back from that.

Take care, and hang in there.

  • thankyou for putting this up, ive just lost my gf and this song truly embodies how i feel right now, thankyou for this

  • i just dont think i'll ever get over you! EVER! :( This song always makes me break down in tears! I love it! :(

  • This is such a beautiful, bittersweet song. I need it right now, though. It's so powerful.

  • I hope things get better.

  • Thank you, that's a very nice thing of you to say

  • I wasnt sure how this song would go live but this performance is amazing.

  • he gives one of the most wonderful live peformances, regardless of croud size. truly magical.

  • i love you!!!!!!

  • Feeling blue, I miss you Black...

Alin's joyful laughter still rings in my ears..

And, no, I don't think I ever will get over him.

He was "Ready to settle down" and then taken from those who loved him by a suspicious cause of death just weeks later. I'm grateful he was in my life and we played awesome music together!

  • why would that comment be spammed?

  • wow this is such an amazing song...

just goes to show just as long as u play from the heart u can never go wrong

  • colin hay is under rated

  • @dakajoju Atleast his recognition got up a bit with his Scrubs collabs

  • We come to realize, that the simplest thigs are the most beautiful

    thank you colin

  • Wow, a 12 string guitar?? That's impressive XD

I really love this song. It's really sad, but it kind of explains me..

  • i f'd it up - i realized that a while back...he's such an amazing person....my ex..... :(

    - Im weak, cowardly....my problem - my issues......song = me.....feelings, void, disappointment, happiness. shame on me

  • I was 28 dating a 56 year old. This was our song. How cool was that (he)? We are still close friends. Anything is possible.

  • simply brilliant

  • *tears*

    ...

  • ditto :(

  • Is he playing a 12 or 6 string?

  • If I remember correctly, he was play a 12 on this song.

  • Thanks mate. Very beautiful and rings true to life.

  • what a very honest song...

  • This song is amazing

Anyone know what tuning he is playing it in? it sounds different than the studio version.

  • He's playing in DADGAD.

  • The origional song is recorded in DGCFCC, but this one does sound like DADGAD its a bit higher than the origional

  • i have been listening to this song lately, imagining it from the perspective of a man who has died. perhaps he is singing to the love of his life. anyway, it's the song i would have playing at my funeral (to my wife). colin hay is amazing.

  • the most played track on my iPod...

  • Mine as well. Tied with "scattered Black And Whites" by Elbow.

  • Love of my life ended it with me - went out for four and a half years. Heartbroken but this song makes me feel better for a few minutes. Great song.

  • Wow! this song is amazing, straight from the heart, i wish artists did this more often! when i first heard this song i instantly thought wow this guy knows how I felt. when he says "i don't want you thinking I'm unhappy" thats so true, you don't want their sympathy on you but you're so lonely and still in love with them...I wish i could meet him to tell him this is the most honest song iv ever heard!

  • It hurt quite a lot for quite a while but I did eventually get over it and moved on with my life. I certainly won't be wasting any more breath feeling sorry for myself over what might have been. Life's too short and filled with too much beauty for that.

  • oh man, it's so much more beautiful live. what an incredible song.

  • I don't think all of his songs are autobiographical but you never know.

  • That is true...

    I always forget that somehow.

Still would be interesting to know what the song is about.

  • Did his wife die or something?

Because to me, this sounds like someone died, or a relationship ended.

    But it's so amazingly beautiful.

  • hey all you people out there i also know the feeling, i was crazy about this girl and she never paid any attention, she even kind of played with my feelings, it was awful, BUT a few months later a met this other girl who brought me back and put me up to the clouds even higher than the girl before, we are together now and it feels great so, don't lose hope after all, you'll find the right one

  • Yeah the same thing happened to me with a chick I went to grad school with. She played with my feelings for over two years (which I think had a lot to do with boosting her own ego) and I was finally forced to bring an end to her game and cut off all contact with her.

  • djtoolhead

    jjp009 and drratburn

i know how all of you feel i am going through the exact same thing with the one ive loved for about 4 years now hardest thing ive ever had to do

besides that colin hay is amazing one of the best songs ever written im sure this song can relate to anyone

such amazing chord structure unique tuning and he never plays it the same way twice!

