I'm a Deadhead, and I hate Obama! I'm right about politics. So, I like to think that The Dead isn't a band that makes bad political decisions such as this one. If you're an artist, you don't get more fans by lecturing people on who they should vote for. Ted Nugent was lucky to get a good outcome when he talked about politics. Well, then again, it could be because Ted's always right.
How sad! The dead used to be anti-establishment. Now the "other ones" are nothing but THE establishment by supporting all of Obama's BS! Don't believe the media. Obama is not a trust-worthy person! too bad about the demons that man held, no doubt no one could handle them alone and survive. I just finished Blair Jackson's "An American Life", that book seems to tell the best story of the heartache, for some of us that I've read over the 13 years past! I just do not agree that we all fit into a peg, just like the generalizations;"hes a deadhead=democrat"..or.."she's an NRA member=republican". Do not tell me how to vote, do not take that away.
There's one thing I must agree with you: Blair Jackson's book is the best I've ever read about Jerry and/or the Dead. This one and Robert Greenfield's "Dark Star - An Oral Biography of Jerry Garcia".
If I'm interpreting what you're saying correctly; if you watch an early interview of the dead, they mention that they never wrote protest tunes because the more you fight back, the bigger war you will create. I have nothing wrong with this, but advertising politicians was never what the Grateful Dead was about.
McCain acted first but suffered several false starts. On Monday, he declared that "the fundamentals of our economy are strong." On Tuesday, he said that the economy, while strong, was in "crisis" and that he opposed a federal bailout of insurance giant AIG. On Wednesday, after the federal government announced that it would take over AIG, he said the action was unavoidable.
Even Hurricane Gustav, which swept across the Gulf Coast three weeks ago, brought different responses. McCain detoured to Mississippi to tour the state's Emergency Management Agency; Obama stayed away, saying a sudden visit might "draw resources away from folks on the ground."
When Russian troops invaded neighboring Georgia last month, McCain immediately denounced Russia and demanded a withdrawal. "We are all Georgians," he declared. Obama urged both sides to show restraint and did not initially condemn the Russian action -- although he later issued a statement chiding Russia.
Sen. McCain (R-Ariz.) heatedly called on the Federal Reserve to stop bailing out big financial firms, proposed a new agency to "fix them before they become insolvent," and vowed to stamp out "corruption and unbridled greed" on Wall Street.
Sen. Obama (D-Ill.) announced that he had decided not to issue a financial rescue plan -- because he wanted to give the Bush administration a chance to work out a bipartisan solution without political interference.
The choice between John McCain and Barack Obama is not only between contrasting parties and policies; it's also between two markedly different styles of leadership. Those contrasts were sharply evident Friday as the presidential candidates sought to show how they would lead the nation through its latest harrowing financial crisis.
WASHINGTON — One is hot, the other cool. One is a man of quick action, the other a man of abiding caution. One claims the role of national maverick; the other hopes to play the role of national mediator.
You must be high if you think Jerry turned christian. Unfortunately for us all, Jerry thought his savior was a white powder that he couldn't kick. But the rest of the guys got it right. They should use the power for good, not some white haired evil.
Who remembers the way Jerry looked at the other Boyz in 1994 on ABC's In Concert program, when they tried to go political and hock this political bullshit. Why don't you all just roast Jerry for turning Christian and accepting Jesus Christ as his personal savior. You fucking idiots are all the same. Interject your politics into the Dead so it can persuade people into thinking the band was some political entity. Screw off Bob, Phil, and Mickey. Where's Billy? Swimming coral..
Republicans really can't be deadheads. It's just a different plane. They just can't understand the real message. I"m not talkin about Ron Paul republicans here.
Cheney is trying his damndest in Kiev this week pushing his NATO shit to get the world on the brink of the apocalypse - he underestimated the stupdity of Americans to fall for McCain's little tricks here at home. McCain may not need the Cold War with Russia to get elected. Hunter was such a prophet - Blues for Allah has it all in there.
everyone seems to be harping on them for this...Bottom line is that there's no chance in hell Ron Paul would be elected. Obama is the lesser of two evils, you must admit this. Would you rather see McCain win? Thought so.
I agree, anyone who truly believes in freedom will support a candidate who is an advocate of the constitution, neither mccain nor obama fill those shoes.

