does the volume knob act more as a gain knob or a master volume knob? I'm thinking of getting it, but I don't want it to be extremely quiet clean, and then two loud cranked.
@MTLguitarist98 Its acts like both. Turing up the volume will distort the signal, but it will raise the volume, too. I think the only way to get those distorted sounds at low volumes is to use an attenuator.
i just picked up a used class 5 sounds awesome im in love with it but it dose rattle if anyone knows the fix please share with me and when i find out i will share as well.
@EPIGIBSONPHONE Its part of the standard three band eq found on most amps. Treble controls the high frequencies, Bass controls the low and middle controls the mid range frequencies. Mids are what makes an electric guitar cut through in a full band mix. More mids gives you a loose classic "British" sound and less mids gives you a tighter "American" tone. Too much mids can take away the edge of your guitar tone but too little will make it hard to be heard over cymbals.
@EPIGIBSONPHONE it gets rid of treble and provides a ear tickling sound some what like what what happen it you turn up the bass butt provides a better tone blues for me it makes your sond seem fulle
The Vox Ac4 watt has the best tone of the low-watters, but the Bugera V5 has the best bang for buck, with decent clean, reverb, tons of gain and the all-necessary HEADPHONE jack.
Marshall C5 is 3rd for the best distortion.
The Fender is 15w so it's in a totally different category.
Seeing this amp doesn't have a master volume, would something like a Xotic RC Booster or AC booster be used as a master volume to boost the db(volume) of the clean sounds????
@Chamopol No way, I mean you should try it at guitar center but in MY HONEST opinion you would be waaaaaaay better trying a Fender blues junior if you were going to try an electric guitar amp with an acoustic.
Sounds good but I can't get my head around amps like this. It's small like for home practice but has no master volume? I love playing at full volume and everything but I'm pretty sure my neighbors don't. Also headphones suck.
@lucradiste I had to crank mine really loud to get the gain I wanted, but then it'd be so loud I couldn't tell what I was playing and that pissed me off a little.
@Zimtack Hey, I have the Vox AC4TV, a somewhat similar amp (4 watt 1x10 combo with one 12AX7 in the preamp and one EL84 in the poweramp). At 4 watts my amp is def. loud enough in the practice room with your average drummer, although I only play rhythm guitar. Might need a clean boost or something similar for solos, and definitely need to mic up for the gig. 4 watts in a tube amp is a lot louder than you think. My amp hurts my ears if I stand right in front of it. Hope this helps! Good luck!
Again, the same exact type of guitar playing. Please (everyone) start posting different playing styles other than this outdated lead guitar crap. No more of this sh*t! It's getting so old hearing the same tunes on these demos.
Andy is the guitar hero of our generation of players. for one, he's a more than fantastic guitar player. two, he does reviews of anything and everything that guitar players want. and three, he knows EXACTLY what to play to bring out the absolute best of an amp, pedal or guitar. just wanna say thanks you Andy!!
Just a note of appreciation for your excellent reviews, using decent recording techniques. It's nice to hear the RANGE of tones, with different guitars, and actual playing, rather than just self-indulgent shredding at full volumes. You do a great job of showing what the amp is capable of, which is what a demo/review should be. Well done!
Hmm, trying to decide between this one and the tiny terror, which would you recomend? I mostly play Zeppelin, Purple, Thin lizzy + i must be able to play it with my drummer friend. I play a Les paul trad pro :)
@MrV1C7OR hello I am having to go through the same choise, I play a blues deluxe at a small gig and its too big, I was looking to buy a junior because I am a fender man, I never liked the marshall sound , ths only marshall I ever had was the 'Artist' combo of the mid 70's, the reviews of that amp said that it was not very good because it was too Fender de luxe sounding. I am blown away by this Class 5 and intend getting one to get one.
@Howardsend88 Thank you, I'm a Fender man too, whatever it's guitar or amp, and i've never had a Marshall amp because of its heavy sound. Well, i play distorted guitar, but i just don't like that "Marshall sound", maybe becouse i never played one, i don't know.
@MrV1C7OR blues Jr. Way better over all for the money. If you want a marshall, buy one; but buy a real one. Their jcm808, Jvm 410 and most of their tube amps are great amps. I've heard about this amp not being flexable. Pretty limited on tones.
@MrV1C7OR or you can go with line 6 spider 4 tube so basically every amp it models sounds exactly like the amp so you want a fender go to twang you want a vox go to crunch and so on if you have money to spare I always wanted to buy like 10 small amps for recording basically every budget friendly 30 watt amp I can find but good luck grab a line 6
@MrV1C7OR If you have the chance, play both. Then decide which one inspires you the most to play. I've played both and they are both awesome. Price wise, I'm probably gonna go with the class 5. I first gotta test to see how they handle stompboxes.
@MrV1C7OR Find out whether you like the difference between American or British voicing. They sound different from that respect and that's mostly preference. Additionally, do you want usable clean? The Marshall breaks up very quickly, especially with humbuckers while the blues jr has a bit more headroom.
@kittykiller897 dude this guy in my music tech class didnt even know what a tube amp was. i asked him what kind of amp he had and he didnt know the brand cause it was old and warn. so i said tube or solid state? his answer was what's the difference? i have never heard of a tube amp?
@kittykiller897 haha i know right i was once talking to a guitarist and he heard my amp before (custom built 5 watt plexi) and he was asking wich amp it was so i showed him and he said: ''it only has one channel and you don't have pedals'' and i was like never heard of TUBES
