Amusing that a Christian would call you a 'satanist' (below). They apparently confuse spirituality with fascism. I suppose its okay to pray and go to Church regularly even if both are done in complete hypocrisy. People have Spiritual Callings; these are genuine heartfelt, soul-shaking things and not everyone has the same spiritual calling. This is a fact Christians, Islamists and Orthodox Jews cannot acknowledge because Monotheists confuse Spirituality with Fascism!
I have noticed when people get old and sick and closer to death they sometimes want to be religious to try to get to an afterlife.Desperate times call for desperate measures I guess.I don't know and I don't care.I can't make myself believe in something my heart and mind doesn't accept. I never had a religous spiritual feeling.Ever.If there is a God it Does not care.
I see everywhere you went wrong in here. Just go back to God. forget buddist. If you were devout in christianity you would know that the bible speaks against that. With all do respect man you obviously are an open minded guy just trying to find what's right but when you receive the Holy Ghost with the gift of speaking in tonuges as God gives utterance then God will open up your vision more. The bible ask "understandest what thou readest" because its hard to understand but just go back man
I sometimes struggle to define Buddhism as a religion. There are many schools of Buddhism that can be defined as atheist (eg: read Dawkins' God Delusion). Some schools of Buddhism are very dogmatic though. The nice thing about Buddhism though is that you can walk into almost any Buddhist temple or meeting place, anounce that you are an atheist and be met with a response in peoples eyes that says "so what?".
Wish you had not surrendered yourself to anything less than God's best for your life, which, is Jesus Christ. He is the way, truth, and the life. No man comes to the father, but through Him.
I noticed similiarities in these stories, mine included. Christianity> then the awareness that there is more out there > spirituality/buddhism (or both) usually follow > finally atheism
Right and that is a system of thought that you believe in, the idea that there is no God or that any of the religious systems, Bible, Koran are true.
It's still a belief system since you can't disprove God so you simply believe in the idea or system of thought that says No God or religion is correct.
You're a little mixed up. It's not a system of thought that believes in unbelief. Lol.
It's a "hmmm, I look around and I don't see any evidence for a god(s), and all the people that say they know there is a god seem really angry, unhappy, and crazy. So I cant trust what they say. It looks like there probably isn't a god."
I don't believe in fairies or pink elephants either for the same reason. There's no evidence and people who claim to have seen them are kinda loopy. But it would not....
....be right to say: Oh, you just have a system of thought where you are believing that there are no fairies. Um, no. I don't think they exist because of the aforementioned reasons. It doesn't mean they DON'T exist! They very well could. But there isn't enough evidence to say they are real, because I would look crazy and credulous if I said there was. Make sense?
Atheism isn't a belief system. It's not 'believing there is no god.' No one knows if there is a god, period. Anyone who says they know there is one is a liar, because they can't prove it to someone else. But if there was a god, it just makes sense that we would see some kind of evidence for him, and that one of the holy books would look like something more than an ancient text written by barbarians. But we don't have these things, so it looks like nope cant say I believe it.
thank you for your candid answer... i find it funny you lost your faith after bootcamp, I got saved in the Marine Corps...after bootcamp. I find your answer interesting, especially your definition of devout... buddhism is kinda like the army... you can be all that you can be or not! lol
from buddism i really like meditation it is a very powerful psychology technique that those people invented before psychologists. But you simply meditate it doesnt make you a buddist. I dont even think it makes you spiritual it just makes you practice your gray matter and develop certain skills that might be helpful in life like concentration and control of your body. Definitely need more of videos like this, going more indept wouldnt hurt but i think 5 stars is in order.

I remember the moment I just knew religion was a crock. I was 11, and I couldn't rationalize it or assemble a coherent thesis as to why I just didn't believe, despite being raised in a semi religious family, and growing up in the type of area in the US that you find snake handler churches everywhere. Being surrounded by what wasn't far from the characters from Footloose, I kept my mouth shut for years, but as I grew, I got the balls to come out. It's cost me some friendships, but hey...
5:00 - You say you became an atheist and then you smiled, almost automatically. Feels good doesn't it? To finally be liberated from weird superstitions.
Feels good indeed. A smile with a soft laugh was my first reaction when I lost my faith. It feels great to have so much cognitive dissonance & illogical tangled webs snap into orderly thinking.
Okay, in light of his most recent actions, no. But close, I'm sure. I was evangelical like him, but not so fundie. Though I can say that I did ridicule the Theory of Evolution while I was a Christian. Kind of funny looking back on it.

Buddhism and atheism are not mutually exclusive.
Actually, if you wanna be technical, Buddhism REQUIRES atheism.
A core belief in Buddhism is that "there is no god".

Religions don't need to have gods, just a belief in an afterlife. That's one thing all religions have in common.
Then there are other supernatural things included. The many variants of religion include:
Afterlife + one supergod
Afterlife + many gods of different power, domains, or interests
Afterlife + supernatural ancestors
Afterlife + spirits
Afterlife + Magic
Afterlife + Universal force which delivers justice through rebirths
The last thing is basically what Buddhism is.
reynirorn 2 years ago
As I understand buddhism, it is more a philosophy thana religion as it is more a set of principles etc without a belief in a deity or any gods.