Obama what a joke this guy is. He whats to buddy up to Ahmedinejad. He said that he never knew that his pastor was saying racist things and his wife saying she was never proud to be an American before. Some Deadheads condemn white racist, but give Obama and his crew a free pass, black racist are every bit as wrong. Some Deadheads need to get their politically correct heads out of their asses. Obama Left wing equivalent to George Bush. You guys could have had Hillary who is far better.
Sell out what? ohh yeah there bringing in bundles of cash off this one ... ?
Its the fact that right now its pretty simple, McCain or Obama, neither is perfect but one is clearly better in my eyes, you may give deadheads(hippies) crap for getting evolved in politics but i see this coming down to the fact that you either want the war to end and the bullshit gone or you are still brainwashed from the bush admin. that there is a terrorist threat out there.
I wish they had done like Frank Zappa, who urged his fans to register and vote, without telling them what to vote. That's up to you alone. If you love the GD and want to vote for McCain, you do so, of course. This is like being instructive, and many people don't like that. Anyhow, it's great to see the guys, as always.
Think the Dead ever were "apolitical"? Pleeeeze. Remember the Rainforest Benefit? Remember SEVA? Remeber the Mime Troupe Benefits? Remember Bobby and Mickey on Letterman encouraging everyone to vote for Gore? Remember Dylan and the Dead doing "Masters of War"? Remember a guy named Garcia playing all over the Airplane's "Volunteers?" C'mon. And Bobby, Phil & Mickey sure ain't apolitical now, either. Get real.
DEADHEADS 4 OBAMA ARE NOT DEADHEADS THEY ARE FANS OF THE BAND YOU CANT BE A DEADHEAD AND INDULGE IN THIS OBAMA CRAP THE DEAD IS A PLACE TO ESCAPE FROM THIS POLITICAL CRAP. "IF YOU GET CONFUSED LISTEN TO THE MUSIC PLAY" SIMPLE AS THAT. THIS DEADHEADS 4 OBAMA CRAP IS DISCRACEFUL. If jerry was still alive he would NOT b part of this Obama crap I SAY AGAIN "DEADHEADS 4 OBAMA ARE NOT DEADHEADS. DEADHEADS ESCAPE FROM THE PROBLEM NOT INDULGE IN IT"
I agree that Jerry would not be a part of this crap which is what this is. Phil, Mickey and Bob can do what they like but I certainly don't support their decision.
I realize the savage and twisted times we live in. When the stress of life hits me, I could always depend on taking a drive and putting on some live Dead. I found this "fountain of forget it" at Englishtown, NJ for the 1st time. It was about fun, not politics. It was about enjoying music and escaping serious bullshit. Again I say it was about fun, about our own personal thing we had. We were all strangers meeting strangers just to shake their hand. There are other channels, don't soil perfection
Maybe Jerry wouldn't endorse a candidate, and maybe he would. He's not here, so it's hard to say. I think the surviving members of the band have different sensibilities than they did when they were young. They are fathers and grandfathers, they are facing mortality more immanently, and they have seen a lot of the carnage of the past half century. It's fine and grand to be in a band and be aloof from the events of the day, but these guys feel a sense of responsibility. Obama may not be perfect...
NEVER would Jerry hop on board to endorse this or any politician! The Grateful Dead never made a stance on the Vietnam War, I admire them for that. I have one question on this endorsement. Did you research all of your candidates??? If you did HOW in the world could you not endorse Ron Paul who stands for much of the political stances of the Dead and deadheads??? dem or rep wolves in sheep clothing!! I believe Jerry Garcia would not endorse any candidate. That was not/would not be Jerry Garcia
I could not agree more!!! Although the Dead were always a team effort, Jerry was not the type to intentionally influence people. He know how powerful he and the Dead had become and was afraid of that, now imagine how many people will vote for Obama just becuase of the "Deadheads for Obama" movement.
You're so right. I saw a interview speaking about the fact he could not even mention the name of a book he was reading because so many would run out and buy so many making it a bestseller and then worst of all be viewed as bible for jerry garcia. Just as you said he did not want that influence or responsibility.
Last time I checked Jerry wasn't the only member of the Dead. And Jerry ISN'T endorsing him, I don't think the dead should have to obey to what Jerry would want just because he was in the band. You didn't complain when the Dead did reunion tours without Jerry, were you?
mickey hart seemed to explain this behaviour when he said: "these are desperate times and we are desperate people."
i think he doesnt agree with this political propaganda, however he must take desperate decisions to help people
i dnt think he`s right because the way they are triyng to do things is almost taking from the people the choice to vote. it is as though they were saying: "if you are with us, then vote on obama. if you vote on bush, you are not one of us"
I'm thrilled to see Bobby, Phil and Mickey endorse Obama!! I believe that if Jerry were still here, he'd throw in with the rest of the guys on this one, despite his general policy of not endorsing political candidates, and here's why: as Bobby said, this is a pivotal moment not only in the history of this country but of the WORLD. If we're ever gonna have a world wherein brotherhood and spiritual principals rule instead of greed and money, this is our best chance for the beginning of it!!
Obama is a fraud. This guy is looking to be a disappointment for all the sheep that are blindly believing his "hope and change" bulls*t. Seriously...what has he done?? He has almost zero qualifications or acomplishments. He got elected to the senate running against a fill in opponesnt ( Alan Keyes) who was talked into running by the GOP in Illinois. He is a fraud.
come on , they are trying to help the world. they even said they havent seen anyone this promising in YEARS. and i just heard him say this is their first endorsement of a specific candidate, so it is probably going to be their last, unless obama loses and runs aagain in 4 yrs etc....
if they think they can help the world, LET THE<. Thats all I have to say.
To quote a phrase "Shut up and sing". Obama is a joke. The Dead were political by their very existence. They were however refreshing in their lack of overt political statements and endorsments. Since then we've seen band members endorse Clinton,Gore,Kerry, Boxer, Pelosi and now BHO. It is sad. Just make some good music.
mickey didn't want it to be phil's idea. mickey thought of it too! seems like they call each other brothers when they are really annoyed by each other.
we always pick the popular person the person who inspires and speaks to the heart BUT lets be honest that is not the qualitys we need in our leaders we need someone who can lead and govern and deligate to get things done yes I know it's boring talking details and real action BUT thats what we need. please lets not make the same mistake we've always made !
Seeing these guys stump for a political candidate is disappointing. It's one thing for them to stand up for a cause which is something the Grateful Dead did frequently. But political endorsements by the band marks a sad day for Deadheads.
Jerry never endorsed politicians in his lifetime as an artist, however, he was very committed to the principle of peace and he would certainly be against the War in Iraq. As the only viable candidate who spoke openly about his opposition to invading Iraq, Barak Obama earned the endorsement by The Dead - the first of its kind in the band's history. Long live The Grateful Dead! End the war now! Obama '08!
Probably, the most impressive thing about the Dead in their heyday was that the quality of their music was so great that they never had to resort to the cheap theatrical tricks employed by so many of their contemporaries. It was the ultimate triumph of substance over style. How sad then, to hear Micky utter statements such as: "He seems like a statesman just by the way he moves."
I remember being impressed by a comment made by Jerry during an interview. He stated that he never evangelized his politics because he was very cognizant of the immense power that his fame had afforded him among the Deadheads and did not want to ever abuse it by encouraging people to believe that his very special musical competence afforded him any concomitant insight into politics. Perhaps, Bob, Phil, and Mickey would have been better served by asking themselves: "What would Jerry do?"
Bob, Phil, and Mickey are not Jerry and cannot live in his shadow. If they truly believe that this is a good cause to unify themselves for, then why not endorse it? Jerry had his beliefs, and they have theirs. They are entitled to their beliefs and the ability to act on said beliefs regardless of what Jerry would do. I'd like to think that most Deadheads are intelligent and independent enough to make their own political decisions and not rely on three surviving band members to direct them.

