It's funny to see comments by people saying they want to go to Sweden now. I'm willing to bet they're not business owners or people who would be missed if they just decided to not show up at work because of some personal issue.
The free hand of capitalism that will smite injustices such as these against those who choose not to have children or pay for them themselves.
It's good to see the comments on here demonstrating the true selfish nature of socialism.
I wouldn't change it for anything in the world. The kids grow up healthier.
It's of extreme importance that a child bonds with his/her dad.
Because we've got it, we see it normal. The ones that didn't get it, don't understand it and see it as a financial impediment and make up all kinds of excuses to justify their primitive system.
Sweden doesn't have a magic system where you get 400 days of paid leave and free daycare! you should first and foremost state that Sweden has SOME OF THE HIGHEST TAX RATES IN THE WORLD! Presenting this fairytale image of a country does a huge injustice to the country that you guys should be representing: the USA! Perhaps you should mention that the median income in the US is about 33% higher than Sweden and that Sweden became rich with the free market system, not socialism
@svd205 True, Sweden pays for these benefits with high taxes. Which most Swedes, including the many entrepreneurs and business people we spoke with, are more than happy to pay. Is median income the best gauge of a healthy and happy society? Have you ever been to Sweden?
@svd205 , yet every European can go to the doctor and every mother gets PAID maternity leave, while in US life is a constant struggle. You get paid more, but your EXPENSES are times HIGHER than in Europe. 40% of AMericans can't afford to see a doctor! And you pay for Medicare with each paycheck which(SHOCK!) you can use only aftyer age 65. In Europe you pay for something you use NOW!!! You prefer to spend billions on genocide that's you problem.
@svd205 Sweden has some of the highest taxes. True. But we are one of the richest countries in the world anyhow and we top most indexes in health, education, equality, happiness, competitiveness, freedom of speech together with our scandinavian neighbours who have the same system as us. And WE ARE NOT a socialist country. It has been a socialdemocratic (not socialism) country for a long time, but they havent been in power for the last 5 years. We ve just found a better balance than america has.
which would be why I haven't moved... I left Illinois for Virginia because of all the cold... and my daughter is in love with the beach and swimming... so I think we're staying put.... but I can dream of it becoming like California (southern) and getting to move there in the next life.
Not true as long as you don't live at the very north of Sweden! It's not any worse here than it is in the US. Remember - we have the Gulf stream warmning us up ;)
what an amazing opportunity for dadlabs! congratulations boys! keep up the good work of investigation, and kudos to sweden for being so dad- and parent-positive.
Funny how people who say they're in favor of "family values" would never allow this in the US.

@svd205, don't you realize that 12 unpaid maternity weeks in a rich country is embarrassing?
Having a child mustn't be a punishment.
Sweden is not alone in this, more and more countries are following the example.
