  • I went Anti-Glare. It's all about preference. I love it. I'll never go back. I like my Sony television because it's anti-glare as well.

  • Colours that "pop" is not an advantage if your hobby is photo or you work on graphics.

I just so hate Apple for not selling an affordable desktop computer (and asking $200 for a MBP) with matte screen. There is no option on the iMac. You have to buy a Mac Pro and a frikin' regular matte screen if you want one.

I've used new iMac (with glossy scr) and I get headaches very fast and my eyes get tired in about 10 minutes.

APPLE, we don't want a shiny computer. We want an useful one for productivity.

  • Hitler on Matte vs Glossy macs. you tube /watch?v=nZhuoIduUt4

  • Now this is insane, but if Apple has NOT listened to there product users on this issue... LISTEN UP! Charge a little extra for the Matte screen option, people will pay a bit more for a professional screen. I know (and we all know I am not alone) if I had an option between an amateur kiddy glossy mirror monitor that I can count my nose hairs in VS a Matte pro option monitor for people who ACTUALLY use there computers for more than 45 minutes a day.... you could increase sales! PERIOD!

  • Blacks are richer on the glossy, but I'm sick of seeing my or anything else's reflection in every black on the screen.

  • Scrap the diplomacy act. Take your macbook pro outside and then try and tell us there is no difference. I have had both and deeply regret the glossy display. Your video does not deal with the issue in a scientific manner, your video seems like a poor excuse to getting air time on U-tube.

  • The glossy display is different: it has an aluminium rail. So a glossy display is easier to clean because there is not that edge.

  • Very nice. I'm getting a glossy MBP soon and this helped.

  • God he's come such a long way

  • See the bettervidos comparing the two.

  • nice shirt jon! Where did u buy it? :)

  • Comment removed

  • Why is it SO DIFFICULT to believe that when you are outdoors with your glossy screen you don't see reflections? COME ON, GET SERIOUS! You may be in love with your screen... remember lovers don't see faults in their loved ones? ;)

  • Glossy are fake colors, over-saturated. Real colors are on the mat!

  • I had ordered a MBP glossy screen after looking at both at apple store! but then I Cancelled it today and feeling lucky! Believe me I was all for Glossy/gorgeous screens and thats why I ordered in first place, but today I saw the Glossy at Best Buy and Boy! I could not look at the screen for more than few mins, my eyesight is fine, but the glossy screen has lot of eye strain!! Using indoor outdoor is not the point here, Glossy screen has lot of eye strain for use over an hour!!

  • @sachin101178 - I used sandpaper on my brother's mac, it took some shine off and hey, just a little detail, but it'll do his eyes good.

  • @sachin101178 The matte screen makes such a huge difference in comparison to the glossy screen. I had a 15 inch Macbook pro glossy screen for 3 months and I finally made the decision to sell it. Sold it within 2 days and ordered the matte screen option with the higher resolution. At first it's kind of hard getting used to the smaller font, but after using it for a few days I got used to it so it's a huge difference and so much better.

  • @JSantana319 : Glad you did.Matt is a much better and sophisticated option. All stories of color wash out is just not true.A gloss Screen is a Mirror, so everything will shines out of propotion, which you don't want. Matt screens are exquisite! They charge more money for Matt for a reason.

  • @sachin101178 Thanks a lot. This is the best investment I've ever made besides my very first Mac which was a 15 inch Antiglare Macbook Pro as well which I tragically and accidentally dropped and bent the side where the super drive was located at. The silver bezel on the new one looks really nice and now I can't even look at the 1440x900 resolution 15 inch anymore, lol. 1680x1050 makes a superb difference :)

  • im going with matte cause it dousnt hurt my eyes ;) but glossy just looks freakin beautiful but matte is better for your eyes xD

  • And for all those noobs saying "aww it hurts my eyes" actually because glossy offers brighter colours, it is more healthy to look at over longer periods than matte

  • Colour is amasing on glossy.

I swear most human beings don't use they're laptops in sunlight. It's not good for it anyway.

  • @Paulwander lol a window behind you is enough for a glossy screen to fuck it up ..

  • Seriously, How can ANYONE love a shiny screen... unless you are a BLOND PINUP in love with yourself and your image... that you will be looking at every second when you are working on your computer!

  • A glossy screen in low light, looks great. Matte screen looks pixelated even in HD.