I'm sorry but I think you read me wrong. I was commenting on the post that stated Jerry would have jumped on board. I don't think so.
I also don't believe for one moment Jerry would have even said to the guys "I don't want you to do this," if he were here. That was not him.
If I did complain about reunion shows it would have been only about their performance. If they sucked, they sucked.

Yeah, I did read it wrong. I thought you were like Jerry wouldn't want this, so they shouldn't do it.

mickey hart seemed to explain this behaviour when he said: "these are desperate times and we are desperate people."
i think he doesnt agree with this political propaganda, however he must take desperate decisions to help people
i dnt think he`s right because the way they are triyng to do things is almost taking from the people the choice to vote. it is as though they were saying: "if you are with us, then vote on obama. if you vote on bush, you are not one of us"
SAD.. :S

"Nobody in 08" They all are bad news.

we always pick the popular person the person who inspires and speaks to the heart BUT lets be honest that is not the qualitys we need in our leaders we need someone who can lead and govern and deligate to get things done yes I know it's boring talking details and real action BUT thats what we need. please lets not make the same mistake we've always made !

hey man! this shit is real! The Dead were never truly apolitical. The rainforest issue, opposition to Vietman, AIDS research, etc.
Barack is the real deal. at least they're not stumping for Mitt Tomney.

Obama '08!

That is why Jerry would have voted for Ron Paul!
Bobby played for the Bill Clinton Inauguration.
Jerry always said he was a libertarian but never endorsed anyone.
Timothy Leary did a fund raiser for Ron Paul in 1988...

Perhaps, Bob, Phil, and Mickey would have been better served by asking themselves: "What would Jerry do?"
joedunn26231 4 years ago 2
Bob, Phil, and Mickey are not Jerry and cannot live in his shadow. If they truly believe that this is a good cause to unify themselves for, then why not endorse it? Jerry had his beliefs, and they have theirs. They are entitled to their beliefs and the ability to act on said beliefs regardless of what Jerry would do. I'd like to think that most Deadheads are intelligent and independent enough to make their own political decisions and not rely on three surviving band members to direct them.
