Woah...that first high pitched hit. Even sitting here on youtube I felt my gut clench up and was expecting to hear that enemy contact "boop". The music is just that good.
This game was almost near 100% perfect - and I tell you what, it still plays as well all these years later. Okay - graphically it looks dated - but when the game is this good who cares?
I'm glad I still have Homeworld, Cataclysm, and Homeworld 2 in their original cases to this date, along with all their Soundtrack discs. This is one part of my childhood I am sure to take to the grave with me.

theres a reason this game has won so many awards, because to this day, i still cannot find a game with such an atmosphere, story line, or gameplay. the only game to rival this in terms of story line, is halo
homeworld 3. we need a homeworld 3. like this, and maybe relic or whoever it is now will see this and make it. this music is the BEST battle music ever. homeworld really is the only true 3D RTS, and homeworld 2 was NEARLY a flop. homeworld 3 with now-days 3D graphics would make homeworld 3 the best selling game of the century. homeworld is just that epic.
This song is simply amazing. Homeworld has one of, if not the best soundtracks ever conceived by man. The intensity and power are nothing less than moving.
@Iseeyoursoul Oh, no, I already have a working converter, it really WAS just out of curiosity - but thank you for offering... and of course, for putting up this video. I actually converted it months ago, and it's on my MP3. Homeworld is just amazing like that.
The percussion line that starts 'round 0:22 and goes into its full form at 0:50. It is pure epic. That's really what keeps the song going - the odd vocal(?) effect just makes it even more epic.
Camera pans over Khar-Selim. Player: 'Wha?... Aw crap, it's destroyed.' Turanic raiders zoom into view, racing and bashing into each other, going towards the Mothership. Song plays. Player: '...Ah, CRAP.' *panic*
This game was so wonderful. Correction, is wonderful, even 10 years later.
@Jpzinho007 just because you love one thing doesnt mean you have to hate the other one. RELIC made homeworld and that makes them awesome, but valve brought us portal and counterstrike, and that makes them awesome too.
It's kind of sad to know that the companies that made this game are don't like each other anymore and they killed off the series. But, ah, I guess it doesn't hurt to let masterpieces be.
Relic made it for Sierra. then Relic switched to making games for THQ instead. but Sierra still had the license for Homeworld so relic couldn't make a new game.
THQ bought the Homeworld license from Sierra however, so there's nothing stopping Relic from making a 3rd game.
I think it's fully possible to see a new Homeworld on the horizon. But anyone who loves Homeworld should try out the MMO EVE Online. Many of the players are diehard fans of this wonderful series. However, if a Homeworld 3 is to be made, I would probably jizz my pants.
IMO the first Homeworld had more better battle music - the constant penetrating deep hum;the imitation of war drums, and the war horn;the slow build-up of the song, almost like the anticipation of a great battle...
I just didn't get that kind of thrill while playing Cataclysm. :P
Beat Star Wars? I don't know.. Homeworld was awesome, mindblowing and very original in my opinion. But Star Wars is so famous, it'll probably be many decades before people start forgetting it. But a good Homeworld movie would most likely attract a bunch of fans.
Camble Lane is one of the best narrator voices out there. I saw his short appearance in Razor and damn I wish they make a movie of this because the sheer scale of it is worth a try on script if done right. Oh and fantastic post.
I have to agree, the atmosphere of the original Homeworld game was incredible, few other games have drawn me in and had me hooked like this one did. And I'd say 90% of the atmosphere is created by the brilliant soundtrack.
they didnt put the raider retreat mission in the game because it was considered too hard and was cut from the game, i never actually played it but i did see a vid of it, its pretty intense. If i remember corectly, you could only get it from preoredering hwc , it came with cataclysm. I have no idea how to get it now, may be down load it
hmmm ... not quite ... the was on it´s time more than awesome no doubt about that... but the only thing that irritadet me was that the the 2 races had identical ships without any real difference just the design was different ... and what i didn´t like is that both races had the same storyline ... that was a bit dissapointig to me ...
Taiidani were added after playtesters for homeworld requested it. The Kushan have better turret positioning on their ships such as the assault frigate and destroyer and are therefore more effective that their Taiidani counterparts. They also had the cloaking fighter.
@viralhatred Though the Spectre-class Cloaked Fighter is arguably rather useless, given its small tank...and the fact the cloak draws from that reservoir.
This game played out like a movie. The music was such an integral part to it's atmosphere. Hard to believe it's almost ten years old. It still looks great + I personally think 1 brought more original design and involving storyline than 2. Both great games but 1 had the innovation.
Its a real shame not many people know of this game. If they ever heard of Homeworld they think of Homeworld 2 instead.
I think relic should maybe re-make this game with the new technology, bringing back all the old voice actors, story and the music but with better graphics and animation.
@Phantomsbreath - update the graphics to what we can see today and allow for bigger fleets to be on screen at the same time (so instead of the Bridge of Sighs level where you can only see 6 Ion Frigates out of that huge sphere....you can see ALL of them).
It has. Several websites and game magazines gave it the "Game of the Year 1999" title. :-) I think it was well deserved - Homeworld is a great example of quality space opera among the space sim genre. The Homeworldverse itself reminds me a bit of Dune and other similiar works...
I'm not sure you're right, but I'm pretty sure. And forget being a fanboy - I never even finished the game. I'm not sure I ever will; the last time I tried I became so upset and horrified at what was happening I set the game aside for three years.
I'm still trying to win level 5. It's not that easy, when you're not used to it. I used to be good. And I lost the game disc. So now I have to relearn how to play.
The Homeworld games had and still have incredible music. Always gave me goosebumps when I was listening to it ingame. Great idea with uploading the tracks here.
