do a compression test that will tell you something about your motor if the compression is above 300 on all cylinders your are good any thing lower you will have problems starting in cold weather... if you have compression lower that 300 add a bit of oil to each cylinder and see if the compression comes up if it does your rings are worn .... Most older diesels have blow by (air blows out as it run) the compression test or a leak down test can tell you a lot about your motor....
Hey I just bought a 1978 240D with a veggie oil conversion, Im new to driving on veggie oil but I have been heating my home with WVO or SVO for nearly six years so I know oil. but would not claim to be an expert on this at least yet. The car has the 4 cylinder non turbo and seems to run fine even on veg oil. however when you take the oil cap off a good amount of air blows out as it runs, the car has 233000 miles and I only paid 500 for it. can I expect this engine to last long, if I care for it?
this is stupid to waste money i put veggie oil in my 1992 mercedes w124 0m602 with no mods. i live in florida so i dont have to heat anything but if u are up north why not just install a preheater?
@ubuntunoobz fuel lines run under the car.... highway speeds will give you a very very bad windchill. and you should heat it anyways. if you can "smell the fries" your not burning all of it.... that's leaving carbon on your cyclinder walls, and killing your engine rings. mercs are built tough, so yeah it'll probably continue to run for a long time, but it'll start to drink motor oil.
@BmxDieseldude what a load of shit coming out of your face. your asshole is jealous. iv built countless diesel 603,602 and gas 104,103 engines and never ever ever heard of carbon on the cylinder walls.... and u seem so confident but since iv been doing this forever and got 300,000 miles on my w124 om602 im pretty sure your wrong. and if i can smell it its not burned all the way? thats the stupidest thing iv ever heard.
@ubuntunoobz you've never heard of carbon build up on the cylinder walls? enough said right there. cold veg doesn't burn completely, and it'll leave carbon deposits on the walls. im not completely against the whole WVO thing, but there are some steps that are needed to run it safely especially in cooler environment. and no im not exactly jealous. i love my w123.
@BmxDieseldude no i haven't frankly i think its bullshit your daddy spoon feed u. have u ever noticed a piston moving up.......and.....down at 3k rpm? carbon build up doesnt have the time to form before the piston moves over it again. and dont be to proud of a w123, they rust away. and they have IMO the worst diesel engine mercedes has ever made. and the corn oil/diesel does not go cold into the cylinder...ever XD. theres a little thing called a preheater that comes stock on the car.
@BmxDieseldude lol, you found the wrong guy to try and argue with. he's only 17 and he's built so many diesel and gas engines you cant even count.i also have a w124 and i also run it on veggie oil, unmodded and she does great. you dad did spoon feed you bull shit, because as ubuntunoobz explained, there isnt enough time for carbon to cool down and harden on the cylinder walls. and the smelling the fries? ita gonna smell like that. if it wasnt burning all the way it would smoke you dont know shit
Im so glad I live in teh desert, I use the original tank and fill it with WVO, SVO B99 or straight Diesel, Only replaced my fuel lines and a few fuel filters. $45.00 to run what I want. Why do you fools pay so much and do more work then needed?
@mikedrazen at least heat it so the water evaporates. water will kill your injectors. (ain't cheap) watch. i promise you within the next 8k miles no matter how "water free" you think it is. your fuel filter will be really closed up and clogged, you'll suddenly lose lots of power from from it. Run it like that for eh, a 100 miles and your injectors will be feeling crippled. but hey, you know better than me.
Nice installation job, I like the huge tank. I wouldn,t bother heating the injection lines though because of the moister and other contamanants in the waste oil it will cause build up and corrossion of your injectors and lines, you should always purge systems and switch back before shut down, nice touch though. are your lines running back to the wvo fuel tanks heated too? have they ever gelled? again one of the nicer conversions Ive seen.
I have had the injection line heater on for a few years now have not had any problems with the injection lines or injectors... Of couse I dewater the veggie oil and filter it down to 1 micron. Yes I start up on diesel and shut down on diesel to purge the veggie oil out of the injection lines . I have never had to heat my wvo tank . I live on the west coast so it does not get much below 30f . So no real need to heat the tank.
single tanks need warm weather and you should pre heat the injection lines to warm up or melt the veggie oil so you do not gum up the rings with cold veggie oil.
If you run biodiesel you should change your hoses and to viton hoses... however wvo or svo ( waste veggie oil) you do not have to change the hoses or seals.
you need to heat the wvo waste oil to get it to flow to the injection pump... should be 140f to 160f ... helps the wvo burn and not gum up the rings... you should read up on the road test
i live in germany and im studying auto mechatrition wich is auto mech, and elec etc. over here most new diesel cars use a special catalyst making the gases pretty much as good as good as a gas car. Maybe if you get one of them and use veg oil it will be better than a gas car ? its worth trying i think.
@nigel101 prechamber heads are best [ old merc's old Renault's ect ] as the fuel is ignited in a small chamber in the head witch is then blasted in to the cylinder, on td's the fuel is injected into the cylinder, as v oil burns at about 400 c [ diesel 190 ] it hits the piston and then is unburnt, not good for the engine as it then go's down the bores filling you sump. they all need there oil change regally but td's need checking all the time as the oil get's Stinky and smelly.
2 tanks are the ideal system, because you want to heat the engine, fuel and injectors before the oil is injected for a cleaner burn as well as it being easier on the fuel pump. When the oil is hot enough, it's thinner, and also stops carbon buildup as well as coking around the injectors. Adding solvents may be bad for seals and generally settles in the tank due to not mixing correctly.
wow.....u know u really dont need all that bs the 80's mercedes have a heater installed already u dont need to make modifications....i run my 1987 mercedes on pure cooking oil no mods.
I heard that if you mix a certain kind of solvent into the oil first, it'll change the viscosity so it's better for the engine. I think the reason you get better milage with the hot oil is because of the viscosity. I could be wrong though.
I've seen this done by just pouring veggie into the stock tank and heating it before it gets to the injectors. I don't think there is need for a second tank if you are running and older Mercedes. I have heard that newer vehicles (TDI VW's, CDI Jeep's) need to have an additional tank.
There is no need for two separate fule systems, you can run it only on bio-diesel by mixing the vegetable oil with a specific aditive(viscosety reduction aditive).
The secondary filter is the bis canister one, but you need a filter on the line coming into the injector pump, located on the engine block, that one clogs sometimes, and someone may have removed it on your car

if you are going to run wvo with out any heat you should blend with diesel may save you time and money on parts ... how warm is it were you are?

i run wvo filtered, no conversion, no dewater
on my 300sd, its only been 1 week
i put on 500 miles, it runs fine
i have a feeling, i'm gonna need to replace injectors and pump
but its to be expected, after replacement, i'll filter better
i use a resturant cone oil filter, it's problly not even 10 microns

shouldn't the wvo pass though the heat exchanger and then the heated filter instead of the heated filter and then the exchanger?
my understanding was that the oil should get as hot as possible to the filter, since when the oil is hot it can be filltered better.
