in reply to the "top comments," first, the musician who committed suicide was Mark Linkous; sparklehorse was his band, and the rest of the members are (to the best of my knowledge) very much alive.

Both Yorke and Linkous sang on this track. Yorke did in fact contribute his portion via telephone.

This song is being sung by sparklehorse, a brilliant musician who sadly killed himself. The instruments are being performed by Jonny Greenwood, Phil Selway, And the rest of radiohead. For whatever reason Thom yorke refused to do this.

@MrTimothyWatts i believe it was EMI's idea, as part of an anniversary compilation where current EMI artists did covers of older EMI artists (i've got it somewhere). i can't find any information on the net about approached who, but i think Linkous approached Yorke to ask him to do backing vox, which he sang down a telephone (the two groups knew each other already as Sparklehorse supported Radiohead in the UK in '96).
