I did the same to my 1996 z28 after watching this video. The muffler shop only asked $60.00 to replace the muffler with pipe and replace the stock Z28 tips to get the stock look back. Put now going through town I am worried that I may attract some unwanted attention from the police b/c when i get on it more than what this video shows, it is loud.
one thing i didn't know about the LT1 before i got my 1996 z28 was that there are three different verizons. two years for each. making it difficult finding a replacement timing chain cover.
arent you guys forgetting displacement? mustangs are 4.6 and Camaros are 5.7 at least from these years, THATS the biggest factor about sound, bigger the engine the deeper the sound
@CRAZYXBLACKXMAN I've owned the car for 7 years and drive it daily, the only things that have needed fixing/replacing are the water pump, power steering pump and the battery!
chowhound: You are either off your meds or do not know anything about an LT1. The less restriction a LT1 has the more horsepower it lays down. Taking off the muffler adds horsepower. You ever wonder why NHRA, IHRA and NASCAR do no run mufflers? MORE POWER!! The last time I uncorked my exhaust and ran open headers I didn't see any harm whatsoever. No backpressure needed. LOL
clownhound: Yep you are off your meds. Naaa.....you just don't know anything about engines. Your reply proves that beyond a doubt. Yeah, you can talk some bs now, but in reality, and the fact remains, you know nothing about engines. Especially an LT1. Anytime you want to ask someone about an LT1 and how they work then shoot me a question. I always try to help out the Wal Mart mechanics. OBTW....how do you turn a ventless opti into a vented opti? What are the advantages?
clownhound: I have had mine on a "wheel" dyno LOL. Open exhaust is more HP, a better torque curve and the dyno proves it. Oh my...all that engine noise from those modern computer engines at the local strip with those mufflers bolted up to the collectors must mean everyone has put theirs on a "wheel" lol dyno and seen where 10 more foot of exhaust pipe and 2 mufflers gives them the horspepower advantage against the competition. Such a quiet place, that dragstrip. LOL What is gasket matching?
clownhound: Still waiting for the answers to those "tough" questions. C'mon, being such a seasoned LT1 engine builder since "1981" you should be able to rattle off those answers in your sleep. Just what I thought...another YouTube mechanic. I thought I was going to learn something today on engines and such. Enjoy your WalMart day, Mr. ASE certified mechanic.
clownhound: An ass is someone who lies and really doesn't even know anything about something that they claim to. That's an ass. You have that territory well covered. And let me search for the term that you called me....umm....I think it was "putz." That must be a term for someone who knows just a tad bit more than you. So you quit being an ass and then maybe everyone else who imitates you assish ways will fall in line.
clownhound: I have built no less than 10 LT1's and your statement gives you away. LT1's did not exist in this form in this video for the general public until 1992. The old LT1 that was made in the early 70's is a different beast altogether and shares name only. However, I have owned two of those in a '70 Z28. How do you disable or reduce the effectiveness of a 1993 LT1 knock sensor without throwing a code? Let me know lol.
11.20 @ 119 MPH NO juice or chargers here and a stock bottom end.
Its easy to drive but you have to respect the torque at the rear wheels, easy to make mistakes in the wet if you get a bit throttle happy. Other than that its all good fun.
@psykho15 I believe LT1s have better higher end power than the LS1s, but then the LS1s don't have the potentially problematic optispark ignition system. Other than that its down to personal preference on looks etc... You will be happy with what ever one you decided on though so don't worry about it too much. :)
@scottie8181 lt1s are low to mid bro ls1s pull mid to high... stock to stock the ls1 will pull on a lt1 in the 1/4 and keep walkin... and i have 2 lt1 f-bodys i know... 1 stock 1 not my z28 lt1 will pull on bolt-on ls1s but it weighs less then 3000lbs and has many mods... go with the ls1 if you want to run n/a if you want to boost the lt1 will save you money in the long run
@scottie8181 you coudln't be any more wrong in your response....LT1's produce more torque at a lower rpm than the LS1's, but the LS1's have waaay more top end and produce more HP , and Torque stock for stock...no doubt LS1 is stronger than LT1 stock
@psykho15 not to be "that guy" but just for your own info the ls1 is the superior motor if i had the choice i would get the ls1...But i do own a 96 z28 and i have the lt1 which i love its a great motor as well its just the ls1 is better. If you end up with either one you will be happy. there great cars and respond pretty good to mods..my lt1 makes 310whp and 350 wftlbs thats with full bolt ons and stock cam.
@FUCK202 I know you can take a 25mph curve at 45mph with no sweat. The fourth gen camaros which includes this one where built with the engine set farther back into the dash to balance the wieght.
trust me. i have a camaro z28 350 with duel exhaust and no mufflers. the raw unsilenced v8 was cool at first but got annoying really quick. cant even listen to music lol
I did lose a lot of back pressure, the result being that the car was a bit sluggish when pulling away. However there was a definate increase in higher rpm hp, verified by my accelerometer.
After a year or so I switched to an Edelbrock SDT catback (see my other clips) which is a happy medium.
How do you figure Camaros need mufflers, or back pressure at all? They don't.
If you believe so, you better tell all the guys in top fuel cars, making 8,000+ horsepower with open headers, that they're doing it wrong, and that with backpressure, they might get a better launch..
You replied to me, yet I can't even find my original comment. I remember replying to the guy that wrote up the whole bit on how Camaros "need" backpressure.
Maybe the poster of the video deleted my comment, or it's just not showing up on my end for some reason. Odd.
@cr0wnedstrength No, he didn't lose back pressure. He gained it. That's why it's sluggish. It's because the gigantic opening in the exhaust doesn't allow it to flow as fast as it used to. Mufflers don't do shit, it's because the opening is too big.
Get that outta your head man. Back pressure = bad.
The "custom" bit is the pipe work I put in place of the muffler so I could make use of the exhaust hanger bracket to support the rest of the exhaust system.
There is a join between the muffler and the over-the-axle section of the exhaust pipe. It should be fixed with a band clamp. Carefully undo or cut off the band clamp and the muffler can slide off.
The beauty of doing this is that if you don't like the sound you can put the muffler back on with a new clamp!!
The newer model SS Camaros (1998-2002) go for around $8500 to $20,000 for super low mileage. A friend of mine has a brand new condition SS for sale for 20 grand, and it has about 10 thousand miles on it.
He even has a pace car replica SS convertible that's worth almost forty as it sits. It's got around 3 thousand miles on it.
I'd say if they were to be sold in your country, they'd go for double that.
I bought my z28 for 350 dollars because it had an engine knock. The guy didn't put oil in it for over 10,000 miles and it finally went. The engine cost me 2800 so I have a new engined 95 with ttops, leather, bose stock stereo for less than 4 thousand. I bought it with 70,000 miles on it.
Its a bit of a grey area really, I don't think there are any decibel limits to speak of but if the police catch you going silly and think its too loud you can get a ticket for it. I'm not too sure if you can pass an MOT test without a muffler or not. Its down to the authoritys discretion I'd say.
Regardless of that I drove about daily for a year like this and never got one complaint.
with that being in the UK were u get it serviced, at the chevys in uk? n u ever had to replace parts. just i want a american car like the camaro but im worried about servicing and parts, dont want to buy a car that when it brakes cant fix it
I get my servicing done at my nearest American car dealers, there are a few about in the UK. Parts are also readily available and most of the more common service items are usually in stock in this country. Buy yourself a copy of "Classic American" Magazine from WHSmiths, its full of ads for Yank dealers and parts suppliers in the UK.
That Camaro sounds so much better without the stock muffler, the stock muffler makes the car wayyy too quiet, now, that Camaro sounds like the 96-97 LT1 Camaro SS
It sounds ok when your at idle, but it sounds horrible when u take off. You need exhaust if it's a stock motor otherwise there's no back pressure and it sounds terrible.
auctualy the reason you need a muffler is because "some" say your car's not jetted right and it will burn the exhaust valves up. even though i've never seen it happen. just bc theres no back pressure dosent mean it will sound bad, take dragsters for instance.
Yup... Even though Fords have historically been slower, they got the sound just right with the 5.0L HO, not quite as good with the 4.6L, but still much better than most 5.7L Chevys.
I see.. I don't know much about stangs but it make sense and when I say they sound better than maros, thats just my opinion, everyone likes their own sound.
@ceejay1024 You need long tubes and an ORY or true duals with an orx, I run long tubes through ory into a hooker aerochamber catback and it's a perfect combo of loud and deep. When mustang guys say "damn that thing sounds nice". You're onto something. I drown out every mustang I've ran, and its not a raspy obnoxious sound doing it.
@steelfaze idk, mustangs sound too high pitched to me,not like high rpms, but just high pitched. To me an LT1 sounds wayyyy deeper.but yea the H is better than a Y.
it does not sound like a dump truck. It sounds sick. It would help if it had a bigger cam. It would give it more growl and less drone. Headers would make it louder too and a little higher pitched. I love taking mufflers off cars. I have a 1995 ford escort with a cherry bomb. It sounds like a ricer, its so freakin stupid but halarious.
man my cousin took me out in his 95comaro its sharp half black half silver with blue pin stripe in the middel its v6 though but its totaly clean under the hood and its pretty damn fast for a v6 and he did a really huge burn out and now i know what rubber smells like
lol at the 94 comment, maybe you mean 97 was the only year for a potential LT4 =/? 29 firehawks 106 SS? Cause the LT1 was in every V8 fbody from 93-97 unless one of the very rare LT4 cars in 97.

