THIS GUY IS AWESOME one of the best guitarist I have ever seen.
You may not remember me but I saw you a few years in a row and the WORSHIP INSTITUTE CONFERENCES my name is Dino. I purchased a couple of packages of tab for jazz fingerstyle stuff very cool this was back in like 2002
damn I skipped all the introduction and landed on the first lick, replayed the lick about ten times to figure it out, and realized there is a slow version afterward.
How do you necessarily learn the notes on the staff on other places of the neck?
I know the notes on the staff aka open position pretty well, but since some of these jazz lick guitar vids show sheet music with tab that states the player should play higher on the neck instead of just in open position.
I know scale shapes from AllGuitarChords (dot com) and have been using them but haven't been paying attention to what notes are in each particular scale.
@AirHendrix91 I would recommend "Reading Studies for Guitar" - Hal Leonard. It has a purple cover, and it progressively goes from open position up on through all of the different positions, with plenty of challenging stuff. It's what I'm using and I'm up to 3rd position (finger 1 on 3rd fret). It also really helps you nail the notes on the entire fretboard. Hope this helps.
Rich, I got your jazz licks 1-21, they are awesome and I am working on tricks to incorporate them into my playing, and i just got the 2-5-1 licks. I would love to see more of the jazz licks continuation, but I thank you for this great service. My playing is already seeing the fruits of your valuable lessons. Keep it up!!!
Sorry Mister Severson - about my answer to the video Licks 1 ...."Where is the f in your line?" You play it really, but you dont speak about the note F in your line. This is my misunderstanding. Your videos are amazing. I found it just 10 days bevor in You tube. I can learn a lod from your great Guitar Playing. It would be nice, if you can cancel my first answer- Thank you very much, sorry...Dolf Schaller
@Flingotravels Hi, your mail is not very nice, because it`s my fault about this note
F. Rich play the note, but hi don`t speak about this F. So, it is very nice if you can cancel this bad words...look upstear my answer to Rich Severson. Thanks.
@guitarcollege4u Hi Rich, You're a great teacher I just learn Blue Bossa, Georgia and chord changes of bluesette because your methodology. Now, I want pursuit myself to understand what is behind the scales of every chord of the changes. When you said soloing around chords, did you use a degree of the chord you're passing through so can build the soloing?
Or may be you just said " If we look at the cycle of fourths, we see(for example) that D is the chord that comes before G, so we can put a scale that shared the D tonality to make the lick to G? You will helping me a lot with this songs I'm working through.
@Joggione maaaannn. you cant hate any type of music. If music is what you love. There are good artists in every genre but there are a whole bunch of horrible ones as well. You just haven't heard something you can get into yet.
I'm finding really hard to apply this to my improv. ANY IDEAS?! I can't ever figure out how to determine the key I can improv this lick with. ANY HELP GUYS?! thanks, ima noob i know
it's a 2-5-1 lick in C. you start the lick on d minor as the two minor chord, and the lick travels with altered tension notes over the five chord as G7 and resolves on the third of the 1 major seventh chord. Anytime you see a ii V I cadence in a jazz tune you can use this type of lick. Another thing this lick can do is introduce the idea of using approach tones or "friendly neighbors" into your vocabulary. Isolate the chord tones and use half-step approaches to connect the chord tones melodicaly
flyjoseph explained this lick pretty good. Another way to look at it is when you see Dminor play off the V of Dmin or A7 then to Dminor. There is also some A blues scale in the lick then an altered G7 finally resolving to C
love your guitar man. original look!
