Secord was just a kid here. Gillies was definitely a better fighter, but you are talking about a 20 year old fighting a 28 year old in his prime. Both men were very tough, and both were excellent hockey players. Gillies was very much like OReilly in a sense that OReilly led the B's in points with 91 in a season and Gillies for far from just a goon. He was a very good all around player and was very much a power forward.

The other big fighters (Shultz, Tiger Williams) you see were goons or at least guys that got a lot of penalty minutes. Gillies never reached 100 penalty minutes in a season. He fought to defend his teammates, get his team going or when some young guy wanted to try and make a name for himself take on the big guy. Usually they regretted it.
I saw Gillies many times at the Nassau Colliseum and on local TV on Long Island, and you are right. Goon does not apply to Jethro. He was the first true power forward in hockey. He could score, check and if someone really needed to fight, he could do that too. Plus his presence alone made Trottier and Bossy a lethal combo. The line of Gillies, Bossy and Trottier was one of the best lines in the history of the NHL.
Secord thought he was going to do some damage, but Jethro was not going to be denied. If you see the look on his face, as well as (on other videos) Nystrom's and the other Isles during that playoff year, you can see why nothing was going to stop them that time around.