I see.. I don't know much about stangs but it make sense and when I say they sound better than maros, thats just my opinion, everyone likes their own sound.

@lilsniper5150 if you like higher pitched then mustang but if you like a deep rumble tthe camaro is the way to go
normanaw 1 year ago
@lilsniper5150 I own an LT1 camaro and i couldnt agree more. Its because the stangs are DOHC, makes their exhaust ALOT more aggressive

@ceejay1024 normal mustang gt's up to the 2011 are sohc. only cobra's and mach 1's are dohc. just sayin ;)

I disagree, Mustangs sound like they're under water.

man you probably drive a dump truck
fastlane421 4 years ago
it does not sound like a dump truck.
IrocDaChevy07 4 years ago 2
omg i did the same thing with my 90 ford escort and my 95 butt probe GT hated both them cars had to do something stupid to them
Americanmusclefan 4 years ago
Headers will actually make it quieter but not by much.

lol at the 94 comment, maybe you mean 97 was the only year for a potential LT4 =/? 29 firehawks 106 SS? Cause the LT1 was in every V8 fbody from 93-97 unless one of the very rare LT4 cars in 97.

Car sounds badass.

The only year Camaros came out with an LT1 was 1994.

Well, then do you care to enlighten me as to what motors went into the 93's and the 95-97's?
Cheers!

Idiot, think before speaking. :p LT1's were in 93 - 97 Camaro's.
grdlock 5 years ago
You obviously know nothing about FBodies. Get your facts straight. 93-97 FBodies had LT1s and 98-02 had LS1s. Retard....