@spreepin it is ... i reccomend the limited edition white one guitar center sold ... theres a few in online sale right now ... its essentialy the same just a cooler look
I'm sorry for the noob question, but if I link it to a cab it will get louder? If it doesn't will it be loud enghough for smaller gigs if not mic'd up?
It will be using more speakers, which effectively pushes more air, which is basically the definition of "louder."
It won't increase output power or anything like that, but it'll be more easily heard. As for volume, if you don't want cleans, it's plenty loud enough. If you want cleans, you don't want a 5 watt amp.
@blackmorejimi The Class 5 has almost NO clean headroom. The Blackstar has more wattage, so it probably has more headroom. Another good amp to consider is the Fender Blues Jr. If you're looking for overdriven sounds at low volume, get the Marshall. Also, check out the Vox Ac30 and the Ibanez TSA15H.
You know the amp is sweet when you think for a second that he might be using a fuzz pedal, but you realize its just the guitar and amp feeding one another.
yeah, andy knows how to tweak the amp settings. most demos of this amp sound horrible because they turn up the bass all the way and the sound crumbles. nice tones... pgs is the best for amp demos!!
how do you dime this amp without blasting your ears out? I have demo'd this amp and it is a loud freakin 5 watts, is it the way you mic the amp that makes it sound so good, when I dimed it, she sounded muddy and like well sh*t. Do you roll your guitar volume back half way or something? Love your demo's,, everyone of them
hi, im kinda new to tubes and stuff....could you potentially swap out these tubes for lets say, 6L6's or whatever.....for a bit more agressive sound....if 6L6's are even more agressive, i thought they were xD tnx anyway
@NoName01071992 6L6/6V6 and EL34/EL84 all fit into different sockets, you would need adapters. And you would drastically change the wattage 6L6s are anywhere from 15-25 watts per tube.
Is this combo like most 5watt amps in the sense that the "volume" is really a gain control. I had a valve junior that the perceived volume was the same at 1 and at 10. Only distortion increased when the volume knob took a hard right.
Someone may have answered this already, but I'm looking for an amp that I can turn up high to get the good crunch and tone without the blistering volume, and with no headroom loss. Is this it? I tried the Egnater Rebel 20, but it was just way too loud. I guess I'm looking for tone and headroom. I can always just mike it through the PA if additional volume is necessary.
, i think the "a" chord to the "d" chord that you use might sound more correct if you don't play the "d" chord the way you do -play the "a"/chord as you do with the 1st finger only, and add the 2nd finger on the "d" note(2nd string-3rd fret) and simult.
add your 3rd finger on the F# (4th string-4th fret) and pick those two note back up as you go for the a/chord and back down for the d/chord, you get diff overtones this way -import-only play the middle strings mute both hi & low "E" :)
Hate to bug you, but seeing as how you have more access to more equipment I was hoping you could help. I like the idea behind a combo that can also power a half stack. However, I'm not a big fan of Marshall. Is there anything else on the market that has that option with a more cleaner sound?
@dutybugg - Any combo with an external speaker output of the proper Ohms can potentially be used with a 4x12 cab. There are innumerable combo amps that would fit the bill. For a cleaner sound you'll need more headroom, which means higher wattage. In general, the higher the wattage the more clean volume you'll have before the amp breaks up. Hope that helps. Thanks!
@ProGuitarShopDemos Blackstar HT-5 or Marshall Class5...which do you prefer and recommend? Im stuck as can be when it comes to this choice lol. Thanks if you can respond
@MOSKII58 Actually if you use the word simpleton it would better fit your egotistical personality. Simpleton starts with an S thats right next to your A key.
@MichaelGaard better look again thats exactly what i typed D-note (2nd string-3rd fret)..i don't know what point you trying to make everything i typed in my original comment stands as is and correct..unless you
play in your own tuning like" G" demented... 2nd string as in "B" string as in 2nd string going from the high "E" string if thats funny then you must come from another planet.
@MichaelGaard lmao that was my exact thought. This guy has a ton of videos with gear demonstration, playing some pretty bad ass stuff. But i guess this guy doesn't think he knows where the D note is... my d note is on the 5 fret of the A string... ahahaha.
@mitchpsychedelic there are a few that come close, try T-rex /Alberta, Mi audio/blues(the pedal w/ the fuzz switch), Full tone /ocd ,Hermida/Audio Zen drive I & Maxon 808..all these have great over-drive tones, but you know what they say about Marshall-only a Marshall sounds like a Marshall... also T-rex mudhoney & Moller
Yes, it is loud. I had mine modded to accept an attenuator using an added input jack along with the external speaker out - works perfect and when unplugged it just goes back to normal. Volume control was very much needed for my apartment. Set to 12 o'clock with a tube screamer type pedal (BB for me) cleanly pushing it pretty hard sounds great.
My new c5 has just arrived. Wow!! I am so impressed. Putting my Fender Tele through it. It sounds so so good. A real Marshall tube sound. I couldn't recommend it enough.
I'm not a fan of Marshall amps but I do think they are one of the best amps for high gain. I prefer Fender amps because of their clean tone. This particular amp sounds raw but distictive in that the sound is clearly pronounced as opposed to other high gain amps that lack clarity.
To me.....The Class 5 is a great "platform" amp to work with. I usually turn it up to about 3....and preamp it with an old Digitech RP-12 set on "Half Stack". I roll back on the volume for great touch sensative cleans, and crank it for strong and Vintage Overdrive sounds. It takes pedals extremely well, I boost with either a Marshall Guv'nor2 or even an MXR Doubleshot......It records well, and I have used it for numerous club gigs and rehearsals......Also have A '71 Superlead and a '87 JCM800

