The film also studies the character of a criminal and shows how his fears and regrets were no different than most other men. It humanizes the demonized enemy. Robert realizes how ordinary his hero is and he also realizes after killing him that he's no different.
I'm going to geuss that jesse knew what he was doing wasn't right and he knew he was doing wrong but he continued doing it to gain respect and other motives.
I was almost vomitting while listening to this song because of the way it touched my deep thoughts and made me think of death, beautiful song however.
Poor Charley he didn`t have to take things so seriously. We all do things we are not proud of. I wish I could have told him and showed him it was okay.
Can't say that I have. There was always something else I wanted to do. Or my predicaments changed or I saw my hardships from a different slant; you know all what can happen. It never seemed respectable.
I'll tell you one thing that's certain; you won't fight dying once you've peeked over to the other side; you'll no more want to go back to your body than you'd want to spoon up your own puke.
In the future this'll be one of those movies everyone is shocked isn't considered a classic, one where the cast looks as impressive as Ocean's 13 in hindsight, like Glengary Glen Ross or something. Where when it came out the names that might not have been as notable as Jack Lemmon, or Al Pacino; were Alan Arkin, and Kevin Spacey (Oscars anyone?). Who wasn't perfectly cast in this movie?
Charlie Ford faked his death in 1884 with the help of his friends, family and especially his brothers Elias and Wilbur and lived into the mid 1900's. There is no historical evidence that he ever suffered from consumption or was addicted to morphine.
The music for this movie is astonishingly moving. IMHO the music far out-weighs the actual movie, and thats not to say I thought the movie was rubbish.
@CTrace You're right, of course. But, man, it's clear he had no clue what he was getting himself into--he was living in a world of his own creation, until suddenly he realized he's in 'way over his head . . .
Bob and Charlie made alot of people happy, so happens Jesse had friends in the news industry, Jesse James was a ruthless murderer. He liked to kill meek train clerks, shoot half wits in the back and beat children.
Good movie good score and everything. but this song was/is released, though it may be called a "Song for Charlie" but it is also one of the score's for the ending credits.
Poor Charlie--he's the only nice (and half-way normal) man in the whole film. It's so sad when he's lying there in the bed, crying because he believes Jesse James is going to kill him the next day. I'm sure that that's one of the reasons Bob Ford kills Jesse--he's protecting his brother. Rockwell is perfect in this role. I love how the "star power" (Pitt & Affleck) does its job, but that there's also a perfect ensemble for the material--just like in "The Godfather". My favorite film.
i recently watched a show on history that points to the fact that Robert ford didn't kill Jesse James but that Jesse staged his own death so ppl would stop coming after him. it was really cool and the amount of Evidence the show gave convinced me.
I hated this movie when i first saw it, but it was cause i really didn't pay attention to it, altough i liked the soundtrack. then i saw it on tv and loved it and i just bought the film
@RagingBull91 i hate movies in the theater, especially long ones. I love watching this movie at home with my pause button lol this is my favorite movie.
ive been in the real jesse james house in st jo missouri about 6 times now. my grandma lives 4 blocks away from his house, his house used to sit on top of a hill but they moved it because of some underground pipes or somethin like that. his house is a hell of a lot smaller than they made it look in the movie. theres a hole in the wall when bob shot jesse and the original picture frame, its really cool. it makes me want to go back now after ive seen the movie, but i live all the way in cali :(
to answer Cacophob's question, this is Charley. Robert Ford's brother and Jesse's Friend. not only was he my favorite character in the show, but i believe he had the saddest story. afterall he couldn't help what his brother had done (notice the name of the song) it would only be fitting to see pictures of Charley :)
sorry, smarty pants, but this song is untitled. the person that uploaded this video gave it a name.and in a way charley was responsible also for assassination, because he too was pulling his gun. He grew to hate robert because of his bragging.
Clearly Charley pulled his gun out but never, never intended on pulling the trigger! Come on did you see his face he turned away, not only that but he tried to tell bob to call it off, maybe cuz he was scared or whatever but that shows Charley knew HE truly did not want Jessie dead.
no, you're totally missing the point. charley knew that killing jesse was nessesary. bob gloating about the assassination is what drove charley to kill himself, cause he and jesse were friends. you need to rewatch the film.
all of America feared and hated him and wanted his reign of terror to end, but after his death, charley and bob became the most hated men in America for what they did,
you do the people a service and bring down the most famous outlaw in American History and in doing so you become the most hated man in the world,
i just don't understand that at all =(
rest in peace Charley and Robert Ford and Jesse James
@thomasbaron06 It wasn't that people hated jesse james. He was looked at as somewhat of a robin hood character during that time. If the public wanted him dead, they easily could have ratted him out, or rounded up a posse and caught him. But although some despised him because of his lawlessness, the common man, the poor people, respected him. It was the aristocrats and wealthier people that wanted him gone. He was no hero, but he never once tried to be such. The Fords killed an icon
@BlinkBoyBrad It's obvious that Dick Liddle and Jim Cummins were happy to rat Jesse out and collect the reward money. The only reason they don't is because Jesse smells out the plot, and murders Ed Miller, who they got mixed up in it. As for "the common man", everyone is scared witless of Jesse, who's clearly slipping even deeper into psychosis. The point of the film is how bogus all that "icon" crap is--Bob Ford's tragedy is that he's bought into it and throws his life away in the process.
thats not what happened, when the gun is pointed DOWN and to his right for that second when he takes it out, watch his eyes, he's checking his gun, then theres the fact that when Bob and Charlie were talking the night before when Charlie was crying, Charlie was convinced that Jesse was going to kill them both, which explains Charlies behavior at the breakfast table before Jesse even read the paper. I seriously doubt he'd even CONCIEVE to kill his own brother over someone whos aiming to kill him
@ebuz218 go fuck yourself dick wad. I do not even see a comment made on this song recently, and and by the way glad Jesse James was shot in the back of the head, I guess karma sucks now doesn't it?
@MrOeyoenne Bob shot a man that wanted to be shot at that moment. Jesse felt betrayed. Bob and Charley were afraid they would be Jesse's next victim and there was no workable suitation after that news article where Dick confessed.

Jesse asks Charley if he ever considered it...he said no...always viewed his problems from a different slant. Charley had a hard time with the death of Jesse...I guess he could not view it from another slant. I felt bad for Charley.

no,
if you watch it carefully as he pulls his gun he aims it for Bob,
Charley was jesse's best friend and he didn't want Jesse dead,
but he also wanted it to end somehow,
just not in the way that it did
he just couldn't bring himself to pull the trigger and kill his little brother,
it was either kill his little brother or let his best friend die... at least that's what i think it showed
