Can any1 recommend a good first pen? I have never used a fountain pen, but I have always wanted to try. But I don't want to buy a super expensive one that I won't use again if I decide I don't like it, or a super cheap one that will make me want to not use one again because it's so cheap. Thanks.
You didnt put the retainer back I dont exactly understand what is it used for...or do you not need it with the converter cartridge..thanks ahead of time
Thank you for sharing this video. I noticed that you did not put the ring back into place ( upper right corner of screen). Is this needed? I see that the pen wrote just fine without it, but in your tutorial you mentioned this ring as helping to keep the ink from....leaking? I have not read ALL the comments below , so if this has already been mentioned, I apologize
@TimRosenTV the paper rolls is just to protect the factory ink cartridge and so that its not leaking during the shipping process. once you take it out you can tighten the pen up and it would draw the ink in the pen.
@TimRosenTV It prevents the ink from coming out at all I think. I don't have that ring in any of the relatively expensive pens I own, so I doubt it's necessary for anything whatsoever.
Do you use this for inking drawings or just for writing all awesome like? Because I find dip pens much more effective for drawing.......... Just saying. Although i have a fountain with cartridges for drawing and inking at school
Thanks for this video! I just received my new Duke pen through Ebay, and it works like a charm after your excellent instruction. I also have a new Italic pen which is also very beautiful. Thanks again.
Great video man i like it i have been having some trouble with pens. I got a ya fa fountain pen and it works OK but i am getting a sheaf fer prelude and i am going to do exactly what is in this video. thanks.
Im going to buy my first rollerball pen today, but what I dont understand is how is there a difference, im a college student and im on rollerballs, specifically the pentel rsvp bk91, yes they cost less, but they flow bettter, and last longer too
Thanks for the vid. But I have to ask, what's the difference between detergent and soap? (I've always just said "dishwashing liquid") are you talking about a different product with different chemical properties? or is it just the names?
So I just got my new A.G. Spalding medium nib pen in the mail from JetPens (really pretty pen), and it is my first fountain pen. I immediately, like a total noob, plugged the cartridge right in and it skips like crazy, I have to press quite hard to get the ink flowing, and when it flows, I feel like it is releasing way too much ink. Too much ink meaning there in no way I could take notes with it. Any suggestions? :-(
just wondering if i buy some other pen that uses the cartridges.. where can i buy the pump adapter for it? or is it only this version of pen has the adapter ?
@zero00tolerance you should be able to use a standard converter in just about any pen you buy. There are a few sizes of converters out there. So just make sure you find out which ones your pens accept.
@JGsss15 the nib may have had some water left in it, it should darken up after a bit. you can use a piece of paper and write a bunch of lines like an EKG. That always works for me.
@withoutink thanx , I got it about a month ago, and to be honest, my handwriting IS horrible, but for some reason I do write a bit more clear with a good fountain pen, :) I wonder how that can though..
i dont reely like fountin pens i have a bad experience i have had 3 and they all ruined my shirts and so i now have the lamy safari ballpoint and mechanical pencil in white they are super
Can you recommend an inexpensive fountain pen around 15 dollars or so ..I've never owned a fountain pen and want a cheap one preferably with a cartridge converter any advice would be appreciated Thanks.
@paintballkid132 if you can go say $20ish Id recommend a Lamy Safari, it takes cartridges and a converter. The nibs cab be swapped out and they work great. Plus they come in a bunch of great colors. Solid performer.
@paintballkid132 You can get some really good prices on eBay - I got myself a Lamy Al-star (aluminium ver of safari) + 5 cartridges for $17.80 incl postage.
There are also auctions, and I netted a 2nd one (this time w/o the extra box of cartridges) for $12.25. Some auctions end a fair bit lower.
I then bought a whole bunch of cartridges (they have 20pc for $2.95 + 4.90 postage) and a z24 converter ($4.50, I got combined postage with the former) from the ebay seller chrissi0422.
