The first games were actually Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake

Dude, definitely get 3 and also I highly recommend gettin an NES emulator and playing "Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake" (not the U.S. version "Snake's Revenge") or if anything find a good walkthru video. It has so much story to it that is essential to the MGS series.

If you have studied this subject, you would have known that 'Metal Gear' and 'Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake' actually started on the MSX2 computer system. The N.E.S port of 'Metal Gear' is garbage (according to Hideo Kojima himself) and "Sanke's Revenge" is an unauthorized sequel that was never approved by Hideo. Hideo never participated on that.
