Simple it's New York city a huge a city people drop money all the time, It can fall on the roads and sidewalks and into the sewers allot by people walking out of buildings and bumping into people, dropping money as people get in and out of cabs. Also probably not just coins probably sometimes complete wallets they'll probably just take out the money return the wallet.

I liked this verison of Casey and April a lot more than I did the cartoon (2000s) or the comics verison. It focused more on giving them character and personality. And wasn't obsessed with making a romance out of them.

I remember him confronting Danny in the car later in the movie about his stealing before Danny ran away from him.
