@armychick2018 Ya, one thing i know that works for getting a little air if ya run out is turnin the nozzle to fan, peel the side of your mask nearest the water and get up close to the fanned water. there is fresh air being pumped in from the tank (not a ton, but a little). if you're ever doing some hose training, feel the back of the fan, air comes off of it, does the same thing in the fire. But most of all, keep your head on straight.
@armychick2018 ya its a typical thing to do, all the movies show it. so why not pull them danged things as tight as possible haha. one of our guys did it, freaked pretty bad, ended up breaking the straps and such. we told him to calm down and take a deep breath, i guess it wasnt very good advice at the time!
@armychick2018 dont tighten the mask quite so tight. make it so you can pry the corner of the mask up with a finger to get fresh air in an emergency situation. itll still seal fine, just allows you to get fresh air if you run out.
i just put scba on for my first time yesterday for a training and we have the steel tanks and some carbon fiber tanks but i got a steel one and those are heavy
@baseballguy6908 lol thought the same thing why put it on if its going to be open at the side like that. When we train and practice we train as if its real not just for fun and half ass....
For our department, there is no SOG on how to do it. (We're also a volly dept.) We also have no test for a firefighter, however the Wisconsin FF1 State Certification test requires us to gear up, be 'on air' and all snaps/straps/buckles fastened in under 2 minutes. The over the head method, while not the greatest, does help cut down time in the test.
@Hawkins203 First off, I'm not a volunteer. The closest volunteer dept to me is an hour away. and EVERY and I mean every, dept in Canada according to the text book has taken the over head method out of thier sog's
@monkeybone444 True, and I agree it's not the greatest method. But as I was saying, we really only do it for our State Test, and after that, the tanks are all on trucks in the seats, so it's really a pointless thing. The only time we don't put them on from the truck, is generally when we have a truck out of service, or for a training where we aren't using the trucks. Even then, though, it doesn't really happen.
Glad to see, unlike some people, you can be civilized in a conversation :)
@Hawkins203 Actually I have a question. Is it true that alot of the full time stations in the states (which ever state, could be one or all) are actually becoming volunteer?
I've heard rumors about it for a while and I think that's pretty unfair. I would still do this even if I didn't get paid, but still I think it's dumb that people like us that actually help people need other jobs while all the cops are making good money not really doing anything.
Well.. Not that I know of, no where around here is that the case... The local fire paid/professional dept is actually still going strong, but actually some of their firefighters are looking at us in bad taste because my department (Which is paid on call, versus strictly volunteer) just took a pay cut for our trainings. Instead of losing funding for equipment/safety.
If you want to discuss it, message me. I'm running out of characters... and fast. Haha
Question... Is this an actually fire dept? Or is that his house .... And when u don ur scba over ur head like that always wear ur helmet if u accidently slip or lose grip on it ur gonna have a major hospital bill .
@pur3king lol, thats not the the part I had a problem with. It was the "always wear a helmet when you put your air pack on". lol what a joke, have you ever put on an scba, Mr. supposed firefighter?
Ohh and to the guy in the video, not bad at all but you failed. There were gaps between your nomex hood and mask. Speed isn't everything
@IanHimself28 you wear a helmet when u don your scba over your head .. if u do any other method such as a coat method u dont but over the head method u should because if u drop it your gonna be sorry .. you should know what a coat and over the head method is when donning a scba if u think im not the firefighter.
@IanHimself28 i live in america and work in california for the fresno fire dept this isnt old stuff.you should know this dont be doubting me because at my department this is what we do .. you dont have to wear a helmet but its recommened
@aplauchegmail Hello sir/ ma'am, I'm trying to learn all of thee terms-- I'm not quite in Fire Exploring yet and I was wondering what the acronym "AFD" stood for, and "pass alarm."
AFD is simply the austin fire department and a pass alarm is an alarm that sounds if you dont move for 30 seconds so if you're unconscious it can alert other fire fighters
you can also manually activate it if you're in trouble
Good job although the only thing that i have to say is dont listen to this guys number 1 but number 2 and most important dont just put your hood over your head make sure that you put it under ur chin aswell
haha im an explorer this is a fail to us. We have to check to see if we have a seal for our mask, shout air pressure, helmet has to be on when putting tank on and we get all our gear on and the tank on in less than 1:30. Put for your dept im guessing thisiss good so good job
if you do that in belgium, then you are failed .. here you must say how much air pressure you have, you must test the whistle (vacuum test) and then you must check the over pressure ..
i've *never* had the straps get caught on my helmet, and even if i had, i would rather take an extra 1 or 2 seconds to don my SCBA than get knocked out or killed as a result of hitting myself in the head with my tank.
Is that gear as well, or just SCBA? I know for us, it's all buttons/snaps fastened, as well as all Velcro Velcro'd. Then, on air in addition.

I fucking hate the over head method! Alot of department have taken it out of their SOG's now... It is a good method for donning on your knees though.
