I was about 15/16 at the time babysitting watching this I just loved George Harrison, Dick Cavett I could do without LOL He was so conceited and a pseudo intellectual to us, the teens at that time for the most part. We had an English teacher who thought he looked like him and imitated him all of the time, SO annoying LOL
A nice man but unfortuneatly his eastern religion won't cut it in the eyes of the living loving god, jesus warned us and I see suffering and eternal pain for George. Too bad
@RommelEGH Hogwash,it's better to have a religion and belief than nothing. There are good people of all faiths and beliefs. I do not believe that Christians only will be able to go to heaven or what you believe is there in the after life. I believe in the good vs evil people and God never said you have to be a Catholic, Jew, etc to be loved, be good, and to achieve heaven, nirvana whatever you believe in. Where you are born and the religion you believe in does not make you a bad person.
i dont think it is rubish, it is just a man who died, and his life was this, and its not, so whats sadder a man who died in trying to find peace of heart, or the people on here bagging on a man whos dead
Anyone know roughly what the viewing figures would have been for something like this? I find it amazing that a kid from Liverpool could command the attention of a huge American audience in the 70s by talking about Eastern music and charities
@rockandroll4evermore I think he asked great questions...interviewers need to ask controversial questions like about his affect on drugs and youth or the interview would be cut and dry
I think George was always a slightly prickly and difficult guest to interview. I`m sure it is partly down to his nervous and tenseness under scrutiny but also due to his awareness of the banality of the situation. He is after all a very down to earth northern English type. You have to understand that wy of thinking.
Dick Cavett really makes a good job of eventually engaging him.
@PhilipPorter the key word is 'eventually.' cavett was obviously nervous too and it really shows in the beginning of the interview. maybe that's just his vibe - an era goneby and all that. but his presence was weak as hell in the first few minutes of part 1
George Harrison was a very perceptive person and you can see in this interview he doesn't trust Dick Cavett. I don't either. Something plastic about him.
Because of the world of shit thrown at the Beatles, George is wise far beyond his 28 years here. They were pure grace under media fire during Beatlemania
I like how real is. he doesnt care about the trivial things in life, and he cares more about the important things about life. He lived his life instead of spend his life watching reality shows
george is a realy cool person , it took him a we while to relax here but he starts to now and hes the best beatle who should have been allowed to put more music in the beatles.(
Cavett is the star here, too. We don't see this honest interviewing anymore, I don't think. George is smart and man enough to keep up, and it makes a great show. I really miss Cavett, actually, as much as I miss George.
If only George could watch American tv now! It's total bullshit now, tv sucks! My dad even complained about the numerous adverts back in the late 70's too.
It's so funny to hear George complain about all the commercials on American TV "40" years ago. I always hated them as a kid back then. I really have to grit my teeth to get thru them today. I would love to know what he thought in the last few years of his life about it.
@RickyJulianandBubbs I'm a fairly smart guy, and i never noticed what you posted... I was mesmerized by the interview, itself, which was incredibly honest, and engrossing.. Chillax..
Wow, when he was talking about American TV and how it was all BS, I was so shocked that he was open about it! About everything, really! I have soo much more respect towards George, I've always loved him and always will; his honesty and sense of humor is amazing! <3 RIP GEORGE <3
GEORGE HARRISON BELIEVED THE CRAP THAT THE AMERICAN RED CROSS ONLY HELPED WHITE PEOPLE AND NOT BLACK PEOPLE. WHAT A MORON!!! HE WAS A MUSICAL GENIUS --GRANTED-- BUT HE WAS NAIVE AND HE COULD SWALLOW A LOAD OF LIBERAL LIES.
@mexman4848 And how do you know they didn't? There was a lot of corruption in the late sixties and seventies especially with racial issues, and it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't help the African Americans there at the time, as there was still a lot of racism around.
Heroin is the perfect drug for people who feel a lack or an emptiness inside. It's not about getting high it's about blocking pain. The rock industry can really get to people who are at a level where it's a battle between the corporate push for profit and the artists need to express themselves. Google Dr Gabor Mate and he'll tell you about people's need to replace what their brain won't produce with opiates.
Strange that George is talking about Monty Python and News of the World in 1971. Monty Python in terms of George's future relationship with them. Strangely enough he didn't seem to meet them until 1975 according to both Eric Idle and Michael Palin. Also New of the World, this is being typed on the day that horrible scandal sheet is being printed for the last time.
When George was talking about heroin and that crap, I could sense an empathy in him even though he didn't do it. He just had that compassion that the human race needs oh so badly. All a user really is searching for with hard drugs is love and for awhile drugs help, but after awhile like he said, one becomes dependent on them. Fuck drugs, smoking cannabis is ok and a few beers but not much else.
About the money going to UNICEF- All the money for the concert and royalties from the record sales (Concert for Bangledesh) ended up being tied up in escrow for years as the American Government froze the funds in fear they wouldn't get their tax money from the concert. It left such a bad taste in Georges mouth that he decided never to do another benifit concert again. I believe the money was finally released sometimes in the late 80's early 90's. Ridiculous isn't it?
@5inthehole YES The concert was fantastic and he and others worked SO hard and gave so much of his own money as well to get the record out there. I don't think the money was tied up like that for that long, I have an article about that from waay back then I was a young teen, let me check it.
@bd9598 I know about the proceeds for the concert and record sales getting tided up in escrow for years. It had to do with revenue and the tax man (ironically for Harrison) getting his appropriate cut. It left such a sour taste in Harrison's mouth that he never did a charity event in that manner again. It is really to bad because the guy loved helping those in need. Even sadder were the poor people of Bangle-Desh.
I think the band "The Marmalade" he refers to having orgies with teenage kids may in fact be Led Zeppelin. They used that name at a gig in Germany because they couldn't be called Led Zeppelin or something. I could be wrong, but given Zeppelin's prowess as pirates, i wouldn't doubt it.
Why do they have DICKS interviewing these legends? When George was discouraging the use of drugs that Dick cut him off and then after the commercial he kills that moment by saying how his music caused thousands of kids to go into drug problems...this is what he meant about how lame american television is, he wasn't just referring to the commercials
I had a dream about George where he was sitting in my attic. I invited him to a nicer part of the house and he said "I'm dead now I can hang out wherever I wish."
He also said he was mostly in India since he died when I asked him what he was doing now.
have noticed when george is nervous he licks his lips alot. even in the early years.i love to watch a vid of him and seeing him do that LOL.shows he's just human with normal fears and thoughts. Rest in Peace George
@EvilGaoQui George was a huge Python fan, in fact he supplied the money for Life of Brian, is credited as Executive producer, and has a cameo appearance in the film. He's the one in the crowd scene that shouts 'I'm not!' when Brian says 'we're all individuals!'.
The reason he gave for giving them the cash was 'I want to see it'. Eric Idle says that's the most anyone's ever paid for a cinema ticket.
@1spati, perhaps theyre starving for a reason. they got no talent. and its time to move on and get a job so they will starve no more. and in case you werent aware, The Beatles were consistent in their dominance of music. and John and Paul may have been the driving force George and Ringos contributions gave them the final piece of the puzzle.