I taught myself to write with no pressure using a pilot varsity disposable fountain pen, before I started to use a more expensive fountain pen with converter and bottled ink for most writing. I still use a ball point on 4-part forms. always put cap on back of an expensive pen when writing to help with balance and feel of pen.
Hey, do you know how to prevent a pen from jamming when using Speedball's Black Indian ink? The only ink I can use on my pens without jamming then is Waterman Black Ink.

Best to buy online. My mistake: bought 3 bottles of lamy ink with first good fountain pen just to go over $55 to get free shipping. Haven't even used up one bottle in 1 yr & 3 mo. Few Brick & morter stores stock much FP ink because FP's are not in vogue anymore and it would cost too much to order given that it doesn't sell well.
@Pagweb don't use indian ink with fountain pens. you need a dip pen or similar for indian ink. indian ink will detroy your pen as it has shellac in it.
@Pagweb don't use indian ink with fountain pens. you need a dip pen or similar for indian ink. indian ink will destroy your pen as it has shellac in it.
@Booklvr777 A fountain pen is a nib pen that, unlike its predecessor the dip pen, contains an internal reservoir of water-based liquid ink. From the reservoir, the ink is drawn through a feed to the nib and then to the paper via a combination of gravity and capillary action. As a result, the typical fountain pen requires little or no pressure to write. Not to mention, they are fantastic writing implements!
@neoarcadezr A lot of people prefer cartridges, but this video is helpful if you're more into looking after your pens, and exploring their full potential, than just going for the simplest and most disposable method.
great turorial! it was exactly what i needed to get started with my own new fountain pen! even though now that it is all set up i need to learn how to really USE it... -.-"
Honestly, I searched for exactly what you taught in this video. Time saver, and extremely convenient that is was there when I needed it! New to pens, you know how that goes. ^_^
@withoutink I see. I currently use the normal Lamy cartridges, but I'm considering to buy an ink pot and a convertor. Is it just the colour choices that's different with the bottles? Or are there other advantages/disadvantages to bottles? Because if the only difference with cartridges is the colour, then I don't think it's worth buying bottles? :-)
@Tibokio Well, color is the big 1 for me. I love playing with all sorts of different inks. The different companies that produce ink, also perform differently. Ink is not the same with every pen/nib/paper you use it in/on. subtleties and various nuances appear often. things like wetness, feathering, bleedthrough vary a lot. at least that is what I have found to be true. if u are happy with cartridges, so be it. I like how color affords me different emotions and expressions, but thats just me =)
@Tibokio Bottled ink is cheaper than cartridges. Also there's a lot more variety to bottled inks than the more disposable "slot in and bugger off" method of cartridges. When you're using bottled inks you also tend to be looking after the pen more carefully, because you're more into the mechanics of it.
Thanks for this! I decided to switch from cartridges to refilling pens myself and this was a great tutorial. I take my red Safari with me everywhere so I won't have to use a ballpoint ever again and now I won't have to switch to my cheapo Varsity's every time I forget to order more cartridges!
Cheers, mate. I just got a Lamy pen and this helped me understood how to clean it. Unfortunately, I've already started using it, so I'll give it a good clean after i've run out the current cartridge.
Good video. I would also like to add that it makes things so much easier if you get an "ear syringe" from your local drug store. They are just a rubbery bulb with a tapered end, and that end happens to be perfect for fitting over the bit in the back of the section where ink is drawn from the cartridge or converter.
Use the ear syringe to force more water through the section, and you'd be surprised how much more ink ends up coming out of the pen. Then just let it sit overnight, and you're set!
i like to write as small as possible which are better to write with foundation pens or the pilot g-2 0.38

Why use bottled ink instead of the cartridges? Isn't it easyer to just pop in a cartridge?
Or does bottled ink just has a very high quality?
Tibokio 1 year ago
@Tibokio Bottled ink is cheaper than cartridges. Also there's a lot more variety to bottled inks than the more disposable "slot in and bugger off" method of cartridges. When you're using bottled inks you also tend to be looking after the pen more carefully, because you're more into the mechanics of it.