  • Pro tip: buy matte MBP with a glossy Monitor for inside

  • @LoliciousXD Master of Pro tip: buy 2 MBP one glossy one matte

  • @SamusViolance yeah, only works if you shit out money derp

  • @LoliciousXD same to you :) macnoob :P

  • @SamusViolance correction, I hand built my computers, plus there is nothing wrong with thinking that the MBP is a good laptop which in all actuality it is.

  • @LoliciousXD correction, then buy two. then there is nothing wrong with buying 2

  • @SamusViolance that would be stupid when there is a simpler and cheaper solution

  • this video was made 2 years ago...i wonder if original poster still feels the same way about glossy screens...i hear it's fine at first but something that slowly drives you crazy

  • @fiercex It is!

I have a glossy Dell studio XPS 16. In little or no light it's epic. When it's in the light, like when I was trying to enjoy the sun today, I can't see a thing. NOT A THING!

I'm hoping I can save up to get a MacPro soon - Maybe, I've always been a Windows sort of guy.

After the experience with my Dell's glossy screen, I'll be going for matte. If it where a monitor at home I'd go for glossy, but not for a laptop.

  • i intern at a graphic design firm and all their computers are glossy macs. SUCK IT BITCHES, GLOSSY RULES

  • all the professional use glossy screen? you make me laugh, you know what? try to find a glossy monitor in eizo or lacie pro monitors and then we can talk to you

  • That happens to me a lot n my iMac 21.5 inch screen it bugs the poo out of me! 

  • Glossy rocks. People who uses matt are just jealous shit

  •  glossy is the best 

  • glossy or matte its your choice but glossy is not shit it is very bright and colors pop out beautifully

  • 0:45 Eye strain doesn't always occur instantaneously. The difficulty will come after months of repeated usage. A laptop is meant to be portable, the gloss screen is a glorified rear view mirror with any sunlight around. As your car has tyres which work in most conditions, so should your laptop's screen. Having the gloss is OK at home but at college when you can't play around with the lights or reorientate, it is impossible to look at.

I returned my gloss screen and went antiglare.

  • My eyes are sensative to light so does that mean i should go with glossy or matte? And is the color thing that dramatic or are ppl just bitching aboit it? I need help.

  • @venskus2009

    GLOSSY IS TOTAL SHIT!

THIS GUY IS RETRDED,BLIND OR WORKS FOR MAC

YOU DEFINITLY NEED TO USE MATTE SCREENS

  • stupid ! why do you think all the professional use glossy screen ? and why do they use macbook pro ? because it's a lot better !

  • you retarded fak no prefesional would use glossy shit

    stap spaming retarded faget

  • Im a professional (photographer, musician, systems administrator, and programmer). I cant stand glossy for a number of reasons. Your statement is false.

  • @TheRealGothAlice how can an opinion be "false"

  • I like shiny things. I drive black cars & love the shine. But not on my laptop. I bought a MBP15, a/g screen. I compared both side by side. Both are beautiful, but the glossy was too glossy. I LUV my a/g screen. Yet I still wonder if I should have went glossy. Had I went glossy, I would have wondered if I should have gotten the a/g. We're never happy & are always looking for something better when in reality, either works. It is a matter of personal preference & you can't go wrong with either.

  • dude. you remind me of eric from "that 70's show"

  • glossy is abit of a reflective pain w/ a 40" ~ picture quality ~ seems the holy grail ~ though

  • THERE IS GLARE. Glossy monitor is like a mirror only not as senitive to light as mirror. The reason YOU dont see any GLARE is because your eyes are adapting to see the image behind the GLARE. Your eyes are working extra hard to adapt. In conclusion if you want healthy eyes, do not get glare monitors or you eyes will get fucked.

  • This is why we have laser eye surgery and opticians.

  • when i get my macbook pro im getting the anti glare thing is it good

  • The glossy screen is NICE and i love the colors BUT, if you need to print alot and want the screen colors to be exactly the same as the print colors, you definately need the Matte screen.

  • Can somebody tell what is the matte screen??

  • @markomaric2 Matte screen does not reflect light like the glossy screen and in this particular video, if you watch the whole video, even the subject admits to the lack of reflection outside. If you are more happy with reflection and finger marks, than gloss is your baby.

  • you sound like eric foreman from that 70's show

  • haha yeh cept eric over exagerates.. egagerates azzagerates? i hope thats how you spell it lol!

  • Glossy isn't really that bad... The only thing that I don't like about it is the fact that screen is a HUGE fingerprint magnet. If it used the same glass as the 3GS then It would be SWEET!

