I'm not sure it's about Gary because it was written in the Nineties and at the time Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson, and Ed King were still in the band. If someone could please explain this.
@hAitztOn I was confused aswell, but I think gary, ronnie and allen were the ones who started skynyrd, so he's kinda the last one in the band, or "The Last Rebel" because billy, leon and Ed all joined in I think later where they replaced a guitarist or bassist, but billy was there first keyboardist, but he didn't join the band when they first started.
@hAitztOn It could easily apply to gary today seeing as how he's the last remaining member in the group, but when they wrote it I think it was just like any other song, telling a story really.
yeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaa gerneral lee is the boss of me, the SOUTH WILL RISE AGAIN. yehaa gary, last original member alive. R.I.P to those who died in the plane crash.
The Horse on the cover of this album just passed away September 2010. His birth name was Rebel and he was 33 years old. A fine horse he was. I miss him everyday.
I never got to see the original Skynyrd in concert. The first time I seen them was just after Leon's passing. They were supposed to play in Reno but the show was cancelled. I did get to see them a few months later in Yuma, Az with Billy and Gary also Hughie Tomasson was with the band. It was awesome I had my Confederate Battle Flag and was dancing around the audience, Skynyrd Loved it and so did the audience! The second time I seen them was with Hank Williams Jr. In San Bernardino.
@landonhuyyugttdft Towards the last 6 months of his Life ,Leon wasnt in good health, he would sometimes no-show shows, which is why Ean Evans was there at each show, so he could fill in. One night Leon and Ean were guests with a bar band, and after a drink or 2 Leon told Ean that he wasnt going to make it much longer in life, and he wanted Ean to take his place ,when it was his time. Ean got the call ,and became a band member, with Leon's blessing
@landonhuyyugttdft also, Leon kicked the drug and alcohol habit for a while, but it was on his birthday that someone gave him an 8-ball and thats when Leon got back in his old ways. Leon had several health issues, ans his Liver and insides were all messed up., towards the end Leon looked like he was in his 70's, ,but he was really 49. it really sucks because Leon lived a terrible life, just like Allen Collins, Leon only wanted to perform his music, entertain the fans and put his son threw collage
@landonhuyyugttdft I was supposed to meet Leon, but 2 weeks before, he had passed away , We had the chance to exchange e-mails, and weirdly as it is, he mailed me an autograph photo of himself, and it arrived in the mail 1 day after he passed.
@LynSkyn1981 I always wondered about his death it was strange to me but I guess he knew he couldn't take all that stuff anymore. It really did suck when he passed.
i hear ya ! good ole southern rock and roll... even my 13 yo son has this song on his ring tone... skynnyrd will live for as long as we keep them alive!
like i said, if you were a fan, you'd know when this was recorded , It was at the Fox Theater in 1993, this was the second longest Skynyrd concert recorded on Video, next to 2003's Vicious Cycle DVD Show.
You are soooo correct. Not many people know this, Thank You. The horse on the cover belongs to me. He'll be 33 this October. It's a coniendence his name is Rebel. Thanks Again
Yea i was like 12 when the PPV aired, had it on tape since. They busted their asses at this concert, it is probably my 2nd favorite LS Concert TV Special , next to 2003's Vicious Cycle Tour