  • I wish I could see him live...

In my opinion, one of the greatest song writers.

  • i love this song.

  • Another guy that sounds a bit like Colin Hay is Chris Moore. Search Chris Moore Melting Point.

  • dude, this is pretty lame self promotion. you aren't anywhere close to being as talented as Colin Hay.

  • Just curious but is this comment directed at creem?

  • Yeah dude that was low..

  • I think everyone beholds this song for a certain someone.

  • The master...

  • trust me you don't want a broken heart and listen to this song. it hurts pretty bad

  • amen, from the bottom of my heart

  • oh man, i couldnt agree more.

  • i am wishing for a miracle... my heart is bleeding and I love her and I know that I'll never get over her. Please pray for me guys, please! It's Christmas and I love her from the deepest part of my heart. her name is Alana!

  • catherine: My broken heart is now over two years old, and it STILL hurts. There has been no one else since her and it doesn't look like the ache will ever leave. She was the one that got away...and this song hits me right between the eyes.

  • i know how you all feel... i'm in it right now...

life has slowed down and become something tough to keep moving and all i can do is wish she were back

  • djtool: Hang in there, man. I wish I could tell you it will get better, but you know, sometimes it just doesn't. And even if you meet someone else, it will never be the same. Sorry.

  • Same here, the girl I've liked for two years, I had to force myself to say good-bye. This song brings me back to when I was happier, then when the song ends, it reminds me of how of me and her deff. are..It hurts..

  • one of my favourite songs... thanks for posting

  • trust me me bajov you dont need a freshly broken heart to remember an old one

  • that's the truth

  • Wow! Colin HAy is fucking AMazing!! I haven't heard a song this honest in a LONG time. This song is one of those that makes you wish you had a freshly broken heart to savor it with. ---Oh, what sweet, sweet, bitter-sweetness!

  • shivers

  • I just saw him perform live tonight (9/25/07) in Louisville, KY. What a wonderful song. I also had a chance to chat a bit with him.

  • what a very honest song...

  • wow, he's really fucking great live. I hope he comes by SF soon.

  • does anyone have the tuning he uses here? there are some ok tabs but not with this tuning, which seems kind of easy.

    great song, thanks!

  • I think it's in open C mate...least thats what I play it in.

  • benklan: From the lowest (bass) to the highest (treble) strings, it's DGCFCC.

  • benklan: Woops, my previous post was the tuning for the studio recording of this song. The live version here is one whole step up. So, from bass to treble it's EADGDD. Hope this helps anyone who loves this song as much as I do.

  • @jjp009 Actually, I think it is dADGDD. That way it has an even more open and rich sound. The thing that gives it away is that he appears to be fretting the 6th string on the 5th fret on the words "I drink good". So the chords are:

    I drink good

    550400

    coffee every

    707600

    morning

    000200

  • benklan: Even better is DADGDD!

  • Here Colin is playing in DADGAD mate. It's really easy.

  • not really, technically this isn't a video file per se. It's a flash video which I don't think can be exported. If you could get a program of some sort that records anything being played on your sound card, you might be able to record it to a wav file (thought the quality sorta sucks).

I think WAVStudio did this back in the day.

  • Is there any way to make an mp3 of this? I love 'live' versions of songs and this one is great.

  • I believe the program you need is called "freecorder" - not sure though - try googling it...if you're a mac user then "audio hijack"...

  • It is a great song..I ove that sountrack and Garden State....Thanks

  • This is absolutely awesome. I love this song, and it has a quite personal meaning for me.

    Thanks for posting it.

  • No problem. Glad you like it.

  • Thanks for posting this.

  • You can see there is a little blur to the left in the beginning so I had to zoom in a little. (A girl sitting next to me moved in front of the camera.) Some where in the beginning and at the end of the song you can hear beer bottles being knocked over. (This was the last song of the night.) Enjoy.

  • I get the pleasure of seeing colin every other month or so at Largo in L.A. (including last night) and this song makes me weep every time... although he rarely plays it anymore - thanks for posting this - its a beatiful, beautiful song.

  • Thanks! I really like this recording. Even the beer bottle being kicked over at the end of the song - did I mention it was recorded in Milwaukee. Cheers! :)
