In Miami when the movie was 1st released, people thought it was funny having an Italian (Al Pacino) actor play the role of a Cuban. What saved the movie at that time from total dismise was the co-star, Steven Bauer (Manny) who was a Miami Cuban-American well known actor.
So funny, Scarface was not very popular until it was re-released in the 90s on DVD and glamorized by the video game Grand Theft Auto..now every ten year old is walking around with oversized Scarface shirts

Makes sense, can't have your cake and eat it too. I guess from the grief they got from the MPAA...they still had it as rated R.
