As a musician and aspiring comedian I really dig this guy. I watched Metalocalypse on lsd which was an amazing experience because I never once laughed at the show until then because of how ridiculous the show was it took drugs for me to realize that. This guy is way too awesome, and this amp sounds good.
There are a few factors involved in this video/recording that might make the amp sound different or even better than it would hearing it in person.
One, the cab is in an ISO booth in Brendon's studio. So, that right there gives it an acoustic advantage over playing it out live or at home.
Two, I would assume that he has a decent guitar mic placed correctly, in front of the best sounding speaker in the cab. Plus, it helps to use the right cab and mic to get the sound you are looking for.
Reason most people don't get this kind of sound is two reasons=>1st volume, he's running the thing at 4 which is ridiculously loud, yes you'll need a iso room. the legacy needs to be loud. 2nd, hearing the legacy is nothing like actually playing it, you can make it sound great but it requires you to work your strings.
@DeekyDicawdo Season 1 and 2 was Krank. Marshall deal was for Season 3. Carvin is for his solo stuff. Honestly does any guitar player use only one amp?
@KMD861 As I recall, the backing tracks for Galakticon were done before Dethalbum II. Dethalbum II was already out when Brendon got his first Legacy II amp. He recorded and finished Galakticon guitar tracks using Legacy II. It's not the only amp he used, but it is on those recordings. As he mentioned with the Dethalbums, it's a long process to get the record company deal set, which explains the delayed release of Galakticon. April 2012 is the release Brendon told me last week.
@DeekyDicawdo is it stupid while tracking to split the signal into a Marshall and Carvin -- is that a stupid mix sense they both have a hard crunch -- or is it smart since they are engineered differently? I know marshal and ac30 are a killer combo -- any thoughts?
of course it's not just the amp. carvin has an awesome sound by itself but no amp has a strait up delay unless its a modeler... I have the X100B which sounds awesome distortion is nice but the clean iis to die for. it's no Legacythough... a little delay on it and i'm getting any sound I like . Carvin is just simply more versatile than any amp I've played through. Hey Steve ... my shipping address is ...... hehe I WANT A LEGACY TOO ...
I have the Legacy II and it sounds nothing like that. The dirty channel (channel 3) is VERY week with the distortion. Finally just switched to a V3. He definitely isn't getting that sound straight from the amp. Carvin makes great amps, but they always seem to BS their customers with the Legacy II's distortion. Really sucks. If I could get that sound out of mine I would.
@jeep65248 Thats odd. I had a legacy II for awhile and it was more than capable of a good lead tone. Look at his settings in the video. He has the bass down way low. Thats probably why it sounds so tight an treble heavy. Remember somtimes instead of turning up your presence and treble you only have to turn down your bass. I just think you need to spend more time dialing it in. I would also recommend using some different tubes. Im a real big fan of the JJ e34L and their 12AX7.
whats important to remember is that the key to getting a certain tone is more in your fingers than anything else. The legacy II has plenty of gain on tap and can achieve metal tones but you have to be willing to tweak it. You cant "visually" dial it in like you would when you sit down on a 5150 or a dual rec. It takes finesse. Brendon also from what I know uses very hot pickups which can mimick the effects of a boost due to their high output. I dont think carvin is misrepresenting anything
This was shot and recorded in Brendon's personal studio. I actually brought him a 2nd Legacy II head when we shot this. So he was plugged into the 2nd head that was straight from the Carvin factory - NO MODS.
As Brendon explained in the video, he had his cab in an isolation room and the only processing was the stereo delay plug-in he had set in Pro Tools.
@VintageburstStandard yeah but at this point i pretty much know what im doing, ive played over 8 years, and i get dream tone when i play nicer mesa boogie amps, i got amazing tone playing a mark v... but my legacy has always sounded bad, ill be selling it soon because im getting axe fx 2...

@jeep65248 I'd check the tubes. I personally connected up the amp in the video before we shot this. There was no other distortion pedal being used.

@jeep65248 LOL !!!!
Just watch our demo of the Legacy I with a guitar straight into the amp.

@jeep65248 Search for Legacy High Gain Straight Cable. You will find my video with even MORE distortion.
You should try changing your guitar or pickups.