jackwarrenguitar 9 months ago
does the distortion come purely from the volume knob?
kingdong001 9 months ago
can this amp be hooked up straight to a pa with the output jack?
NintendoSinceBirth1 10 months ago
yeah, andy knows how to tweak the amp settings. most demos of this amp sound horrible because they turn up the bass all the way and the sound crumbles. nice tones... pgs is the best for amp demos!!
BlackBalloonGraz 10 months ago
how do you dime this amp without blasting your ears out? I have demo'd this amp and it is a loud freakin 5 watts, is it the way you mic the amp that makes it sound so good, when I dimed it, she sounded muddy and like well sh*t. Do you roll your guitar volume back half way or something? Love your demo's,, everyone of them
glassbottleblues 10 months ago
hi, im kinda new to tubes and stuff....could you potentially swap out these tubes for lets say, 6L6's or whatever.....for a bit more agressive sound....if 6L6's are even more agressive, i thought they were xD tnx anyway
NoName01071992 10 months ago
@NoName01071992 6L6/6V6 and EL34/EL84 all fit into different sockets, you would need adapters. And you would drastically change the wattage 6L6s are anywhere from 15-25 watts per tube.

Hello, i have a question. There is a problem if i run lets say a tiny terror or this class 5, thru a 120watts cabinet ?
radekxito 10 months ago
Is this loud enough to some jamming with drummer?
69Bloodsucker 10 months ago
anyone know if marshall plans on making a slightly more powerful version of this...say 15 to 20 watts??
creamz28 10 months ago
@creamz28 That's called the Blues Breaker
Fichtezxc 10 months ago
Is this combo like most 5watt amps in the sense that the "volume" is really a gain control. I had a valve junior that the perceived volume was the same at 1 and at 10. Only distortion increased when the volume knob took a hard right.
Sauerapple 10 months ago