  • i hate glossy. i think it's awful.

  • Well that's not a very well thought out response. The only thing the matte has over glossy is glare and, in my case fingerprints. Color accuracy can easily be fixed with software, so that shouldn't be used as an argument.

Even after all of that I do prefer matte over glossy. (I would have gotten the matte but it came out 3 days after I bought my computer. I was PO'd) Fingerprints are NASTY. And why did you reply to a 3 month old comment?

  • @criox12 Um...no. Glossy is the friggin bane of accurate color calibration on a viewing device.

  • My uncle doesn't have any problems with color accuracy on his brand new 13" MBP... It took him a while to get it just right but it's just about as accurate as his 30" apple cinema display.

  • Glossy screens are ridiculous, it's just like a mirror, sure they look shiny and awesome in the store but if you use them for over an hour they FUCK YOUR EYES

  • @dhgjas well actually glossy is more dark than antiglare and antiglare.removes most of reflections but has less darkness....so it is up to you )))

  • @dhgjas lmao too true..too fkin* true

  • @dhgjas

    no they dont.?

  • @dhgjas glossy screens are crisper, brighter, and better looking in general. glossy screens don't "FUCK YOUR EYES', however, they are for people who don't work outisde

  • How can a screen that reflects unwanted light back into the eyes be better? Its so ridiculous that Apple would not make matte an option no the 13 inch MBP or the Mac Air. The glossy screens are horrible on the eyes in the long run for sure....I bought a 13 inch from bestbuy and returned with it the speed of light! What a shame for a product engineering to perfection in every other way except the GLOSSY!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I agree with you, but if you don't set the brightness all the way up on the glossy it won't affect you that much. I use a glossy screen and I only have it two bars more than halfway so to me is perfect especially for HD movies and videos. The matte is great too for professional photography.

  • @JSantana319 Magic words, "won't affect you THAT much".

  • it's so weird i have no problems with glossy screens...

  • It is!

  • Me neither. The problem is that some people put the brightness all the way up and that's not good for the glossy screen.

  • Im all for MATTE. Whenever I see a glossy screen I cant see shit. There are way too many reflections.

  • the glossy on the new unibodys is really good for movies, but horrible for any rooms w/ sun coming in from windows. I hope apple will have a matte opion on the 15" at the june conference.

matte's also good for photo and video editing.

  • That's what I'm hoping for too...wish they had the matte option on the 15"

  • Glossy is better but you can't get shit done.

  • can we please have a video of a side by side on the two screens, instead of this pointless speculation

  • I know thats what I want!

  • @qwertisdirty why dont you get off your ass and look for yourself

  • @qwertisdirty Agreed... what a stupid video... what compels someone to make something like this?

  • I have a 15.4 2.53 macbook pro unibody with glossy screen and i have to say that the display is the best i have ever seen in a laptop. It is really great. No problem at all with reflections inside home and office although I haven' use it yet outside to tell you about it.

  • Matte ftw - but glossy is is awesome when watching videos at night :)

  • you only have the option of getting a matte screen on the 17" macbook pro, not the 15"

    nice work apple

  • I myself i am a pasionated designer and i choose matte!

I will tell you why. Glossy good for people watching videos, clips, pictures, graphics and so on, but only at home and on places with no directly light! Matte is good for people who produce those videos, clips, pictures, graphics and so on, and those on the glossy screen will rejoice. So its difficult to design corectly on a glossy and could get also some errors and pain of your eyes, and you can't design everywere, thats why, greetz

  • agreed. furthermore, glossy doesn't show true colors. contrast is too high. dark grey on a matte shows up black on a glossy. and off white on a matte shows up white on a glossy.

  • Reflection is the bad thing in glossy....

  • glossy = glare glare glare. hate it! color is fine on matte

  • (...and another thing;-) Like you I spent much time going back & forth...going to be looking into the screen a LOT so it has to be right! Different product lines' displays are usually different quality too--like MBP & glary iMac (huge glare)!

VERY WEIRD is that HP's new HDX 16" & 18.4" displays are NOT the same higher quality as their 20" HDX Dragon I mentioned before, tho ALL are called ULTRA BrightView (crazy).

You're an xlnt communicator btw & there's a strong sense of fairness about you.

