what about the 1981 mustang Dean Thompson/Jack Roush car? one championship and one 2nd place only out by 3 points to Rickie Smith. almost 2 for 2 in a row !!!
i met ronnie and buddy before the 1970 gatornationals, ronnie gave that 10 yr. old kid his jardine header's jacket. i rode into the race with tom hoover " the founding father of the ramchargers, a/fx and so much more. then he was driving the white bear dodge f/c they rented a bay at our gulf station {I-75 & s.r. 26 in gainesville fla!!
He and Dick Landy were staying at the motel next to us! They were out with the lawn chairs and what crowd gathered! What storys! Dummy me, why I didin't get some pics, great gentlmen!!!!!
@streetrace442 Not too sure of that, but I do remember them running a Horizon in the late 80's at Atco, NJ. Kind of a joke compared to their A, B and E-body hay-days, but still a class act.
The '67 notchback Barracuda (S&M replica) at 4:25 is owned by Rich & Craig Pfohl from Dubuque Iowa. The picture was taken at the 1997 MOPAR NAT'S in Indianapolis Indiana.
i really liked this video i am a mopar finatic and at 37 i really hope to win the lottery or somehow find a way to buy a work of art that is a 60's barracuda they are poetry in motion. i do not know much about mr sox but he sure knew his cars and i would have liked to have met him.weird thing is i grew up in kinston a few miles from the dragstrip and him being from greensboro ill bet he may have raced there pretty cool and thanks for the video DRW
@3arntzen Its a mercury. Or in this instance training wheels, like on your bicycle. Further proof that the fastest cars come from mother mopar. No? Then explain why all them top fuel and funny cars that say ford and chevy on them have dodge engines? Sweet Jesus that always makes em cry.
I loved the Sox & Martin cars. They were the reason I bought a 1970 Duster. Heavily modified 340 c.i. that beat many many cars. I always wanted to do a Red, White & Blue paint job. Never could when I was young and poor. The best were the A/FX class cars. Over the top for the time.
@middsteve I think The Grump beat them numerous times. Just think what that rivalry did for not only drag racing as a whole....but for Camaro And Mopar Sales in the showrooms of the day. I was there, I surely remember.
Thank you for taking the time to make this vid, it was wonderful.

There is no doubt Ronnie Sox was and still is a legend of all time. I still have a collection of old magazines with Sox and Martin I've kept for years. May he R.I.P.
Ronnie Sox, my all time favorite Pro Stock driver. met Diane at MoPars at the strip in Las Vegas awhile back -awesome lady! wish I could have met Mr. 4 speed himself.

He was a very great driver. I mean no disrespect to Mr. Sox, but I do not believe that anyone can shift faster than a manual automatic transmission. I've been there.
they came to glover motors in asheville and showed the cars off. got an autographed picture. it was around 1970?? maybe before. saw ronnie run many times at bristol. great cars in pro stock back then!! peace to all and happy new year.
Why the heck did I have to throw away all my SuperStock magazines of those years? I had a few years worth. I'm glad you guys are uploading all those old memories. I sure liked altered wheelbase AF/X vehicles.
In 1967 at the Kinston Drag Strip a friend and me were in the pit area and Ronnie Sox was getting into his Barracuda. He asked us if we wanted a ride. We said yeah and jumped in. This was a small track and the owner (Shade Aldridge) would bring in match races. Anyway, he pulled up to the line and we jumped out to a startled crowd (and PA announcer).
I'll always remember Ronnie Sox for giving a couple of kids a great thrill.
@gdail NOW THAT....is one hell of a memory. Just think, Ronnie knew he was going to give a couple of kids the absolute thrill of their lives. I lived across the street from Buddy Martin in Burlington, NC and we got to see Buddy and Ronnie and the cars after the weekend races. They both were very generous with stickers. My fondest memory of Ronnie was when he drove me home from Shamrock Golf Course one day. Man could he shift on the back roads. RIP Ronnie!
The last shot was some incredible driving! Wrecks at the 330' line and still wins! I can't imagine how intimidating it must have been to race against him. RIP Ronnie, wonder if they allow drag racing upstairs? They must!

Great video!! I worked at a drag strip during the 70's and 80's and got to see the Sox & Martin team quite a bit. Quick question...Can someone explain to me when and why they started painting their headlights blue? I always remember that was sooo cool. DS.
Ahhhhhh the good old days. I remember them starting with Chevy. GM got cheap, after racing the Comet Mopar stepped up --------- and the rest is history. I would see them in the pits on the w/e very competive but nice guys.
I am 33 years old and I feel very lucky to have met Ronnie at the Mopar Nats in the late 80's. He was capaigning the 68 Cuda and I will never forget the sound of that Hemi being powershifted into second with the fronts in the air! What an impression that makes on a teenager! If it wouldnt have been for the greats like Ronnie Sox, Bill Golden and Dick Landy, I wouldnt have the appreciation for the sport that I have today. Mr Four-speed, I will never forget you or the influence you gave me!
I'd love to see today kids try wrestling one of those old lanky shifters of the era. Or getting out after a streetrace with a hammer & getting under the car to straighten out the bent rods. I sure did!
