One word for this mix "BEAUTIFUL" dude that was a tight,,,and i mean tight mix bro! Great job, i could not stop laughing when i heard and seen all those chops! Tape editing was and always will be Way ahead of its time. The greats back in the day were The Latin Rascals, Jose "Chep" Nunez, Carlos Berrios, Omar Santana, etc. Looking forward to the other videos bro! Much Respect
☺ I remember those reel to reels. Nowadays its all windows programs. Like Audacity , Virtual DJ serrato ect .... got some virtual dj remixes on my channels
As a Latin kid coming from the Bronx New York, I had no idea these freestyle songs went past NY, Miami and maybe california. People are complementing your tape deck, technique, which is great, but the SONG SELECTION (january February is one most beautitful dub mixes) is superb and captured the true spirit of that sound at the time.
Thank you SO much for showing edits on camera for the first time. (Something I always wanted to see since 1986.
Indeed, me and my cousin bought ourselves broke on those import vinyls back then. Those were well-known tracks in certain circles, radio-stations and club-dancings over here. Basically, The Netherlands picked up music from everywhere all the time, it's in our cultural nature to do that, or so I've been told. Always a trading nation and stuff. But thanks! New (old) filmed mix coming up soon on my channel..
I think this is one of the few clips in U-tube where you can notice some of the wide band characteristics of reel. Also, even this edit is superior to some digital crap played these days. I noticed some degradation in the sound around the min 9 - was a dirty head or a different tape cut?
Now this, ladies and gentleman, is a classic example of determination, hard work and an end result to prove it. Magnificent editing. I would not dare try matching these skills ;)
Nu the way, is this tape played at 15 inches /sec?
And i listen since 1987 every year more than one time to the yearmix 87.And everytime i discovered something new:-)Thanks for the great work you did with hens!I will listen to that mixes till i'm dead;-)Greeting from germany! jörg
Hello Julius! I've heard your "it takes a mix to fall in love" first time on TROS Radio in the end of 1986!Followed in 1987 by the "AM-FM To Perfection Mix" and this one here!
For me all three mixes and the yearmixes 87/88 are timeless masterpieces! It's not only the perfect editing ;-) I've never heard so perfect key mixing and playing with differnt harmonys!
Coming from this era I have always been blown away by edits!!! Never knew how they were done for years, now I use my Su700 sampler to make decent edits...nothing as dope as these!!!
Now THAT was some good editing. Don't know what I was more impressed with: the number of splices? Or the surgical precision with how they were done. I thought I was good at cutting tape. But I wouldn't dare touch something like that.
This one was done using the < 350 kbit/s flv upload anti-re-encode option. YouTube/Google no longer allow this, they re-encode all uploaded video these days. See:
You did an amazing job, and a service, As an old school Chicago d.j. I appreciate the shotgun edits and time you put in. I have a tascam 32 and that's what I use to use.
Let me ask you, Are those shotguns done by just rerecording the part or beat several times and spliceing them together??
I am familiar with editing just to get to a break or shorten the song in my mixes, but the Shoutgun or crazy edits just seemed like a mystery? I would appreciate any response
If you have a Yahoo!-ID you can go to the yahoogroup with the name "editheadz" and make yourself a member of it, then search the archives of it for the answers you're looking for. There is just too much info to put in just one comment here on YouTube.. Also read all the comments to other tape-deck videos I have here, my answers there are already given so many times it gets a bit boring to have to write it over and over and over.. I'm sure you'll understand ;-)
Julius, strakke mix, lekker tapen ;) altijd goed voor uren frustratie :) Werkt beter dan knippen op een tdk tapie..... damn lastig :) als je meer filmies kan uppen :) grtz, Daniël 5*****
These are Maxell XLI 35-180B(N) tapes, which are back-coated, and I think are CrO2. They are no longer being produced. You should see the prices they sell at on eBay these days.. the thing is, they don't seem to shed or tear or wear much at all. They will probably still sound fine in 2050.
I used to use those tapes and I gotta say, they absolutely ran rings around Ampex mastering tape. The backcoating on the Maxell tapes is similar but they were made with a much more stable binder and don't break down as badly as Ampex 406 and 456 did.
Jules you have done some terrific work on these, really awesome stuff. Look forward to any more you may have!
The clear sound is not only because of good tape but the fact they were done at 15 IPS. The faster the tape rolls, the better the quality - and Revox decks were built like tanks. I've got one like that here (a 7.5/15 machine from about '85).
always great! can you explain me how do you do to have stereo audio on youtube? i followed billions of (video) tutorials but invane, maybe you know the exact procedure to do it... :)
Well, the best ones I know are the Studer or ReVox reel-to-reel tape machines. Solid, sturdy, lasting and extremely reliable (the tape filmed here is over 21 years old, and shows no audible loss in quality, so that proves it...) A Revox B77 MkII does not crash ;)
But to be fair; it might look cool, it really is something from the past, even for me. I prefer to use Vegas Pro, SoundForge and similar tools to do the same or better things now.. ;-)

Remarkably TIGHT. I enjoyed the whole mix, but the section where Street Dance comes in behind Nocera is beautiful. Well done.

Hey mooi man,
Mooi om te zien hoe dat vroeger ging.
Zal vast een hoop werk hebben gekost.
Waarvoor deed je het eigenlijk?, was het voor je eigen als hobby?
Of werdt dit uitgezonden? of iets in die richting?
