im a mighty ducks fan who lives in Toronto, not a huge fan of the leafs, but that hit was clean. today's NHL if you tried to lay a clean hit on players like Sidney Crosby, Patrick Kane and other star players like the way Stevens and other clean hitters did in the past, then you would be in the box for something stupid. The real issue is players who intend to endanger other players, but i will tell you that there is no way in hell that Stevens wasn't a goon. clean hitter with respect.

@dailybrother Stevens was a goon. Clear cut. Most of his big hits he uses his shoulders, or in worse cases his elbow, to run into the oposing players head. Perfect example is the famous Lindros hit. Stevens claims he never meant to hurt anyone, but you'd have to be pretty stupid to think that hitting somone in the head at full speed isn't going to hurt anyone. His hits are dirty.

Why would Stevens be interested in a fight? 2-0 in the 3rd period. One of the best defencemen of his era would rather be on the ice helping his team wouldn't you think. He made a completely clean hit and shouldnt need to fight about it.

It's actually four elbowing penalties, but still. You can count 'em on one hand. And, at the time he retired, he had played more games than any other defenseman in the history of the game (I think Poppa Chelios has since passed him) and had compiled only four elbowing penalties. Especially for a guy who hit as often and as hard as Stevens, that's quite an accomplishment.
Another little-known Stevens stat: He's played in more games that his team won than any other player in league history.