  • VALID POINT, JOHN... I had HP's best display (ULTRA BrightView on 20" Dragon) which was high-gloss yet I could view it under mid-day sunlight & NO GLARE (or tiny bit). Other technologies involved in display quality such as # of lamps, LED or not, color gamut, light diffusion, etc. Can't oversimplify by saying all glossies or mattes are completely one way OR another--there really are big diffs! Plus, as you point out, our eyes perceive things differently & how we use laptops also varies.

  • you are cute

  • glossy screens are a pain in the eyes! dont get it! protest against apple for matte screens! :)

  • I found a matte more painfull for the eyes, ok it's a personal thing, on glossy there's a reflection that I've never seen except on pure black images, matte screens leave also prints and co that can confuse while working on graphic things... photos look just better on glossy.

For a portable I'd use a matte! at home better a glossy.

  • it does create eyestrain, mirrors everything, its simply an expensive mirror, home depot has better and cheaper mirrors. there is a reason why you don't show it in this video.

  • color pops out? that's pretty cool then, but not for professionals. I'm a photographer, and I'm never gonna edit my photos on a glossy screen !! it's true, it gorgeous, but the colors are messed up.

Thanx a bunch apple for selling glossy only!

  • i'm not looking for a mac, but i just wanted to see what some people's opinions were on glossy vs. matte. personally i would go with matte, but i barely see any in the store

  • Isn't it pronounced "Matae"?

  • No.

  • the only thing that sucks about glossy screans is the finger prints if you get a finger prink it sucks the reg. matte screens dont show the rich colour like the glossy.

  • I have a macbook pro i bought luike in april and i chose matte.

I compare it with my sister's macbook with a glossy screen and it's jsut a little bit brighter. You can barely tell if it's has really bright colors on both screen.

but if it's like purple then matte is like barely darker.

  • Okay, I'll say this once. Most people do not know. I own a Macbook Pro, and I chose matte. This is why: matte is better for games, and animations are much better on a matte screen. I did some research. As for glossy, it may seem brighter, easier to clean, but it's more for vivid colors, photographs, stills, etc... If you are a gamer, buy the matte screen. The glossy will work, too, but much less strain on the eyes after four hours of Tombraider: Anniversary.

  • Thanks..I was wavering between both also but in the end decided to go for the glossy as well due to the absolutely vivid colors vs the matte..

  • thanks for making this video

iwont to buy a macbook pro vere vere soon but idont know glossy or matte

Pleas tel my what i buy

    glossy or matte

  • he already told you, try listening

  • thanks for making this video.

im buying a macbook pro soon and i really needed some personal opinions on matte or glossy.

im goin for glossy by the way

  • yeah same here

  • My MBP is also glossy and I love it.

  • VMWARE is not fine for running games, It creates virtual hardware which runs paritally off your real hardware. Which is why it has its own drivers, which obviously wouldnt word for your REAL hardware. For games, DUal boot

  • MATTE is the way to go. It's the most versatile and true to color. The color reproduction in the matte is much more accurate and not over-saturated like the glossy. I take my MBP everywhere i go - outside, in classrooms, and the matte screen is rich and vivid and there is no distracting reflection unlike the glossy screen. but REALLY: matte or glossy it depends on what you are using your mbp for.

  • I went with the matte display for my MB pro and i've got to say, it looks stunning. No reflection, rich, vivid colors and a bright screen. Yum.

  • Which would be the best for playing games?

  • a pc since mac doesn't support alot of games

  • Just run Windows in Fusion or Boot Camp

  • boot camp is much more beter....

  • And more proper.

  • If you have a fast Mac VM is fine... The new Penryn macbook pros run VM extremely well!!!

  • Glossy....

  • A GAMES CONSOLE!

  • well, at this point the only reason I'm still wondering which to pick is because I've never worked on an Apple product with a matte screen yet. either way, I tend to put quite a bit of stock in your opinions on Apple products, so thanks for the suggestion!

  • when you go yo the apple store or best buy do they tell you "here this one is glossy and this one is matte" Or can you only pick when you purchase it online at the online apple store?

  • Whats better to the eyes? glossy has a lot of glare

  • I'm sort of wondering what to go with. I wanted glossy, but I was stupid enough to forget about that choice when making my order - which is why right now matte is on its way... Wonder if I should exchange it... hmmm...

  • I thought I wouldn't like glossy but for normal use it is very good. It doesn't reflect and the colors are very deep. Nice Video :)

  • ure so cute, i use glossy MBP too!

