They use ESP, and some gibson les paul for their clean stuff and not so heavy stuff! I dont know much about trivium but i know they Use Dean and Esp!

When it comes to playing clean; the Fender Stratocaster is king. Les Pauls are for distortion-type things. Compare this session with one of the Strat sessions and you will see the difference - Strats are just sweeter.

Sometimes it seems to me like Les Pauls can be as different to each other as Strats and Teles. Is there one tone trademark that you will find in all Les Pauls?

No matter what model, and how different they can be, all Les Pauls will always have that deep ballsy tone that you can rarely find in any other guitar. The woods are amazing on them (:
