  • I had a 36" Sanyo that did this - the flyback has a crack that can't be fixed.... you can find new flyback replacements online for $15-30....

  • looks like a FRYback

  • Is it supposed to do that?

  • Bad insulation in the FBT, allowing the high voltage to arc to the grounded metal shield.

Either patch the flyback with insulation, such as silicone elastomer as suggested by "arcade80s" or replace it.

  • I have a 32" toshiba that sat for 5 months since getting a flat screen. Decided to plug it in the bedroom, and it took forever for the picture to focus. Had a strong ozone smell. took back off, and noticed the transformer and anode wire had a purplish glow.

I had some spark plug wire insulating spray/waterproofer. Sprayed the crap out of both the flyback and wire.

4 months later, sharp focused picture/no ozone smell.

Of course, it wasn't nearly as bad as this video.

  • i have saved many ehts like that. pull away the metal sheild then clean down the eht around the focus pot by removing all the carbon and dust deposits. then seal with silastic and let it set. really you have nothing to loose:) the success rate i have on arcade monitors is about 8/10 .

  • Flyback's kaput.

  • seems like something is wrong with it :p