  • i use matte, but i hear much awesomeness about glossy, which is why im getting a macbook soon

  • matte ftw... :D

  • thanks for the vid

  • Glad they helped

  • thank you ur movies help. im getting a macbook soon and these movies are helping

  • I have a MBP Santa Rosa 15 inch matte, and I am very happy with teh matte display. I think the matte display is geared to the more professional line, because if you look at the Cinema Display's made by Apple, they are matte, and other video editing professionals whom I have asked, say that matte has better performance, and gives better color view.

  • Idiot, professional also means possibility of giving conferences or presenting projects, etc. That means you need your public to see from multiple angles.. IDIOT

  • Idiot, professionals display their computer projects via a digital projection.. IDIOT

  • It has NOTHINGto do with professionals. It's a personal chioce plain and simple. Neither one will make your game FPS any faster then the other and it's up to your own eyes which has the better picture.

I prefer glossy cause the colours are much richer, others matte cause the pictures sharper etc.

  • Oh, THATS where you were coming from. Crap. Sorry dude. Big apos. I like matte, I really hate reflections. I work with Final Cut Express and I am crazy about detail.

  • So you have the shrper looking screen as in your eyes it looks better. The glossy screen doesn't give reflections all the time as your making out. More then the matte screen yes but in my eyes the colours are so much better on the glossy screen.

If the new Mac display's use glass like the iMac it'll be interesting to see if they reflect.

  • Well, my brother owns a MacBook and I just don't like the reflections, but yes, it will be interesting if Apple starts to use glass as a new standard.

  • so do you have to order it from apple speicifcly to get a glossy screen or do they have different macs at like a store like bestbuy

  • they should have both

  • Hey man, cool video. Also good advice! Since you're obviously into Apple, I'll subscribe to you. :)

  • Hi Jon,

Can you tell me, how can you tell the differene between the glossy screen and the normal screen? How do you know if you have the correct one you brought?

  • the glossy is shiny, the matte is not

  • Thanks Jon. I'll remember that as I've heard some people get the wrong type of screen to the one they ordered. Keep up the good work.

  • too bad i just bought the 17" macbook pro with matte screen :S... By the way i hope to see some HD video editing/rendering and memory consumption. Maybe an idea for your next video?

  • your only going to see glare when the screen is black and with the backlight off i know cos ive gotta glossy macbook

  • Good videos. I want a Macbook pro and want to ask, is the official Mac memory any better then the Kingston memory Mac supply websites sell? It's just I want 4GB and the Kingston memory is half the price!!

  • if it is compatible, there really is no difference. Apple makes a on of money on overpriced RAM.

  • Thanks buddy. I'll watch with interest to see what make you choose and what happens once you put it in.

  • Thanx Jon

  • Your forgetting the fact that the glossy screen makes you see colour richness that isn't actually there. If your a video editor and you need precise colour, the matte is for you. If you go with the glossy screen you /are/ seeing texture that isn't going to be there necessarily on a T.V. screen or a normal computer screen. Great video!

  • I agree with all the positive things you said on your glossy screen. I have a glossy MacBook. It's great. :)

  • Thanks once again Jon for the great video, you're such a genuine guy!

I think you should do a video demonstrating how to use Garageband, haha! =D Lets see your skills!

  • Thanks man....i suck at garageband, thats why you guys haven't seen it !

  • matte is recommended for designers because it is closer to the final product of what you are working on

glossy is recommended for websurfers and people watching videos/movies

i will be doing both but chose glossy because it is just beautiful, so i thought it was worth it, plus with an external monitor you can see it in matte anyway so i'll just edit on my 19" monitor

  • I went with Matte because its easier to clean and when you have a dirty screen [in my opinion] it shows up more on the glossy screen than the matte screen. That is just my personal opinion. My iBook G4 had a matte screen and I loved it. No problems with the color what so ever. lol =]

  • Thanks so much, this has really helped my decision.

  • Nice video that should help me make my choose of what kind of screen I wont to get one my MacBook Pro that I will be getting in September! Thanks! :)

  • I made my decision to go glossy way back when Apple first introduced the MacBook Pros. So that's what I decided to go with when I finally purchased mine at the end of last month. I really like the glossy because as you said, colors just look better.

I guess the glossy option was just incredibly popular on the MacBooks because the option to get matte didn't last for long.

  • heh, i was asking for that!

  • Whoa..look at that shrunken head! JK JK! Good video as always. lol

  • Hmm, looks the same as in all your other videos (not small) IMHO.

  • my head looks tiny in this video :(

  • noooo second

  • yesss first comment do nokian5 v iphone