@ProGuitarShopDemos
Hate to bug you, but seeing as how you have more access to more equipment I was hoping you could help. I like the idea behind a combo that can also power a half stack. However, I'm not a big fan of Marshall. Is there anything else on the market that has that option with a more cleaner sound?
dutybugg 10 months ago
@dutybugg - Any combo with an external speaker output of the proper Ohms can potentially be used with a 4x12 cab. There are innumerable combo amps that would fit the bill. For a cleaner sound you'll need more headroom, which means higher wattage. In general, the higher the wattage the more clean volume you'll have before the amp breaks up. Hope that helps. Thanks!

MOSKII58 10 months ago
@MOSKII58 Actually if you use the word simpleton it would better fit your egotistical personality. Simpleton starts with an S thats right next to your A key.

@MOSKII58 Love when rookie's try to impress with their AWESOME knowledge.
"The D-note (thats the 2nd string - 3rd fret"
LOL!!!!
MichaelGaard 10 months ago
@MichaelGaard better look again thats exactly what i typed D-note (2nd string-3rd fret)..i don't know what point you trying to make everything i typed in my original comment stands as is and correct..unless you
play in your own tuning like" G" demented... 2nd string as in "B" string as in 2nd string going from the high "E" string if thats funny then you must come from another planet.
MOSKII58 10 months ago
@MichaelGaard lmao that was my exact thought. This guy has a ton of videos with gear demonstration, playing some pretty bad ass stuff. But i guess this guy doesn't think he knows where the D note is... my d note is on the 5 fret of the A string... ahahaha.

Fersagen 10 months ago
Is there maybe a pedal that gets you the same drive sound, or something close to it
mitchpsychedelic 11 months ago
@mitchpsychedelic there are a few that come close, try T-rex /Alberta, Mi audio/blues(the pedal w/ the fuzz switch), Full tone /ocd ,Hermida/Audio Zen drive I & Maxon 808..all these have great over-drive tones, but you know what they say about Marshall-only a Marshall sounds like a Marshall... also T-rex mudhoney & Moller
have some o/d sounds worth checking out..
MOSKII58 10 months ago
@MOSKII58 dude, you even got PGS Andy to insult you, impressive man.

That Strat sounds sweet with this amp.
gigicalifornia 11 months ago
Yes, it is loud. I had mine modded to accept an attenuator using an added input jack along with the external speaker out - works perfect and when unplugged it just goes back to normal. Volume control was very much needed for my apartment. Set to 12 o'clock with a tube screamer type pedal (BB for me) cleanly pushing it pretty hard sounds great.
noslen1968 11 months ago
it would be great if you would write the titles of the songs you play under the video

EvanN108 11 months ago
I'm not a fan of Marshall amps but I do think they are one of the best amps for high gain. I prefer Fender amps because of their clean tone. This particular amp sounds raw but distictive in that the sound is clearly pronounced as opposed to other high gain amps that lack clarity.

Since there is no effects loop, it is ok to add effect pedals?

To me.....The Class 5 is a great "platform" amp to work with. I usually turn it up to about 3....and preamp it with an old Digitech RP-12 set on "Half Stack". I roll back on the volume for great touch sensative cleans, and crank it for strong and Vintage Overdrive sounds. It takes pedals extremely well, I boost with either a Marshall Guv'nor2 or even an MXR Doubleshot......It records well, and I have used it for numerous club gigs and rehearsals......Also have A '71 Superlead and a '87 JCM800
